Go out and shoot some steel. A steel gong.

Use plywood as a frame to hold everything together.

Shoot it about 20 times and go check out the spall in the 2x4s you used. It is fucking everywhere.

I used to think buying steel plates would be worth it. Then I started shooting steel all the time and realized the spall is insane and if you were wearing it, it'd absolutely destroy your face, neck, arms, etc.

Just buy ceramics.

You bought some surplus ceramics marked up 500% back in the early 00s and you're buttmad AR500 plates are cheaper, lighter, more effective and last much longer.

Even the cheapest ceramics are lighter than steel and cost only a tad more. Get a 100% PE plate and it's even lighter. Why would you ever get steel?

Spall protective coating actually works, just not for too many rounds. At the point the spall coating fails, your ceramic armor would be dust and you'd have several bullets in you.

Yes. You also have a choice - likely no wounds to very superficial wounds from spall or a rifle round to chest.
