My dad and all my uncles were issued M-1 Garands , they called enbloc clips, just clips, and they called their grease gun magazines clips. The word "Fudd" derives from the cartoon character Elmer Fudd, the inept hunter and Bugs Bunny nemesis who's catchphrase was "Be vewy, vewy quiet. I'm hunting rabbits." It's been around since the 1980s in the gun community and was adopted to refer to those gun owners who supported banning "assault weapons", which was quite a common mentality back then. Many of the people who held this mentality were elderly hunters who would say things like "You don't need 30 rounds for Bambi". Most of them died off in the 90s or saw the light during the Clinton assault weapons ban and subsequent attacks on gun rights. It's not nearly as common a mentality now as it used to be, though some still do exist.

I grew up in a weird backwards family. The most recent generation is full of fudds (some hunt, but none believe that people should own anything but a good deer rifle), but their parents are full on gun rights activists. I don't really get bothered by people, especially older people, not knowing a ton about Assault Rifles and the difference between the Modern Sporting Rifle and military weapons.

After all, the MSR was initially sold in 1964 (Colt AR-15 Sporter) and it's patents were valid until 1977 or so and then gun control started ramping up in the later 80s and by 1994 we had the Assault Weapon Ban which didn't sunset until 2004.

The real popularity of using MSRs started in the 90s and was killed in the 90s and then allowed to start up again in 04.

So there are gaps in people's experience with them, and everything on TV just shows them to be unstoppable machine guns.

I don't rage at anyone, I just calmly explain the differences and they usually get it.

Some will argue that shots over longer ranges can be ethically hard to defend because even a slowly moving animal can make a bullet that would normally hit the vitals hit somewhere else and grievously wound the animal, not to mention spoil the meat. IMO I think a fair definition of a fudd is someone who enjoys guns, but does not fully embrace the second amendment, thinks it is primarily for hunting, and hunting guns are the most sophisticated ones people should be allowed to own, hence the Elmer Fudd reference.

They are pro gun control at least in terms of Assault Weapons, sometimes in terms of open/concealed carry. These are typically older people or politically Democrat but enjoy hunting, or both.

I get the feels that things have polarized so much that the people who have any positive feels about guns see the looming writing on the wall and just want as many guns in as many hands as possible so that taking them away becomes quite impossible in any practical sense.

In turn, people who don't have positive feels about guns have isolated themselves so much from them that they plain don't experience any guns unless they get mugged or see a policeman.
