Lmao at the broader /pol/osphere getting into a giant tizzy about like one black guy being in like one shot of this movie and ferociously throwing fuel on that outrage to generate all those sweet sweet outrage clicks for Breitbart articles written by the same people who probably started the outrage in the first place by twitter shitposting.

The movie's pretty good tho, quality plane porn (mostly practical, not CGI if I am not mistaken, or good enough that I can't tell the difference), the rest of it is very unconventional for a war movie, it's more like a survival film disaster movie kind of affair than a typical war movie.

This is exactly why I didn't see it. Brits and Russians alike glorify the shit out of everything they did during WW2, including humiliating defeats.

Isolationism is best ism.

>>
>>34639391
No.

While it was the opinion of the time of the British that the army was allowed to escape in order to show peace towards fellow Aryans, and to better secure a favorable peace, that was shown to be false.

This guy Manstein submitted a plan to quickly encircle the enemy on the advice of Guderian. He submitted it to his boss, von Rundstedt, not mentioning Guderian, who was seen as too much of a maverick. von Rundstedt modified it, and submitted it to OKH. OKH modified it, and sent it down.

Then the actual execution was more along the lines of what Guderian had actually proposed. Tearing his hair out, Hitler thought his generals too big for their britches, and ordered a general halt. He would let the infantry catch up to his tanks, because he couldn't stand the thought of losing them.

And so, one of the greatest Allied generals was Adolph Hitler, someone who never advanced past corporal, but who thought himself smarter than his generals.
>>
Tom Hardy getting the kill at the end was bs. He was gliding prior and even turning would put his plane much lower in the air than that luftwaffe one.
>>
>>34640558
well a kill with a gliding plane is possible only vs a retard who either agrees with a head-on or maybe needlessly loses energy in a sharp turn or some silly acrobatic maneuver, otherwise a gliding plane is a helpless sitting duck
>>
>>34639897
>that was shown to be false
I am going to need to see Hitler's diary entry where he explains how he suddenly changed his mind and suddenly hated the Brits and no longer longed for an alliance with them as he discussed in Mein Kampf and made clear repeatedly during the lead up to the war.
>>
>>34640622
His false hope doesn't show any of the above to be false.
>>
>>34640622
If Hitler was so concerned about the casualties of the British and wanted to minimize them to make peace, why did he let the Luftwaffe go to town on them?
He only stopped because Rundstedt was rightly concerned about British and French attacks on his flanks with 50% of tanks needing some form of repair and refit, and the need for foot infantry to take on hundreds of thousands of soldiers.
>>
>>34640708
Plus inflicting another 30,000 casualties, and capturing another 300,000 men would have done more to negotiate peace from a position of strength.

I fear that it is summer.

Today we were walking around the Oshkosh airshow, and saw a spitfire taxi right by us. It reminded me that Dunkirk was out in theaters, so we ubered to the movies and watched it this evening.

As a aviation and ww2 buff, I enjoyed it.
I've got a little wehraboo in me and my favorite plane of all time is the ju-87, but even though the movie hardly showed the German side, it was still very good.

No romance, real spitfires (not cgi), real ships, real boats, real beaches (not cgi rendered backgrounds).

Not really a spoiler.
My favorite scene was watching the spitfire pilot put his gear down with the aux hand pump. It's cool watching Hollywood get it right.

I think it's amazing though that when finally see Germans, it's part of the most emotional scene (for me at least) of the entire movie. Seeing Farrier go through all of that over the course of the hour then beautifully glide landing on the beach, finally removing his mask, and burning up the spitfire then getting taken prisoner by the two Wehrmacht soldiers was just a punch in the gut for me

>being granted mercy by the Germans
Someone wasn't paying attention in history class.

The reason Germany didn't fuck shit up at Dunkirk was because of a halt order by General von Rundstedt, along with bad weather preventing the Luftwaffles from working at full potential.

The Germans stumbled, and payed the price for it dearly, while Hitler tried to play it off as being kind in order to save face.

>>34633365
>bane crashes his plane
>his fire rises
>getting caught was part of his plan

Seriously though, did you see the movie? It was obvious that the airplane set on fire was a prop, the damn thing didn't even have a fake engine, the propeller was held up by a big pole.
>>
I thought it was excellent, bit more of a survival thriller than a war movie but the visuals/sounds (the stuka runs were so loud the old fucks were complaining)/suspense really made it for me
>>
>>34642774
also the high rpm, short bursts mg fire from the spitfires tickled me good
>>
>>34642774
>the stuka runs were so loud
Pretty much all of the gunfire was loud as fuck, I dunno if it was just because of the cinema I went to, but when the scavenging brits started taking fire at the start I almost covered my ears.

It was definitely something to appreciate, though - not a lot of war movies do justice to just how fucking loud a gunshot is, and I think Nolan must've cranked it up as high as the studio would allow.

>>34640938
He'd been gliding for quite a while, easily made it past the spot where the beached Dutch boat was, so I figured he was going to end up captured. Some of the scenes were really moving though, the flotilla of little ships being spotted by the allies had me tearing up a bit.

They only die after killing a stupid amount of Germans in about as Hollywood a way as possible.

Fury was trash.
Hacksaw Ridge was trash
Red Tails was Trash
USS Indianapolis was written by children with some of the worst effects i've ever seen.

I genuinely can't think of a good US film about WW2 since Saving Private Ryan - which is excellent as no one will deny.

Meanwhile, the UK has a nice collection of WW2 films, dunkirk, Imitation Game (not combat related but very good and set in WW2), The Railway Man, The boy in Striped Pyjamas.

And lets not forget the classics like the Great Escape, Bridge over the river kwai, a bridge too far, Empire of the rising sun (British story American director) and the battle of Britain.

>>
>>34631386
The British army had black soldiers in it. American training films for US troops going to britain explicitly make a big point of this and how race isn't a huge deal in the UK like it is in the US.
>>
>>34630011
It was an enjoyable film that showed the various microcosms of the event.

I thought it was interesting to have the land sea and air stories taking place at different time scales.

The lack of CGI and use of real aircraft and visual effects was a breath of fresh air for a war film.

It managed to capture a lot of subtle historical points very well, the French rear guard, the British army consigned to defeat.

The soldiers realising they weren't cowards for escaping was quite moving, especially since the main reason for remembering Dunkirk is that there's no shame in living to fight another day, especially considering the UK went on to beat Germany and Italy on land sea and air before the US entered the war.
>>
Was great.

The only jarring part of the movie was everything to do with that group getting the landed dingy out to sea.

The more you think about it, the more it makes no god damn sense.

The American army had black soldiers in it. The American training film which I think you are referring to is this one:

He's talking about how civilians in the UK would associate or speak to coloured US soldiers in a way which probably wouldn't happen in the US - i.e. in the US a nigra wouldn't have been invited over for tea.

Was crashing the pane part of the plan?

Was lucky enough to have a 70mm film showing at the nearest theater to me so I did that instead. IMAX may have been better for sweeping shots but the shaky film quality reminded me of old war movies, honestly made the experience for me. >>34633441
Why is /tv/ so trash? Went there for the first time last week looking for movie recommendations, every other thread was game of thrones and the only movies people were talking about were absolute dogshit. I figured it would be more like /mu/ where most people just regurgitate ignorance but there are a few good discussions and a decent sticky, but I learned absolutely nothing from the hour I spent there.

Why did the bongs just sit on the beach and wait for death instead of turning around and fighting?

Seems they got what they deserved. Learn2swim, bongs.
