You could be very stealthy with a bow

I would think for certain covert operations yes
>>
Crossbows have some limited use among special forces (snow leopard commandos in China, for instance) due to their power and silence. Also they had some historical use by tribes in the vietnamese border areas (google the Montaignard crossbow) as a last-ditch defence against the VC.

Montaignard crossbows have only three pieces and can be made ridiculously powerful depending on your strength, they're a 10/10 /k/ommando summer project.

This is the gayest shit. Literally any piece of metal exceeding the thickness of aluminum foil can stop arrows shooting at that angle and range (the archers are in fact out of range, and the 64s would have rekt them from a mile away).

it's clearly inspired by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_High_Crusade where some human crusaders hijacked a spaceship and destroyed a space empire

>The patrol boats swooped low, hungrily. Here was prey they might get. Their thin beams were intended for short ranges. On the first pass, two archers died. Then Red John yelled an order.
>Suddenly the sky was full of arrows. A cloth-yard shaft with a six-foot yew bow behind it will go through an armored man and the horse beneath him. These little boats made matters worse by flying directly into the gray goose flock. Not one of them escaped. Riddled, their pilots quilled as hedgehogs, they crashed. The archers roared and ran to join the fray ahead.

>>
>>34642179

>>
>>34640867
Sure. Archery develops strength, coordination and endurance. It's a good, solid hobby for a solider to develop, and a fun field day activity to encourage exercise for soldiers on base.

The fucking bow should stay home, but the archer can be effective. Armed with a rifle.

This is correct. In specific settings such as in a jungle or forest, bows are still a somewhat viable weapon albeit for guerrilla tactics.

The Viet Mihn as well as the Viet cong both used bows against The French Foreign Legion and the US forces in Vietnam.

Usually perched in trees, people that had actually hunted for large portions of their lives with bows, would fire arrows covered in feces and poisons at enemy troops.

If you are on patrol in a jungle and a couple of guys get hit by these arrows, it is obviously damaging to moral and somewhat effective to combat a larger and better armed force.

Anon, no one is questioning how it mechanically works. Everyone is saying without a chamber and barrel for the explosion to be concentrated and projectile to have a 'run' to actually make it lethal; that is pretty much just a small un-focused explosion.

The same idea of a firecracker being completely harmless until you grip it tightly in your hand. Ammunition only really works when its propellant is condensed and controlled in a barrel.

That shit is a meme.
>>
I expressed serious doubt over an individual who turned up to Croatia in 1991 with a Barnett Crossbow that he had concealed in his suitcase, which was full of other questionable items. He told me, during his interview, that he could use it to "take out" Serbian sentries.

Apparently the use, attempted or otherwise, of crossbows went on throughout the war. I doubt they achieved much.

> Churchill gave the signal to attack by cutting down the enemy Feldwebel (staff sergeant) with a barbed arrow, becoming the only British soldier known to have felled an enemy with a longbow in the war.[10]
>According to his son, Malcolm, "he and his section were in a tower and, as the Germans approached, he said, 'I will shoot that first German with an arrow,' and that's exactly what he did."[11] After fighting at Dunkirk, he volunteered for the Commandos.[12]

>maybe using a bow(or Xbow) to kill somebody?

Totally possible. They can be made very strong these days and surprisingly quiet. A good crossbow would definitely be usable as a sentry removal tool. The thing is they already have dedicated weapons that are very quite for the same purpose and it doesn't really come up much in the first place anyways.

So, maybe if you're poor.
>>
>>34646441
How do you like those Polaris limbs? What draw weight are they?
>>
In insurgent warfare, maybe. I could see crossbows especially (similar to the montagnard crossbows in Vietnam) capable of being used well by irregular forces. Bows and crossbows, while needing a lot more skill to operate, can at least be made by not-so-rare resources, depending on the location. Same with slings.

Don't think to do any considerable damage with any primitive weapon in a modern war scenario, but it could be a useful terror weapon.

Any other circumstance? No, never, for no professional application. No recon unit is willing to spend weeks or months training operatives on how to use an outdated and finicky weapon when they could just be given a gun.

Battlefield? Fuck no.

Missions that fall within an extremely narrow scope, in that the use of firearms would be detrimental, including suppressed ones? I mean, yeah.

From what I understand (Through friends that have completed the pipeline(s), and others that work with them and heard stories) US Army Special Forces, and US Navy SEALs do train with compound bows, not for use as an exclusive weapon in the field, but for "another weapon to master". My friend who is currently active in the 7th SFG said that while they did train with it, he/his unit has never actually used it. While our other friend in the 5th SFG states that he has personally taken it on deployments twice, both to "Not the Middle East".
