Soup Gear Queers, quick question: I want to upgrade my plates from AR500 level 3 to something that will protect me from AR15s and other high velocity rounds, but I can't decide between ceramic or steel plates. From what I understand, the ceramic can protect against AP and high velocity, but they can break if dropped, and they somehow only last 5 years?
Anybody with some real experience want to weigh in? Weight is not an issue, I am used to carrying the ar500 plates already.

you want level IV ceramic plates they don't even make level IV steel plates. They would be like 10+ lbs
the dropping thing and expiration date is a meme. it's only there for liability reasons.

>Anybody with some real experience want to weigh in?

fucking ignore me pham
>>
>>34639473
just buy the ceramics

even the "level 3+" steel plates are very sketchy and prone to failure

also you're not gonna break a ceramic plate by dropping it a couple times, there's a reason why they're issued
>>
>>34639473
Make sure any plates you buy are ceramic Level IV and on the NIJ approved body armor list.

Don't know if bait but:
-If you're worried about AP, get ceramic. Preferably multicurved to hug them tiddies nice and tight
-5 year limit is largely a liability thing. Them breaking is largely fudd myth, just dont drop them off a cliff.

3+ is not a real NIJ certification. Its a made up commercial industry term. AR500 was never meant to be body armor its been pushed into that roll and there is a lot of fuckery going on. AR500 dot cum has lied several times about their certifications and the manufacturing is so inconstant that they can't guarantee that their product will stop what it's supposed to every time. but they still fucking say it can anyway.

literally the only reason ar500 is so common is because it was so much cheaper then ceramic composite armor for so long. that isnt true anymore there are cheap level IV plates with actual certifications.

My only advice is /arg/ and /gq/ will bully the living shit out of you if you buy steel.

Personally I feel the weight but I am a godamn grown ass man and the difference of 2lbs is insignificant to me. At the time my purchase was good but current price put ceramic at equal foots for less weight but more bulk.

Either way, fuck it it will stop a bullet. Getting hit multiple times or by specifically armor defeating bullets is out of the conversation. No standing military force equips armor defeating rounds standard and getting shoot sucks 20 nigger dicks. Your rigs are gonna bruise no matter what. Be happy you are alive.

I'm not saying steel is shit, or that steel is useless, or that you have to buy what I bought. In fact for the past several days I've been linking Anon ceramics that I WISH I HAD bought, as opposed to the ones I actually bought, because they are a better deal, are better plates, and are higher quality.

It just takes a modicum of self awareness to realize you mad a mistake, and then to help other avoid the same mistake by telling them what you learned.

Ceramics are $260 for a pair right now shipped, high quality HESCOs. They offer a lot more protection, are lighter, and are obviously much more of the real deal. Steel armor is a purely civilian market. Think about it.
>>
>>34641942
12.5 is good if you want to move up a FSB to the midlength position.
There isn't much of an appreciable difference other than opening up your handguard length or buying a Kino from BCM so you can have a freefloat and a FSB.

>>34641922
No, it's just people that know about it and have a strong position because there is an obvious answer if you take an unbiased perspective at it and aren't just waiting to hear what you want to hear. Holy run on sentence batman.

It is not about weight so much as it is about capability to stop one or several projectiles, consistent manufacturing that actually produces products capable of what they're claiming to, and not having bullet shrapnel/fragments slicing your femoral artery, jugular, or eyes. Ceramics do a proper job of capturing the projectile, and steel doesn't; despite what truck bed lining you want to use.

While I respect your insight and opinion I have to play doubles advocate. There are literally THOUSANDS of people praising steel over ceramic on online reviews.

Yes they may be wrong and completely retarded fudds but THOUSANDS? At some point you have to knowledge the point. 4chan's armor threads have taken a strong ceramic stance but what makes you more qualified then the hundreds upon hundreds of other people that claim contrary?

Personally the rew videos I've seen have shown AR550 stopping common rounds over multiple impacts and the undercoating containing the "spalding". Could a ceramic do the same thing? Perhaps buts it is a matter of numbers and those do not support the Ceramic is ALWAYS superior slant you've taken.
>>
I'm a bit confused over 5.56 penetrating steel. I've seen lots of videos where there is no penetration at all yet some seem to punch right through? Is it a factor of distance and barrel length? Are you safe with steel as long as you're not being shot with a 20in barrel?

