It's extremely light weight and pleasant to use. Balances like a trap gun. The muzzle break is creates fuck huge pressure waves and is very loud. People don't stand close.

It's really fragile though. Biggest gripe with the design. The upper hand guard is cracked from mild use

i hear that, 2 years ago there were 2 turk mauser carbines that looked just like that one for $225/ea at the LGS.

I was at the LGS because I was putting one of my Turk long mausers up for consignment.

it was really really hard not to buy one of the carbines --- but i managed to resist.

Have you tried doing South American Mausers to mix it up? if thats not your thing, go Enfield.

SA Mausers aren't really my thing, even though I appreciate the craftsmanship. I do have an Enfield, an Ishapore 2A1.

I just have had this weird frenzied feeling for the last year in buying milsurp, that somehow every one I'm looking to buy will either be my last or is the last of its kind...so I feel like my collection of milsurp rifles (7 rifles and 1 pistol) needs to be perfectly balanced and have the perfect distribution of different bolt mechanism types.

I've been collecting milsurp over ten years, but only in the last year really ramped up the buying. Truly a disease.

Syrian ones weren't refurbished but I don't think there has been a war yet that would take a Mas 49 down for the count. They are rugged.

>>
>>34637379
Cleaning cosmo isn't the issue, it's when people strip the stock in an attempt to clean it that bothers us.

Go to harbor freight or Lowe's or whatever and get a heat gun, then take the stock off and sweat the cosmoline out. It's a time consuming process but it's not terribly hard to do.
>>
>>34637448
Would a blow dryer work?
>>
>>34637348
no, just bring a rag with you to the range, after a few trips youll get most of it. thats also why the wood is darker, because its got grease in it. so it might lighten up a bit in color when you take that out. alternitavely if you dont want to wait x amount of shooting trips you can take the wood stock and just let it sit out in the sun or a hot place like your car trunk. put it in a black trash bag for maximum meltage
>>
/nogunz/ here, I want a Gewehr 98 for my first one. I also don't want Turkshit, preferably German or Czech. If I want to get one as a shooter, what condition should I be looking for? If y'all like bayonets, this may interest you. Pic related came from a family friend who was in the British army in WWI. Anyway, the story told is he captured this bayonet, then had the company blacksmith be at a curved edge on it and redid the grips so he could effectively have machete for when they visited the german trenches with this in one hand and his webley in the other.

> Gewehr 98

are we talking WW1 full length infantry variant or the more common ww2 K98?

> If I want to get one as a shooter, what condition should I be looking for?

check the rifling, sights, and bolt. Yes you generally don't want to go for the perfect all-matching gewehr 98 because they are extremely pricey and generally you don't shoot those as they instantly devalue when you start shooting them.
>>
>>34637981
Nope, at least not that I can see. There is blood on the handle though. Not blood stains, but like literal dried red blood on the wood
>>
>check m1903A3 bolt
>oh shit there's rust in the screw grooves for dismantling the bolt
>have no idea how to properly clean this shit out

I used some wd40 and steel wool but holy shit the grooves are too small for most of the wool so a lot of rust is still in them. what tools would help fix this shit?

and should I be panicking?

Also tried to peddle me "the first No. 1 MkIII he'd ever seen in all his years of selling" and it was a similarly beat-to-shit Ishapore MkIII* that he wanted $1300 for.

He also had a fucken sweetass Comission 1888 rifle, I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it.

Yes it does.
There are C&R guns that are still under the NFA and GCA. Sec. IV
There is also the list that are exempt from NFA but still under GCA. Sec. III
Then there is the list of C&R guns that have been removed from both the NFA and GCA. Sec. IIIA
>>
>>34640043

Which does not disprove my statement. Being a C&R gun does not automatically remove it from the NFA, C&R does not override NFA. I didn't say that you couldn't have guns removed from the NFA, but the anon I was responding to was (possibly) hoping that once FALs went C&R they would be exempted from the NFA, which is incorrect.

This, I got a surprisingly fast email from the ATF saying that antique black powder shotguns are not exempt from NFA if they are cartridge firing (pinfire exempted) and require stamps though they did bring a weird point about welding it shut and permanently rendering it muzzle loading being legal if it is antique but I never got a followup on non antiques.

Instantly filtered.

