Is british surplus any good?
>>
Some of the best stuff you can get is Brit from what I've gathered.
>>
>>34614373
Don't buy a DPM Smock, MTP ones have far better pockets and imo are far more comfortable
>>
>>34614395
Do you recommend any websites? Want a comfy outer layer preferably somewhat water/wind proof.
>>
>>34614408
If you're in the UK then most surplus stores/amazon will have MTP smocks, outside of that I'm not sure, it's current issue kit so I can't see much of it getting abroad

but comfy/somewhat waterproof/windproof describes our smocks pretty well I'd say, done January exercises in Salisbury planes/Otterburn in the bollock shrivelling cold and the smocks do help a lot, There's absolutely no point wearing one with a chest rig however as it makes about 8 pockets inaccessible
>>
>>34614471
Not UK, but still in Europe, i'll check them out if they're not too expensive.

>Sewing a miniature patch of your country's flag onto a jacket
>Particularly one with velcro slots

Why the fuck do they (meaning just Britain and Germany I guess) do this? Pride of their GDP?

I guess a positive is it's kept me from buying meme flecktarn all this time.
>>
>>34614751
Cant you tear the seams?
>>
>>34614751
The newer MTP smocks only feature the flag on the velcro patches, not on the smock itself

the reason for it is historical, the colour/flag bearer would stand to the right of the line, so when you look to your right, you'll see the flag on the left arm of the man beside you.

That's the reason the Brits do it anyway, same reason we call it a Leftenant rather than Lieutenant, it means the same "In lieu of the line"/"Left of the line", so historically he would stand on the left

https://www.varusteleka.com/en/bestsearch/windproof%20smock?q=windproof%20smock

I recently bought their own improved version of windproof smock (Särmä windproof smock) and it is now my number 1 go jacket. It has all the improvements of latest (MPT) versions and some, plus one does not need to advertise one's autism by wearing camo at public places all the time.

Also for its price British North Ireland patrol pack is a comfy and durable rucksack for daily use.

I like the newer version of DPM. I wear a surplus UK Army jacket and pants for hunting and hikes and neither has failed me yet. On the other hand I had a whole set of the older webbing and it was heavy as fuck. If incredibly solid. But the jacket pockets are roomy and anyone wearing webbing in the forests of my country looks like a total idiot anyway. It's backpack or nothing.
>>
>>34615151
I have an Arktis one now in plain green for all my /out/ shit, excellent quality but it cost a lot. I do wish it had the under armpip zips but everything else is perfect. I wore my smock year round inna infantry, dumbasses didn't know about covering up from the sun and those things were perfect for it; you just unzip the armpips and open it half way down your chest with a t-shirt underneath. Actually cooler than a shirt and more practical in the field. And in the winter you zip everything up and you've got a hard wearing, relatively quick drying, fire-resistant shell layer with lots of pockets and a hood and vents. Those things are one of the best top layers of all time, jack of all trades.

Any civilian wearing webbing anywhere looks like a total idiot. A lot of faggots in the army even look like total idiots wearing webbing because they made it or bought it shit tier.

I left and sold mine to airshitters on ebay for almost as much as I payed for it, and by the end of my time that beltkit owned me nothing. I think part of the reason it sold for so much was that it looked the part; authentically worn. You can literally sell Camelbak Motherlodes for as much as you payed for them new provided you put a few years of use onto them so they appeal to the shitters. Guys were selling the old Talons for like £250 and shit on fleabay when they left.
>>
>>34616308

What is this Arktis garment you speak of? My experience with -30C is that anything with a zipper is a bad thing. But my experience is aging so maybe some new product type manages it?

Also sold some shitty contact gloves I'd never worn for like 120 quid, told the lad I'd been issued them on a joint exercise with 21 SAS by their CQMS and never wore them

Sold a brand new smock for over £2300 to A russian airsofter, same buyer spend another grand on the mk1 shirt and trousers

Same bloke used to collect biscuit browns and fruits on ebay for £20 a pair to airsofters. Makes me giggle.

I had all sorts of bids on my kit, I have all sorts of shit dating back to my Trusty Mk.VI and ECBA body armour from Banner, down to current issue, but i just can't seem to part with it.

Just a particular make. I've never been in weather that cold but this has large buttons as well as a main zip. It's not really designed for that climate but I don't see why it wouldn't function reasonably well there, I know the Nordic snow smocks are basically a big polycotton tunic because. Same thing with this except it has a zip, pockets and buttons.

This is a serious nostalgia, Half the time i spin a dit to the youngans in the platoon and they have no idea what i'm on about.
It fucking worries me that we have people born in 2017 in the army some times.

