How many astronauts have seen combat?

I remember some infantry officers making it up to space.

How did they get to space from a combat arms position? I feel its a question worth asking.
>>
https://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/voss-ji.html

Beginning of career: Infantry Basic Course, Airborne and Ranger schools. Infantry Officer Advanced Course

End of career: oss served as a mission specialist on STS-44 in 1991 and STS-53 in 1992, was the payload commander on STS-69 in 1995, and again was a mission specialist on STS-101 in 2000. During 2001 he lived and worked aboard the International Space Station as a member of the Expedition-2 crew. A veteran of five space flights, Voss has logged 201 days in space, including four spacewalks totaling 22 hours and 35 minutes of EVA time. Jim’s last role with NASA was as the Deputy for Flight Operations in the Space Station Program Mission Integration and Operations Office.

How did he do it, lads?

By combat would you include aerial engagements?

John Glenn:

>In the last nine days of fighting in Korea Glenn downed three MIG’s in combat along the Yalu River

Every goddamn last one of them. You think them damn grey aliens aren't down here right now, probing everything in sight and taking our jobs because of their innate goodness? You better wake up, sunshine. America's astronaut program is the earth's first, last, and only line of defense against the extraterrestrial menace. They're up there right now, making holy war to keep complacent little shills like you safe and secure in the greatest country on God's goddamn green earth. So the next time you want to question their bravery, you better keep in mind that their sacrifice makes your life possible and show them some damn respect.

He was an officer. Going to Ranger school and Airborne school is normal, and required after you hit O-3 if you're infantry.

Ranger tab doesnt mean you're a Ranger. Ranger school is a leadership course. So he wasnt an operator, he was an officer who completed Ranger school.

And anyone in infantry can get sent to airborne school. It's only 3 weeks, so even legs end up getting to go sometimes.

>>
>>34616778
not a full astronaut yet, but goddamn, check this out:

Dr. Jonny Kim has been selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. He will report for duty in August 2017. The California native trained and operated as a Navy SEAL, completing more than 100 combat operations and earning a Silver Star and Bronze Star with Combat “V”. Afterward, he went on to complete a degree in Mathematics at the University of San Diego and a Doctorate of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
>>
There is a SEAL in the astronaut pipeline right now. He's a Roof Korean too from California.

He's was a surgical resident at Mass Gen. They need medical personnel on each mission. Preferably ones with balls of steel.
>>
All of the early Astronauts were test pilots and most of them flew in Korea. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, John Glenn, Wally Schirra (who served on the USS Alaska before going to flight school).

>Kim enlisted in the Navy as a Seaman recruit following graduation from Santa Monica High School in 2002. After completion of training at Naval Special Warfare, he was assigned as a Special Warfare Operator to SEAL Team THREE in San Diego, California. He served as a combat medic, sniper, navigator and point man on more than 100 combat operations spanning two deployments to the Middle East before accepting the Navy’s commissioning program in 2009. Kim was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) into the Medical Corps following graduation from the University of San Diego in 2012. At the time of his selection in June 2017, Kim was a resident physician in emergency medicine with Partners Healthcare at Massachusetts General Hospital.

>Military decorations include Silver Star Medal; Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V”; and various other service awards. Special Operations Medical Association 2006 Naval Special Warfare Medic of the Year; 2012 Tillman Scholar

>>34618594
Why do so many SOF enlisted end up commissioning when so many conventional enlisted don't? Just a more alpha personality?
>>
>>34616778
It's a happy coincidence. Mission commanders and pilots are qualified test pilots. There are three test pilot schools in the U.S., two of which are operated by the DOD. So it goes that the majority of test pilots are military pilots (usually with experience in fast jets).

>Higher ASVAB scores than average recruit
>better PT scores than average recruit
>more often join out of a duty to serve and maximize their potential, rather than a need for bennies or a stable career they can't find elsewhere

It's a natural progression. If you've already proved yourself as a badass but still want to serve (and make a lot more money) why wouldn't you?
>>
>>34618603
SOF enlisted are typically the only enlisted personnel that could even be considered intelligent so they are a great pool for successful OCS candidates.

Most don't go through OCS. It's kinda hard to earn your degree on your own time when living the SOF lifestyle. They get Academy or ROTC spots.

So do a lot of aviation maintainers and Intel guys. I'd be willing to bet they make up 75% of mustangs these days.

gettting into the astronaut program isnt that hard, if you are military, you usually have a higher chance of gettign it. Also going into a niche STEM field helps to up your chances for consideration. You have more competition as a civilian.

Maybe it's because I'm 0% azn but this attitude towards higher education in asian families puzzles me. It's almost as if there is some heavenly mandate upon birth that every single child is given where a future career outside of medicine or law is grounds for death by firing squad or some shit. It's total mystery as to why korean and Japanese kids are more than happy to high-five a bullet train rather than live with the same of being a fucking safety inspector.

Poo in loo/American by birth/British here

It's all about status. It started by wanting your kids to be better than you. But once you reach the stage where everyone and their mothers cousin is a nuclear physicist, or a successful doctor, it's really looked down upon to be anything else. I'm an AFROTC scholarship fag, and my mother who's white British is really fucking proud of me. In what world does a an enlisted have a Masters and isn't something silly like an E-6/7+
>>
>>34616778
If I recall correctly, the best way for an infantry officer to make it to space is to get to the mission where you are flying out of Washington DC in the helicopter. When it crashes you go to a cut-scene where you are an astronaut.

But then the EMP kills you so there is a downside.
>>
>>34627514

most branches will give you e2/e3 for having a degree,

it is possible to get a degree while in and still not go OCS, some people just like enlisted jobs more but dont have a civilian transferable skill, like >>34618594

at least the guy had medical quals before he got his degree, but there are not many civilian friendly jobs that you can use SEAL training for (unless fitness trainer)
>>
>>34627654
Yeah, but even if you go in with your degree, surely it takes a few years for things to calm down enough for you to focus on something like a masters? If you're a pilot in the USAF, you're advised to wait at least two years before even attempting the Masters.
>>
>>34627751

The coast guard has quite a few people with degrees joining too, you get automatic E-3 with a degree, but over a 6-8 year span, it is possible to slowly get a masters (if you start at 18, join at 22, you have a degree by 28-30) that means that you could reasonably have a masters in STEM which you could use to be astronaut technician
