how good are the cheap RIAs?
I like 1911s but don't want to spend over 700 on one
>>
>>34603689
They are garbage, get a Ruger at minimum.

>>34603661

>>
>>34603661
I am thinking about an Auto Ordnance, but I want to see the difference between the parkerized and black versions in person before I decide. Walnut grips of course. I plan to eventually have stainless and blued 1911s to go with the GI style.
>>
>>34603738
Ruger 1911s are the least properly fitted 1911 in existence.

They typically work, but most have very poor barrel fit and lockup, slides off center, and filled with nasty cast parts.

Big turn off for the two I had was the thumb safeties did not properly engage the sear, allowing movement of the sear with the safety engaged.

Sent one to ruger and was told it was within their specs. Nope. Would not fly with any reputable 1911 manufacturer.

I recommend Colt and Springfield based on experiences with both. I hear the ria is very good too.
>>
>>34603976
Hasn't colt QC gone to shit?
>>
>>34604073
No. As usual, you should look any gun over before you buy it, but I've bought 5 over the past two years and all have been awesome. Series 70 or 80, both great.

Only sold a few to fund a les Baer purchase.

If you can swing it, the rail guns are phenomenal. Superb fit and finish, accurate, soft shooting.

Honestly, if colt offered more guns with front strap checkering I would have more colts and less higher end guns.
>>
>>34604119
Do you think the colt lightweight commander is worth the ~$200 over the Ruger?

I'm pretty much just looking for a 1911 that will run and run, but longevity is also important to me
>>
>>34603976
they can't be worse than TISAS

>>34604073
shockingly their QC is fine. The Sig 1911's on the other hand could be a concern.
>>
>>34604149
Yes I do.

I would stick with a 1911 in 45 though, they tend to be less finicky as far as extractor adjustment and magazines. This is where the Colt is better. Parts are much more likely to need less fitting on a Colt than anything else out there.

If you shoot allot you WILL have to learn to adjust or possibly fit an extractor.

I'm partial to steel frame full size guns as well. Aluminum frames guns can get some feed ramp damage from certain mags. Typically it's cosmetic, but I still don't like it.
>>
>>34604212
The reason I'm after a 9 and concerned about the $200 difference is I'm a mondo poorfag in college right now, so I won't have a big shooting budget for a few years.

.45 being more pricey than 9mm, I figure I can get more training in with the latter. Also the extra round or two per magazine inspires confidence.

Does colt have a steel framed commander in 9mm?
>>
>>34604230
They used to. Not sure if they quit making a steel frame 9 or not.

One thing I can tell you is to spend money wisely. 200 bucks seems like allot now but afterwards you won't regret it.

You get what you pay for applies here.

The Colt competition 9mm is steel frame and a fantastic buy for the price.
>>
>>34603689
If you can't afford more than $400 for a 1911... keep saving.
Buy a used Norinco 1911a1 or used Springfield Mil-Spec. The Armscor (RIA/Citadel) use to be more affordable & worth it but don't pay current prices when it's Only a $100~ more for something decent.

Why do people pay more in gunsmith work than the value of the cheap 1911 pistol. Gets my goat when I see RIA selling for $700 cause someone had all internals replaced, Barsto barrel, match bushing, etc. It's like modding out a Kia

Buy a beater 1911 in 45, shoot steel case ammo for cheap. A 9mm 1911 is SA, single stack, steel frame (soft shooting) and the only mags I had success with were Springfield but your reloading all the time cause 9mm/single stack. Anything outside 45 is a gamble on reliability, buying cheaper brands increases the likelihood of problems.

No, not really. Slide/frame length isn't much of a concern unless you're wearing shorts no man should be wearing.

The rounded off grip that some have can be helpful if you're fat, but it's not essential and can make the gun somewhat awkward to shoot.
>>
>>34604706
Not at all. Grip size is the same.

Ruger thumb safety. Arrow points to the sear engagement surface. This is normally filed to rest against the sear allowing no movement.

Every one of these is cast the same and dropped into the gun. May work fine, may not. Got two replacements sent from ruger. Both identical.

Ruger tech confirmed no fitting is done on the internals.
>>
>>34604895
Shoot it. Probably fine. I've just given ruger two chances on 1911s and both mine were junk.