A couple didn't even know what a jetpack was and thought we flew around in them. One didn't even know what an assault vest was.

>One didn't even know what an assault vest was.
how in the fuck

>>
>>34623228
Na, its all Molle belts, or if you're unlucky its PLCE.

I had to train in 58' webbing (if you can call it that, it had two kirney pouches, the rest i had to bin as it faded white and it soaked up two tins of tiger black) , then i got issued a modified south african Assault vest type thing for banner, then i got given a molle chest rig just in time for Telic in 05.

He only found out what it was when he came over for a BBQ with the boys who found my man cave.

"Oh wow check out this retro ECBA, where do the plates go?"

Some of them were looking at a picture of me in front of a saxon with my mate with an L100 and me with an browning at basra, which surprisingly looked ally for 2005, Eugh whats that vehicle boss? Whats up with the Sharpe? what kind of glock is that?

worst thing is i'm only just 30, but to them i could have taken part in the battle of Omdurman.

It was a south african assault vest in IRR DPM.

It was a bona-fide one by an MOD contractor, unlike the cheap £20-£30 cadet replicas they churn out today.

It was deliberately missing one of the long side pouches and maybe a couple of others on one of the sides.

It weren't a bad little rig for wearing over your ECBA in NI. I'll have to dig it out for you.

The old two-tone ones are a better overall package for warmth (and make great 'enemy' wear on exercise in December). Anyone who makes the 'it has a rank slide flap so it's an outer layer' argument is a cunt and should be told so forcefully, preferrably with a shovel head.

Besides, anything brand new is immediately not ally.

here you go, furthest to the right.

Funnily enough my wife is Half rhodesian from her mother and half saffie from her father.

When i first met her parents no man had the official endorsed by father until i did, went out had a couple of pints and he talked about his time in the border war. Her mother doesn't talk about rhodesia at all though.

Not shown ECBA and molle chest rig, they couldn't find them.

Before we got the MK1 osprey we used to wear webbing over armour so theres that. The osprey platres in a shit state and i need to clean it to get the carbon out, but there's something inside me nagging that i shouldn't.

>>34623841
I'm somewhat reluctant to show my mancave in its entirety due to PERSEC issues, that and its kind of like my sanctum, i only let people in who i want to, my wife knows better than to come in.

I do admit its got some cool stuff in there though, one of the last flags to be lowered from hong kong, an indian lancers pole, japanese good luck flag. Not the guy you were asking, but probably the B110 combat smock. I ordered one from them in a custom pattern, I think they call it Comb Urban or something like that, they don't normally make the B110 with that pattern, but all I had to do was ask, and they said yes. It's a subtle combination of grey hexagons. It took a few months for me to get it once I ordered it, but it was worth the wait, it's very high quality. Cost me about $160 shipped to the US. Mate, it's Russia. When I was in Moscow I went to a knife store to stock up on some domestic Slav steel, bought a bunch of "collectors" knives. By law knives are considered weapons and are illegal to carry if they meet certain requirements including steel quality, otherwise they're considered tools/decorations and you can have them on you whenever you want with no valid reason needed. I walked out of that place carrying massive hunting knives in my pockets with a bunch of certificates from the shop confirming that they're not in fact weapons. That's how they work.

I've got a Serbian Genocide woolen blanket, it's actually a really great blanket and I'm a blanket connoisseur.

Mine is just plain green but I've used it /out/ twice now and it's been great both times. Surprisingly windproof for the regular unlined one, almost as good as actual windbreakers I own. I was on top of Bleaklow in gusts that pushed you around and it was keeping a great deal of it out, more than good enough for me anyway considering the other benefits it has over more single-purpose clothes.

I took the rank slide off. If I'm inna countryside I'll wear it day to day and it wouldn't look out of place, definitely not in town though.

Gotta admit, that parka looks bretty good.

Looks neat. How well padded is it?

One think I like about British field uniforms is that they have nice big buttons on everything. When you don't willingly remove your mittens even to piss if you can avoid it, that's a good thing.

Except that I would have absolutely hated them during my service. Spreading out camo nets over trucks is already hell, especially with just one pair of mittened hands. Those nets love buttons like they were free candy.

The PCS parkas have the buttons hidden under the flaps, anon
So long as you pick up one of the newer MTP ones instead of a DPM one you shouldn't have much issue with snagging

It's not insulated/padded at all, it's just a single layer of tightly woven poly/cotton ripstop. Basically it's a shell garment, but it's roomy enough to wear several layers under it if needed.

I am new to russian surplus. Is BARS a brand or just part of the name?

Also, how are SSO gorkas? Is that the official brand or just replicas?