Reserves are fucking retarded. Just put the gun at no reserve and start the price at what you want (or a bit below). I have no interest in playing "guess the reserve price".
>>
>>34640675
sadly many sellers have yet to realize this
>>
>>34640707

I just don't even understand why reserves exist in the first place. Call me stupid, but it just makes no sense at all to me.

>get option to start the bidding at X price if you want
>instead start bidding at $0.01 with a hidden reserve price no one can figure out
>this is even more confusing when there's no "buy it now" price either

What do they expect people to do? Keep slapping random amounts of money on until someone hits the magical reserve price?
>>
>>34640707

Low start + reserve gets people emotionally invested in the auction. For instance I would have only bid $100, but now, to spite the other anon, I might go as high as $120.

I haven't seen any studies done, but I'd bet reserves are a net positive for a decent gun.

>>34640811
Its ok. This gun has a "buy it now" price of $4000, and a reserve of probably somewhere in the $4000 range, meaning it won't sell until a bid hits the reserve price.

So there were no bids, and anon jokingly placed a bid at $100, knowing nothing would come of it, and I outbid him by $5, because I know nothing will come of it.

Because you want to generate multiple bidders. Starting it at the price you want to sell is a good way of just selling it at that price with only one bidder at best. Starting it below market value gives an incentive for people to bid and they may even over pay to get it.

Sub $300 is awful low, but you could feasibly get an M48, a Turkish mauser, most of the Spanish mausers are trashed but if you can find one that's not go for it, and possibly some South American variants for around $250-$325

Turkish mausers can still be found for that. Yugo mausers maybe if you're willing to compromise a little on condition. I got my Chiang Kai-Shek rifle for $300, but that was a little lucky. Vz 24s maybe, there's one local to me for under $200, but it's in rough shape.

This was on GB and the guy had the reserve set pretty high. Me and another guy both bid on it. I "won" but was still under the reserve by $100-200 or so. Guy relisted the item and lowered the reserve to what my old high bid was. I rebid that amount and won the auction cause no else came to play.

I've bought many rifles UNDER market value, because of retards like you. You'll can ignore the reserve auctions and I just put a reasonable bid in. I've won so many guns because no one else even tried to put a bid in.

And a no reserve penny auction is generally bad if you're a buyer as there is always two or three retards that get caught up into it and overpay.

Hey friendos, I know I had asked this on the previous thread but it had closed before I could see any replies. Anyways, I need assistance in identifying this bayonet. Ive heard that it seems to bare characteristics to both a 1907 Enfield or Early Turkish Mauser bayo. Any ideas?please and thank you!

Johnny Turk will make a working rifle/bayonet combo out of ANYTHING. They would retrofit lots of these bayonets (or at least re-use the blades) to later fit their M1 Garands, G1 FALs and even G3s.

Well I can tell you that my Tokyo Arsenal T38 rifle, SN 212662 was made in 1909 according to Arisuka's reference books, so yours is probably first or second year of production.
>>
>>34645244
That's a pretty early one. Carbine or rifle? Tokyo Arsenal of course. Earliest one I've seen desu.

And yeah, you're right that it was given to a school.
>>
>>34646112
>>34646195
It's a rifle, full length. Pretty cool that it's an early production, really unfortunate that it's in such rough shape though. Nothing I've done has been able to get the deep rust out of the metal.
>>
Got that Gew 88/05 for $225, bluing is pristine, barrel is nice and shiny, pictures to come soon, probably next thread.
>>
>>34646231
Patience. Keep the metal soaked in penetrating oil for a few days. Then oil up a bronze bore brush and tackle the pitted parts.

Question about cleaning. My vetterli has what looks like pitting, but instead of being into the metal, it is raised. It almost looks like lead but isn't in streaks. It comes off eventually. But I've gone through two brass brushes and a whole bag of patches and a whole bottle of jb bore shine. Any thoughts on how to heavily clean it better.

>mfw I can't get a specific section of the bore to get into focus on any camera
>>
>>34633780
Any Garand owners here? I just got my garand gear gas plug. When installing it should I tighten it hand tight, or use a tool to go even tighter?
>>
>>34647616
If it's raised and not going away with cleaning then it's probably a defect in the barrel, chill out and don't over clean that barrel
>>