Look up the cylinder and slide function test. It will show if it's set up properly.

The burr left from machining that locked the slide to the frame after 3 mags.

Ruger replaced the slide with the sloppy fit seen above.

I tried filing it down with no success. It's either a stupid hard slide or a piece of cutting tool broke off in it. I dunno.

Okay I'm just going to say it.
I'm confused as all fuck about 4 and 5 inch 1911 models. Are the 4 inchers commander models? I know the 5 are suppose to be standard. Most the time when I see a 1911 they look like a really really great copy of a colt cobra. I see one and think for the size it'd be great for conceal carry and then after inspecting it a little bit notice it's just a 380. Then I go look at a 45 and I'm like holy shit why did I want to buy something this size??

Yes and no. They're good guns but the metallurgy isn't there with them so heavy use has a tendency to turn them into a rattle trap. If you can, look into an auto ordnance or a ruger. I would stay away from norinco, they were good when there were no other options for a reasonably priced 1911. Now, I would sooner buy a tisas or something.
>>
>>34603689
from a functional or beater standpoint ria is great. for a base that you are going to upgrade horrible. there will be many tiny flaws that dont effect function but add up to make it a waste of time and effort to upgrade. these flaws are acceptable and expected because the gun is cheap. shit like >>34604933 >>34605003 which he finds unacceptable are normal on an ria which is fine cause ria is 300 bucks cheaper.

FWIW i've had ruger 1911 and was completely happy with it. Both reliable and accurate gun.

Got rid of it due to being a mondo poor fag and now i crave the 9mm LW commander. Reviews on it are pretty good, seems to be both reliable and accurate according to just about everyone who's owned one. IMHO I'd say that rugers are the cheapest 1911s on the market that I'd actually carry without giving the handgun a detailed going over and changing some minor things. If the ruger passed a basic reliability check(300-500rnds without issue) id have no issue carrying it. Remington and RIA seem to have more lemons and general issues but neither are bad truly bad imo.

>>34604706
No. They have the same sized grip which is the part of the gun that actually needs concealing. Nobodies going to notice an extra .75" of barrel(and i say this being a skinny jeans fag). That being said sometimes a longer barrel may poke you while sitting down.

>>34605241
5" is gov or stnadard length. 4.25" is commander. some manufacturers(kimber, springfield) complicate this by making 4.2" guns

Norincos are hot dogshit that look like they were made by a 10 year old chinese kid. Fitting is sloppy, finish is awful, small parts are cast potmetal junk. They were only good when it was a norinco or drop a laughable amount of money for the most basic of 1911s from any other manufacturer making them.
>>34608340

Thinking about buying a brand new Kimber 1911.
I was thinking maybe the Royal II or Raptor II.
Is it worth it? In my opinion it's expensive as fuck. But the fit and finish etc looks really good. Compared to the R1 or Ruger 1911 it's looks and feel so much better.
Is a Coonan in .357 a good alternative compared to 45 acp?
Would appreciate some advice. Since I'm completely new to handguns.

Or should I just buy a H&K mk23 instead?
>>
>>34608340
Had both and honestly, the Norinco has the tisas on everything but weight, but it's because Norinco legitimately used scrap building steel for theirs.
>>
>>34613995
I feel that kimber dollar to gun ratio stops being good at their cheapest model with front strap checkering.

Everything above that is just looks. You don't get better small parts or barrels by stepping up to a higher cost model.

Not a fan of the Swartz safety either. Kimber uses a firing pin stop that leaves a gap in the slide that can potentially catch on the safety plunger.

I think lots of kimber guns run just fine, and the one time I used their customer service I had a good experience.
>>
>>34613995
>Thinking about buying a brand new Kimber 1911.
Number use to be decent, now overpriced and lots of QC issues. Buy a Colt or go semicustom

>Is a Coonan in .357 a good alternative compared to 45 acp?
No, nobody else makes it in 357 for a reason. Its a novelty gun thats overpriced. If you want 357 mag get a revolver.

