What's the best elk hunting cartridge?
Shots up to 350 yards, lightweight rifle (under 8lbs scoped). I want something quickly and dispatch a bull at those ranges without hammering my shoulder from such a light rifle.
7mm-08 okay? Or should I just nut up and get something in 300WM? I've never fired either.

.300 Win-Mag seems to be more popular. I just use fuddy-ought-six personally.

Why is 30-06 so popular? I can't find reasons other than "it works" and "it's been used for 100 years". Surely there's something better by now.

>Any fudds here?
Yes, it is just popular because it's been around for a long time.

270 Winchester with a 150 grain bullet offers better sectional density than what you'll find in 30 caliber. Sectional density is what gives you that deep penetration you're looking for.

What about 6.5x55
>>34616096
140 grain 6.5 mm is a fine bullet.

Because for the better part of that hundred years guns and ammo were available as cheap milsurp and even after that dried up it was so embedded in the culture as to be the benchmark by which all others were judged.

Won't find many guns chambered in 6.5x55 in the US. Really just tikka, sako, and cz.
.270 win is good elk medicine

Man up.

You have it flipped. Heavy rifles are bitch tier.

Highly suggest a 300wm with break on it. It turns my 9lb gun recoil into about the equivalent of my 7lb 243. It's not an expensive job for a gunsmith if you want it on an older rifle that doesn't have a break on it already and turns a big gun into a fun shooter
Don't worry about the noise, you're wearing earpro at those ranges and it's mostly to the sides anyways.

7mm-08 would be fine.

There are many "better" options depending on what you want, but it's a great do all caliber. You've got energy on par with a 7mm Rem Mag, flat trajectory, a huge array of projectiles to choose from, and factory ammunition is everywhere. You can load it for everything from blacktails to brown bear.

SD's in the same ball park as a 180 grain .30 cal. The .30-06 & .300WM can also be loaded with 200+ grain bullets. I dressed and skinned a 6' black bear shot with a 180 grain ballistic silvertip out of a .30-06 last fall; the bullet traversed the chest cavity and exited through the far shoulder. Blew up the top of the humerus on it's way out. Considering that the silvertip isn't even a well built bullet...