>>34642062
>Doubles advocate
>Spalding
This is why you get bullied.
Ceramic most certainly can deal with multiple impacts while containing spall because it doesn't produce any significant spall by fucking design. Furthermore it can deal with greater threats, while weighing less across the board. Yes the thousands of fudds saying steel is better than ceramic are simply wrong. They're justifying their purchases post purchase the same way you have been for the past week. The truck bed liner comes off after a few hits, especially with the higher power stuff. Patriot Armor Defense anti spall coating seems to be better than most, but at the end of the day you're still ending up with a heavier plate that offers less protection, and that is about the same cost as the $260 HESCOs I keep bringing up.

>>34642079
It is because the steel they are testing varies wildly, and the conditions for penetration also vary. A 10.5" AR firing M193 isn't going to penetrate a good batch of AR500's most recent III+ steel. Make it a bad batch of steel, could pen. Shoot it out of a 24" barrel? Will definitely penetrate the level III steel and possibly the III+ steel because chances are they fucked up the hardening process. Maybe it doesn't penetrate, but that means spall. If that spall gets through (which it often does, just watch the videos), you're going to be bleeding from the neck. Do you even shoot? Have you not seen the 6 inch deep troughs in the hard pack dirt that the spall coming off of steel targets create?

>>34642014

5.56 spec ammo will penetrate most ar500 out of a 20 inch barrel at like 5 yards. Anything further/shorter and it won't. So don't freak out when you hear ar500 sucks because 5.56 can go through it.

im making a chest rig and i got to thinking

why do some chest rigs have shit in front of where the mags are? like haley strategic ones (above in pic related)
not a lot of stuff in there but surely enough to make things clumsier and i just dont see the benefit anyway

ive only used chestrigs and vests with dedicated mag pouches but with mags being relatively thin, i think having them in single pouches on the front pals of some larger pouches would be the best practice so you dont need as wide a rig

overthinking is fun

Steel is decent if you're a cheapass, a poorfag, or don't expect to come up against people packing the latest and greatest milspec ammo

Ceramic is god tier if you can afford a spare set, have access to xray machines (j/k), would like to spare your knees the fatigue of a few pounds over your lifetime, and are actually in the military or a LEO that deals with cartels

Beyond that it's all skub

Is there a plate carrier out there that can carry level IV plates in a concealable way? Like literally its only purpose is to carry the plates snug on you, so that you could wear it underneath a bdu or parka. I think that concept would be pretty cool for a minuteman style load out. Wear LBE shit when hittin and runnin. Dump the shit when you want to be a normie civilian under occupation, but you still have your armor retained and hidden.

This is tricky since they dont flex at all and will always make you look like you have a perfectly flat and square chest. If you just want something slick that you can zip a jacket over and just look a little goofy then consider a LV-MBAV, Slickster or similar slick carrier (ex: >>34647055)

That's actually exactly the same setup I'm using. I really do love the lightness and freedom of it.

It's not about going after GI gear for me, its about sticking with gear that works and only phasing things out after really deciding they don't work. I have adjusted my gear in the last few years, but at a much slower rate than I did when I was first feeling out how to be tacticool. I think the nitpicky details of the setup are less important than your personal familiarity and muscle memory with the setup. If you are constantly chasing after the newest Gucci gear, you'll always have a kind of disconnect from the layout you're using.

>>
>>34649411
First of all, you snide cunt, there are more uses for guns than body armor. I was actually asking why, I wasn't trying to be an asshole. I think body armor actually is cool, but it's pretty unlikely it will ever get used for its intended purpose in the civilian world.
>>
>>34649334
I was a soldier so long that I can't feel well and truly at peace if I don't have a kit ready close by. I don't ever forsee a specific reason to use it, but it makes me sleep better. For a few hundred bucks it's worth it. I post here to vent out all my spergy gunfighter autism which keeps me from doing it in public, so I can stay nice and adjusted instead of being one of those vets who publically garnishes himself in moto gear.

>Snide cunt
Lol sorry I deserved that.
I bought my first set of armor after the BLM terrorist murdered those 5 cops in Dallas. He had some armor on AFAIK, and I was worried about armor getting banned. Its intended purpose is to increase your survivability in a gunfight, as combined with the medical resources and back support neccessary to treat non critical wound. Did you ever see any of the footage from Bundy Ranch? How about the Oregon Standoff? Those would be reasonable places/times to have had armor on. Who knows if Lavoy had some 3A under his jacket he might still be alive.

My snide comment actually had a rhetorical point behind it. We own firearms for a particular set of reasons past them being cool. Those same reasons apply in analogy to armor. Just defensive instead.

Lead level anon: Like any good hunter can tell you, lead is mostly introduced into the body via inhalation. The majority of lead in your food is passed through. Don't get me wrong, you shouldnt eat or drink lead, but the inhalation is the major danger. You can shoot a deer, and eat the meat where the bullet came to rest, no problem, but I wouldn't huff the fumes coming out of the gun barrel. You should practice outdoors.

