It's the Eternal Anglo don't let France annex Rhineland after WW1 and then tell it's ok when Germans start building bunkers there a few years before WW2 so Belgium pussy out and refuses to extend the Maginot Line on their border with Germany to stay neutral like it worked so good for them two decades ealier then France find German plans to invade through Ardennes on Kraut pilot who crashed in their lines but dismiss it as a trap so they send their whole army into Belgium while German tanks slip behind so the Anglo decide to run back to their country while French army takes humongous loses trying to slow the Germans until the French government decide to surrender.

Belgium was an ally of France and Britain. You can't just build a wall between you and your ally.

Moreover Belgium was supposed to extand the line on their border with Germany. They reverted back to neutrality after Germany reoccupied the Rhineland and Britain refused to do anything about it while France wasn't quite willing to go to war either.

>>
>>34641801
France should have fortified the Seine river so they'd have room to maneuver and surround the german with their superior tanks.

There's no reason to defend the border so heavily.
>>
>>34641823
It's not similar to the schlieffen plan at all. The Schlieffen plan relied on an enormous superiority in numbers and "weight" of the attacking force which would be impossible for the french to stop.

Don't think that France didn't expect an attack through Belgium; they did. However, they did not expect such a large number of well-equipped divisions to roll through Belgium at speed, and arrive with several army groups at full formation at that speed. What Schlieffen sought in his planning was forcing France into an early and decisive battle at a place where they wouldn't have as large of an advantage as they would've around their prepared locations, thus ending Frances' war effort early.

This plan requires years and years of planning and logistical preparations and very experienced officers.

The Manstein plan (ie. ww2 plans) instead relies on local concentrations of armor in decisive position, and using their mobility to outmanouvre the enemy to an unsustainable engagement. It has the benefit of not requiring the same logistical apparatus or large force of the schlieffen plan (both of which germany lacked) but had the drawback of being very decisive both in case of a german win, and a german loss. Had its units not been successful in their manouvres, Germanys war effort wouldve been ended.

Really, with how short the Battle of France could have been with the effect use of French armor, losing the industry of Northern France wouldn't have been a big deal.

We just look at WW2 as an industrial war now because it lasted so long. Germany could have been destroyed easily in France.

Because Belgium was an ally, and you don't wall off allies.
Belgium HAD border fortifications that linked up with the Maginot line, they just decided to appease Hitler instead of defend their country.

Considering the germans expected to be able to just walk through Belgium unopposed, the belgians mightve given the germans more trouble than the bongs in the battle for France.

Nah, no one was expecting the war to be over in a month. Everyone was expecting it to go on for years and Germany had the material backing of the Soviet Union at this point.

Not at all. Germany didn't have anywhere near the resources for a prolonged conflict, especially if they had to fight the french on their terms, they would be ground down quickly.

The invasion of Poland actually took its toll on Germany, even though you might not think so. Remember that the versailles treaty meant that the numbers of the Wehrmach was still pretty low, and Germany lost 1000 armoured vehicles, up to 1300 aircraft as well as some 400 artillery pieces and 13000 motor vehicles, crucial to a war effort. While some could be salvaged and repaired, that took time which Hitler did not believe Germany had.

Exactly. The thing people forget is that the Maginot Line actually worked; the whole point was to shift any German offensive through Belgium.

They just didn't think they could drive their tanks through the Ardennes so quickly.
