I currently attend a Senior Military College and half the guys I know have confederate flags in their rooms.
(I've posed for pictures with a couple during large uniformed group photos)
People are allowed to have interests and political leanings outside of their chosen career path.

It does, it's "wrong", and on its face the first natural reaction would be to be upset with it. But you're not looking at it through the lens of who they are and how they've spent the last four years of their lives.

The uniform isn't something they put on just for work, it's something worn almost every waking moment of every day for four entire years of hazing, alcoholism, beatings, etc...
They're not thinking "wow we're going to make a statement", they're thinking "wow this will be a cool and funny picture to show my parents", the fact that they were wearing a uniform probably never fully crossed their minds.

Some cadets at Texas A&M, another Senior Military College, had a picture taken of them wearing dress uniforms and doing a mock-ISIS photoshoot faux-beheading a guy with a ceremonial sword.

Once you understand where they're coming from it makes the situation less abhorrent/morally upsetting; even if it's technically against the rules.

Lol, no. The fact that future officers are this foolish and shortsighted fills me with pity towards both their subordinates, equals and superiors. At least there isn't active conscription in the US, so anyone suffering from their leadership is there voluntarily.

No, anon. A bunch of West Pointers taking a politically charged photo as a group is not ok. The A&M photo sounds like an intentional joke (albeit a poor one). This photo is abhorrent through and through, and the fact that they've lived the last 4 years of their lives in such a strict environment doesn't make it any more acceptable, quite the opposite. There are rules and regulations we all need to abide by, no excuses.

It's about behaving professionally and acting with reserve. Especially in uniform, you just don't do that shit.

Regardless of what your opinion is, which it is just your opinion, they are representing everyone in the military and when they choose to make a political statement they are drawing a lot of attention to themselves.

Should they have been charged? obviously not.
Should they have gotten checked the fuck out and had triple pt for making a scene? you bet your ass.

For every young woman in that photo that you're begging to be excused for their behavior there is another student who would not take a picture like that, and 10 more applicants per single student that would gladly take their spot in school and who wouldn't even think of taking a photo like that.

Am I saying they need to be expelled? No. Am I saying there is nothing worthwhile about these future leaders? No. That's a conversation for a different time. I'm I saying they need an ass smoking and a wake up call about what it means to be an officer. Enlist in the Navy if you want to make symbolic joke pictures. I expect more from Officers and so does everyone else.

Cadets from Academies and Senior Military Colleges have always been ballsy edge-lords.
VMI has a secret group of students that beat the shit out of each other/staple each other's skin to "prepare for SERE".
Citadel has a ton of weird backroom shit.
A&M was literally pic related until the early 2000s.

The picture means nothing, it's just kids fucking around that need to get smoked for letting the picture leak instead of keeping it privately for themselves; if it's getting an actual physical reaction out of you then you're a special snowflake.
