Last thread drove off a bridge edition.

/thg/ is a thread for discussion about tanks, tracked armor and other armored vehicles. Please keep things civil and cite sources.

The US Medium Tank M2 was an attempt to give Armored Branch something approximating a medium tank after decades of little funding post-WWI. Based on Light Tank M2 and using many of the same components the Medium M2 was accepted in 1939 and was armed with a 37mm gun in a rotating turret and eight .30cal 1919 machine guns, including two fixed guns fired by the driver. A notable feature of the M2 was the use of bullet deflectors installed on the rear fenders of the tank. The idea behind these was that the tank could fire its machineguns into a trench it was crossing by hitting the deflectors. These devices were not installed on any latter tanks. This number of machine guns was excessive for the five man crew.

In December 1940 an improved version of the M2, the M2A1 was accepted into service. The M2A1 featured a new turret with a hatch on the top rather than a door on the rear, an improved gun mount and splash deflectors on the hull front. Armor thickness for both the M2 and the M2A1 was 1.135 inches on the hull. A total of 18 M2 and 94 were accepted into service. Obsolete the moment it came of the production line service the Medium M2 never saw combat, being used exclusively for training purposes within the continental United States and being redesignated as a training machine.

Armored news as per the format:

- A single BMPT has been deployed to Syria, it is a combination of a BMPT hull and BMPT-72 turret.

- Turkey is seeking bidders for its Altay tank program, the estimated value of the program is more than $10 billion.

- France showed off a the VAB replacement in the form of the Griffon multirole troop carrier during its Bastille Day parade.

- India has selected its state-owned Ordnance Factory Board to upgrade 693 BMP-2 IFVs, the value of the contract is $375. Upgrades include

- improved fire control and fitting for improved power packs and more modern ATGMs.

Three or four gunners, a driver with his two fixed guns and the commander.

That new side armor is weird. If it actually works in disrupting the precursor charge without disrupting the main ERA then that is a pretty impressive achievement. Any information about what its made out of?
>>
>>34620235
>the two for the driver, the two facing us, the coax. where are the other MGs?

Two more are on the sponsons facing backwards. you can see one of them poking out in >>34619630 above the lettering on the rear side of the tank.

Wikipedia says 7 MGs, but they probably had a spare one stowed away or something in case the tank crew had to jump out to assist the infantry.

Weirdly the source I used for most of the OP post did not mention it had a coax, only the sponsons, the hull guns and the AA guns.

Can't say I have all that much feelings about it, but at the same time it's pretty hard to deny that it's one of the most ground-breaking tank designs ever, probably with nothing but the Tank Mk1 to beat it in that regard.
>>
>>34622077

Warthunder, yeah I know, has it model to what they know, shame the AAs aren't functional. Anyway, two fixed hull mounted so no adjustments possible, to semi turreted on the left and right sides on the front AND back, plus the co-axial. So that's 7 M1919s going bang bang bang, not including AA mounts but then someone would have to be outside. Imagine if they had these against the Japs.

Fun fact, Early Stuarts models were kinda similar to the mass MG mounts before they were removed in later models.

IIRC, it was concluded at one point (I think in the context of naval aviation) that virtual attrition caused by pilots being scared shitless by clouds of tracer fire was more significant than the destructive effect of AAA fire during the war.

Looks like a tiny storage bin. You can tell by the locking toggles. The one on the left is not closed but not opened, while the one on the right is pad locked closed.

>>34630493
The toggles are more likely access panels, which if you look are on the sides as well. A storage compartment would actually be a box shape and wouldn't require the cupolas to be raised and super thick hatches to be installed.

You could also not be lazy and look up the fact that Spain and Sweden have additional roof and upper glacis armor on their Leopard 2's.
>>
>>34630635
I'd say it's a place to stash the crew weapons. It's about the right size and that's what I'd do if I didn't want to use the back bustle bins. Also those are the exact toggles used on the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 bustle bins, I've never seen any access panel on any of the Leopards that wasn't affixed with a 19mm bolt.

I'm saying they are not access hatches because their is nothing below them other than the top of the turret, why have an access port to the armored turret top? The side hatches look like a great place to stash maps, notebooks, and other junk the CC and loader like to keep around.

The crew hatches are different than the German Leopards; They are vastly thicker which raises the effective top of the cupola. With that extra height it makes sense to convert the space in front of the raised cupola into storage bins.

The more I think about it the more I'm sure that's exactly what was done. They made a super thick crew hatch that raised everything up. They had extra space in front of the cupola so they made it into storage.
>>
>>34630804
You need to spend less time trying to rationalize your opinion and spend some time actually reading about the Spanish and Swedish versions of the Leopard 2.
>>
>>34630881
Feel free to offer up documentation explaining the panels.

My theory is sound; Thick hatches raised the cupola far above the turret top. The extra space was converted into handy storage bins.

General question:

In the event of some kind of all-out war between major nations that currently field modern MBTs, what's the situation going to be when it comes to replacing lost units?

Will they have to get old assembly lines up and running to churn out more of their respective tanks, or (like the F-22 for example) is a lot of the equipment and manufacturing stuff repurposed/dismantled after doing the production run?

The immediate solution for those countries that have done it, is reactivity on of mothballed units. For example, the US has a substantial number of M1s in dry storage and even more M60s (and a stupid amount of M113s, it's almost like they had far more divisions until relatively recently). So while new plants would be opening, the immediate solution is to pull old stocks and give units older equipment as necessary.
