The trick is evenly distributing the weight. Not too much on one side or the other. I balance out everything by going: Phone in left front pocket, spare mag IWB at 11:30, pistol at 1, keys and knife in front right pocket, wallet in back right pocket, and if i carry one my light in back left pocket. spreads the weight pretty evenly for me.

I unironically carry a G23 OWB. I like it a lot and I find the recoil really just feels perfect for me. It was one of the few guns I quickly got ahold of shooting rapid follow up shots.

That said I'm looking to retire it for a 9mm, or a 1911 of some sort for concealed carry.

1911 would be a big step backwards. A truely fine 1911 is definitely something to behold and can be as much functional art as it is tool but they have major drawbacks for EDC.
If you like your Glock frame size you can always convert that to 9MM. I would swap the slide and ejector housing as opposed to just a conversion barrel if I was going to carry it all the time, though.

Any future quality optics will fall into one of two footprints, the RMR cut or the Docter cut.
Many sights fit the Docter cut right now but I expect some more to fit RMR cuts as time goes on. People have lots of money in cut slides, not staying with a backwards compatible mounting footprint is a mistake and I would be surprised if this fact was lost on optic manufacturers.
Putting the rear sight in front of the optic is a literal bandaid for everyone who early adopted milled slides and foolishly thought they didn't need cowitnessed irons. There was no place left to put the rear sight after the fact, other than in front of the dot since most guys overtook the dovetail with their optic cut. That is the one reason this format exists at all. Any other reason such as "shielding the dot" is pure BS.
Having the rear sight in front of the dot is slower than having it in its proper place and looks like a hack job to those who know better. It's not like it's so bad you're going to die in the streets, but it is just sloppy and stupid.

You can see where I started to play with my G20 frame a little. That pic has the undercut and mag scallop.
Before work today I lowered/reduced the top finger rest and removed the bottom one. I also widened the mag scallop a chooch and sanded everything down other than the back strap.
I am deciding if I want to restipple it or do a silicone carbide. I bought stuff to do both so I might mix it up some. Maybe. This time I will do a sprinkle stipple like this test I did on muh AR10 grip.
