I took the PTR-91 out for the first time today to break it in. First 180 rounds or so of mixed M80 NATO spec went just fine, but the last 30 rounds of Hornady Steel Match gave me issues. If I only loaded a single round, they would fuck up my magazines by making the rear end of the follower somehow jump up out of the mag, and I had two failure to feeds towards the end. I gave it a good cleaning and I'm just gonna chalk those up to a mix of break-in teething issues, hot loads, and an overheated/dirty gun (the first round of steel match sent off so much smoke from the lacquer getting fully burned off I thought I had an OOB strike). I don't usually buy steel ammo anyway, so the issue hopefully won't repeat.

Also set my range lane on fire, but that technically wasn't my fault.

...and he said the AR because of the mud tests. The autism of that really threw me for a loop. The huge aspect their mud tests fail to address, and Bob Sled is correct when he emphasizes this: speed of bringing the rifle back up. Every rifle will jam eventually, but when you eventually do have a stoppage or otherwise disgusting field conditions, you simply cannot beat the speed of an AK field strip. I asked in one of the recent threads about ordering the SA93 on GB, my local FFL is being a dipshit and not giving the seller their information so he can send the rifle. The payment has already gone through and all he's waiting on is their FFL info. What do? I asked them to send it to him or to give it to me so I could send it to him but they refused, saying that their information is already on gunbroker and he can find it there. I had no luck finding it and obviously he didn't either if hes requesting that they send it to him. This is really starting to piss me off.

I know most of you probably own both, but if it came down to choosing between a 74 variant and an AR, which would you pick and why? I'm on the fence at the moment

I have one and am trying to install a Molot OEM half choke, it also acts as a 5.5" barrel extension. But I can only thread it on part of the way before getting a lot of resistance because the muzzle has more threading than the choke. Are you supposed to just force it on anyway? I don't want to fuck up the threading, but I don't think my threads are supposed to be exposed like that.

I guess my chokes just have the regular amount of threads and match up perfectly.
I'd like to think that if you had less threads on the choke than that gun, the barrel/choke surfaces should be flush with eacother and good to go despite some threads showing. Grab a flashlight and look through the barrel from both sides to make sure it looks good visually.
But that seems really weird that you can't screw it on all the way, so I wouldn't trust it without being 1000% sure.

Right now? AR. The 74 market is in deep shit as a result of Arsenal turning the SLR-104 tap on and off randomly, and all Russian AK-74s being banned from import by sanctions. At the moment, there are no new production AK-74s available for purchase; everything you can get will either be second-hand or built from a parts kit.

On top of that, mags will run you at minimum $25 or so for a quality one (Russian surplus plums being the cheapest), and 5.45's continued existence as a commercial caliber is entirely at the whim of the US Treasury Department, as there is currently no commercial 5.45 load that is not entirely reliant on Russian munitions factories. Even Hornady's Black and V-Max 5.45 is made with lacquered cases from Barnaul. AK-74s are currently one sanction away from near-obsolescence in America at worst and 50 cpr ammo at best.

Meanwhile, AR ammo is 30 cpr or less and a high-quality AR can be had for well under $1K, including optics and magazines.

I love the -74 platform. They are the coolest AKs in existence to me, and if it weren't for a chance find on a dirt cheap Maadi, it would still be my only AK, as I had originally intended. The fact that you have to ask at all means you probably are not ready to deal with the bullshit associated with having an AK-74 as a primary rifle in the current market. You don't buy an AK-74 because it's the best or easiest to maintain or economical (these days anyway), you buy one because you specifically want an AK-74. If that was the case, you wouldn't need to ask what you did, so I honestly think you'll be better served by an AR.

I've had to run the 1mm part of a thread repair tool on my vepr 556 and 308 before it'd take any brakes other than what came with the gun. I think they may take some very slight damage during conversion while they remove the pin or whatever. It's pretty easy to try it if you are willing to spend a few bucks to get one.

Damaged threads don't seem to be the problem, it's just that there is only half the length of threading inside the choke tube as compared to the muzzle threading. I can tell that it will eventually sit flush if I keep twisting, in the process cutting out some more threading inside the choke. But I'm not sure if this will damage the muzzle threads

Yeah, but that's only one grip point. If you can't get it unscrewed, there's no good 2nd point on the gun itself to crank on for help. You'll probably be stuck trying to hold the gun between your knees and hope you can hold it tight enough to crank on the choke and get it off.
Take it very easy, go slightly further each time, then make sure you can unscrew it again. Go slightly further again, etc etc.

Yeah, the choke should be ever so slightly more open than the barrel itself so there's a good transition that doesn't try to blow the choke off on each shot. Narrower would be a very bad thing. You can see in my pic >>34646310 that the choke is slightly more open on mine too.
