Be very wary of fakes as the vast majority I've seen are 'Khyber Pass' fakes. Familiarize yourself with the markings and production dates. For example, I've sen some dated 1915 (long after production ceased) with Queen Victoria's cypher (Victoria died in 1901). Not all will be this obvious but the most commonly faked version is the 'artillery carbine' which is the model in your photo.

Here is a photo of the roll mark on my Martini-Enfield. The ME MkI will have a Martini-Henry roll mark on the right side of the receiver (usually rather faint) and a Martini-Enfield roll mark on the left as these were built from existing MH MkIII actions. The ME MkII's were built using new actions.

That's the issue - they are unsafe to shoot as they are not properly heat treated and use unknown grades of steel. Fire at your own risk.

They can be unsafe to shoot, it all depends on the maker/forger. Some are totally worthless, but there is a minority of gunsmiths who make functioning guns because their customers want to shoot something/one.

Our Afghan /k/amando should ask his family if they know someone who may be able to hook him up with something reputable.
