Which is better for HD?
>>
#4 all the way
>>

Follow-up: Which is better for general purpose self-defense?
>>
>>34639463
00 wins for general purpose. If gives you extra range and penetration against light cover (concealment). Inside the home #4 takes it. I would prefer #4 at any range inside 20 yards.
>>
>>34639906
What choke would you use?

I'd go with #4 inside a home or apartment.
Outside I'd go with #1 or #00 with a few slugs on hand just in case of longer range encounters.
>>
>>34639937
None at close range.
>>
>>34639448
00. I don't fuck around with #4 shot
>>
>>34639448

i always like to answer /k/s questions with the wrong answer because i know most of you are faggot millennials undeserving of knowledge
>>
00
I don't like #4 because it doesn't always meet FBI standards at various ranges. It's probably good enough for home defense range but I'd rather just use the 00 buck. #1 is the smallest lead shot I would use and feel comfortable with.
>>
>00
>#4

Fucking plebians, #1 gives you the recommended pen (#4 won't) but also ups the shot count over 00
>>
>>34641686
but will #4 [stop] a target?
>>

Wax slugs.
>>
>>34641628
>>34641686

The correct answer. Don't remember where I found it, but some police department did a thorough test and concluded #1 was the smallest you could go while still retaining adequate penetration
>>
>>34641915
>jams every round
>>
>>34639448
OP,
>>34641686
is correct. Best studies show 1 buck is best for maximum number of pellets with adequate penetration.

Now I'll earn the ire of K by saying for home defense it doesn't matter. If your distance is measured in feet rather than yards it's academic.
>>
>>34639448
Firing either of these in your home results in permanent hearing loss and instant disorientation. Use a fucking pistol or get a suppressor for a rifle you idiots
>>

you don't have earpro, bro?

A pistol will cause just as much tinnitus as a legal-length shotgun.

If I get invaded by cubed Jello monsters I'll let you all know how it went. Either is fine for humans. The #4 is still "buckshot" designed to kill animals and is still .24 caliber in a 3" 12 gauge shell. 00 will be foolproof but your odds of ventilating your exterior walls and neighbors goes down with #4, but hardly any at all with a #1.

Unfortunately, the science behind it all applies even if you're too stupid to understand it.

#4 buck and #4 shot are two different beasts anons. I know which tests you're referring to and #2 shot works well at very close ranges but don't use steel.

#1, preferably copper plated.

At normal household ranges, #4 copper plated.

#1.

Protip famalam, BG tests make rounds look like they perform better than they do IRL. Bones a bitch like that, ever wonder why the wolberg gelatin relevancy study specifically only used shots that didn't hit bone?

Shotguns are particularly effected by this because of their relatively low mass and low energy projectiles. Shot that penetrates minimally in BG is very likely to not penetrate at all past the ribs/sternum. Ones that penetrate moderately may very well run into serious issues as well.

This

Yes, the FBI would spent millions of dollars to advance terminal ballistics after getting BTFO with a .223 rifle is completely wrong because of a retarded poster on a Chilean Tarantula Forum.

My vepr 12 at 25 yards has like a 4ft spread.
I just got a choke for it
>>
>>34651508
What kind of house you got where 25 yards is a reasonable encounter range?
>>
>>34651514
Not a poorfag one.

Main point is, I would approximate that at roughly 12.5 yards it would have a 2ft spread, which is a reasonable distance in a house.
>>
>>34641628
#4 will knock down a steel popper.

It'll put a hurtin on Jamal.

Now if you want to completely destroy Jamal, then 00 all the way.

Perfect spread to correct miss with wrong point of aim.

#4 buckshot, not #4 shot

Fuck all of you saying to use #4. It doesn't reach 12 inches penetration, you fags just have retarded fudd logic that "it's a shotgun, it'll kill anything that moves in ONE shot!"

Also, get a suppressor for your HD shotgun! Hearing is important.
>>

You only see #2 and #3 buckshot in 20 gauge loads, or in some type of specialty 12 gauge load (like buck and ball).
>>
>>34649948
What is sectional density, you overly dense motherfucker?
>>
>>34656234
I'm waiting on a SBS stamp. Would putting a can in it and using it for home defense be retarded?
I guess it would kinda defeat the very purpose of a SBS. I'm not sure about the electronic ear pro solution some have mentioned here. Is that just a meme or do you guys seriously throw on you earpro when you hear a strange noise in the middle of the night?
>>
>>34656333
Also, wtf I didn't know this type of thing existed. How would this perform ya think?

Low brass shells and "tactical" shotgun loads have been a thing for a bit now. I guess it was only a matter of time before they start advertising subsonic.

Would there be any point to keeping two slugs in a side saddle, along with 00 buckshot for a gun like the Remington 870 Tac14 or Mossberg Shockwave?

My thoughts are slugs are mainly used for longer distances, and with a shotgun as short as the ones mentioned above, you arent really able to aim...
>>
>>34658834
Get some real sights on it if you want to go distance shooting, otherwise you're fighting an uphill battle. Having slugs as an option is always nice but you're talking about a gun with no stock and only a bead, it's only as useful as you are a good shooter in suboptimal conditions.

>>34658873
Right, and I really doubt there will ever be a situation I would take a longer shot with such a short gun like this (besides the shooting range). I just didnt know if there are any advantages to having slugs for short range situations...
>>
>>34658959
Kinda redundant. A slug will shred anyone it hits and even shatter bone against soft armor but ultimately you're gonna do a lot of overpenetrating and you don't have any spread to make up for poor shot placement. A lot of police these days are armed with shotguns that use only slugs since they need something that can hit at range where they could likely get into a shootout. I'll presume you're not a cop so this is moot. I would just stick with buckshot as far as home defense ranges go.
>>
>>34651817
SDI works better for distance, but most consumer TVs don't have it.
>>
>>34658834
put one of those ring lazers on it that shows the spread at distance
>>