>Or should I just buy a H&K mk23 instead?
If you want one go for it, could be an investment since prices keep going up. To save scratch buy a USP Tactical
>>
>>34614074
That scrap steel is also why it's harder than production guns. Without getting into the soft/flex argument it's still decent steel.

Kimber is pretty much "save a bit more and get something nice" tier by now unless you're buying second-hand from someone who will let you put it through its paces before buying.

Worse still, buying a Kimber means money goes to NY, and this state doesn't deserve your money.

>>34616604
The Walther/Colt I posted is designed around 22lr though
I'm not planning on using a conversion kit or anything like that
I don't care about looking cool, I want something I can (relatively easily) customize.
>>
>>34616629
Glock is legos if want easy customization. Then buy a advantage arms conversion
>>
>>34616648
The Glocks I've shot feel like they're made of literal plastic Legos.
I'm not a fan of Glock at all.
>>
>>34616629
>The Walther/Colt I posted is designed around 22lr though
no its not its a pile of crap whos main purpose is looking like a 1911
theres a difference between make a 22lr and make something look like X and be chambered in 22 as an afterthought.
>>
>>34616666
Go buy the Walther then since they make so many 1911s. Again if you want a 22 find a different pistol. Get a SA Mil-Spec and add parts to fulfil your fantastical wishes.
>>
new-fag to 1911's. whats a good American classic looking fullsize 1911?
it just has to look american
>>
>>34617016

It's like you are basically trying to tell me that I shouldn't want what I want, which is fine if that's your opinion but isn't helpful in answering my original question.
>>
>>34617025
You don't get anymore classic american in a 1911 than a series 70 colt.

How do you guys rate the Auto Ordnance 1911's? I got one as my first pistol and I've had issues with it giving me FTF's. I have Mec-Gar, Springfield and Wilson Combat magazines. I tried getting an 18.5# spring and I still have the issue. I don't think it's limpwristing either because I let the RO shoot it too. He had the same issue.
>>
>>34619126
How exactly does it jam up? Does the round get out of the magazine?

Never shot an AO before, but maybe I can help.

>>34619164
The round does exit the magazine. It seems to be going in nose up. Could it be an issue of break-in? I only have like 250 rounds through the gun.
>>
>>34619241
I'd bet on it being the extractor hook. Take the slide off and try to fit an empty case up into the extractor. Ideally the extractor hook would lightly hold the case with it's springyness, but still let the case slide under the hook relatively easily.
>>
>>34619281
It was pretty hard to get the round under the extractor. I wanted to chalk that up to being new with pistols but maybe I do need a new extractor. Is it worth it to spring for a Wilson one?
>>
>>34604761
then what would be the best pistol to buy?
>>
>>34619298
idk. I bought one of the cheaper ones and reshaped it to my liking. I'll get a pic in a second.
>>
Anybody know of a good commander length 9mm? Been thinking the ruger LW commander was probably my best bet for something that wasn't dan wesson level in price. Any alternatives or opinions on it? I know RIA makes some 9mm models but not sure if i can trust those

I ground off the chunks along the middle of the shafts because they limited movement and shaped the chunk just behind the hook so it could move inward enough to provide good tension but not too much that it would block anything.

Can you link me a good video or a detailed list of things i should check for when buying a brand new one?
>>
>>34623603
Not him but here is what I look for

Rack slide, push down on barrel hood. Should have little to no movement.

Slide play is fine. Make sure it is fairly centered and not rubbing frame.

Thumb safety should have a good positive on/off click. No mush.

Trigger: pretravel is fine and good in most cases. Should be fairly crisp and not excessively heavy. Heavy and crisp is better than light and mushy.

Learn the cylinder and slide function test. Easy to perform and will tell you if everything is functioning properly.

My first pistol was an ati 1911. Even though I've bought much better guns over the years, it's easily still my favorite. Silky smooth blued finish, in 800+ rounds I've never had a jam, misfire, or return to battery failure. It's all looseygoosey and feels like a seasoned pistol, I'll shoot it till it can't be shot anymore. Definitely a cut above r.i.a

You could get by with only small files and a vice. That's basically all I used.

Imo I wouldn't bother with those expensive internal spring extractors. They're just not needed.

Check for side to side slop between the barrel and slide when it's in battery as well.