Seconds saves lives!

Theres actually a bunch of stuff you could improve on. For starters, the medical supplies are lacking, the holster could be better regardless of how functional it is now. The knife looks to be tucked away quite a bit, its probably hard to grab the handle with your full hand when under stress. Your pouches, while maybe functional, since this is an autistic general, ill criticize that there is no consistency. Some are buckles, some are velcro, some are buttons. Its just bad for muscle memory. It would be smart to have one streamlined way of doing things. The two drag pouches on the PC will likely interfere with magazine access.

Depending on whats in the pouches id give it these scores

Functionality - 6/10
Aesthetic - 3/10

Fits very well, gotta have stiff plates inside tho. Handgun kevlar and stiffeners are not enough to make it fit perfectly. Maybe with less weight, but i have 6 loaded AK mags on the front. With the level 4 ceramics i got today its ready, all i need to do is get a pals backpack for it.

Belt:

>Two single stack pistol mag pouch
>Double stack rifle Taco

Back:
>Swiss Gear backpack from Costco with hydration bladder

New to this thread, is anyone here particularly knowledgeable regarding night vision goggles and NV/infrared gunsights?

After playing the shit out of ARMA, I came to the realization that being able to see at night without giving away your own position with a flashlight would be invaluable in a SHTF situation, and thermals would make spotting people a piece of cake.

Is there anything remotely decent on the civilian market for this kind of gear?

The inly decent things are going to be a set of Gen 3 nods, or any sort of FLIR(Forward Looking InfraRed) device. Anything under gen 3 for night vision (colloquially referred to as NODs) essentially requires the use of an IR illuminator in order to see. To anybody else using NODs, you are a walkig bloom of light when using these devices. Gen 3 night vision is readilly available and very good quality, especially from L3 and ITT. tnvc.com is a good place to start when talking about anything thermal or NOD related. Generally, if TNVC doesn't carry it, it's not worth it.
>>
>>34662699
I got my stuff because I thought it was cool and that it might not be the worst idea to take a few training courses. Now that I've taken those courses I mainly use ny gear to train and keep up the skills I learned. It's also their on the off chance that the world does in face decide to shit itself and I need to do some actual fighting. I only have a chest rig and belt. No armor. I don't see the point of armor unless I'm actively going to get shot at instead of getting it for some fantasy scenarios that may or may not actually happen.
>>
>>34639473
Not to be that guy who interjects his milfagness into everything, but the ceramic plates can survive a lot more than a drop. A dude was throwing all of our IOTV's out the back of an FMTV and they were all fine. It's just a liability thing. Trust me, go ceramic. There's a reason most 1st world militaries use it, or their soldiers go out and buy it themselves.

I have free reign for gear in my work as long as it fulfills, is capable of meeting or doesn't interfere with SOP's. Mainly being plate carriers capable of carrying the issued soft and hard armors.

Speaking of which, anyone have experience with the Haley DCR 7.62 variant? I'm looking for a universal chest rig that can fit kydex inserts (Kywi) and fit both 5.56 and 7.62 mags since I'm using multiple rifles of different round sizes.

>>34664402

By the numbers? Yeah probably. But in reality not really. The benefit to this is its good on the wrist. Where the etrex is handheld. 250 for the 601
599 for the 701

Id probably recommend the 401, unless your very gq about this kinda shit. You can find the 401 for like 100-150, and it does a great great job. If you have the extra dosh the 601 has significantly better battery life (apparently) and some cool guy features. But the 401 is what I recommend to people on a budget looking for something that just works.

Right now im torn between the 401 and the etrex 20x. If i could find a price for the 601 in Canada id maybe add it to the list. I dont care about geocaching and shit.
I want a fast accurate consumer GPS. Support for more than just Navstar (Glonass, Galileo etc) would be even better.

Light infantry nasty girl here. I've been using PLCE webbing for the last few years and loving it. But I recently got moved to a new section and I'm being issued an M9. I have this exact kit that's sew on, so I'm not sure how to make it work. I couldn't find any examples of how the British military makes it work, so I was hoping someone more familiar with the system could help me out.

Does anyone have a link to that one suspender set on ebay? It was $20 and came with the LBH, belt, pouches, and canteens. I can't find it at all and I'm seriously searching for it. I lost enough weight to where I can fit into it comfortably.

Are you asking for a chest rig that's just got a bunch of handgun mag pouches all across the front?

Thank you, sir. I may get it for myself as a gift for losing the weight. $32 is a little bit more than I wanted to spend, but I mean it is a gift.
