Dillinger's gang posed as rich oilmen and had a guy named Hyman Lebman make several guns for them. Included 1911's converted to full auto and mounted with a Thompson foregrip and cutt's compensator. Also modifications of Winchester 1907. Others may have used Remington Model 8's and other early semi-autos.

Until the NFA, full autos were available mail order and many were available post-ww1, including maxim machine guns, though it's unlikely many of these were ever used by criminal elements. Most of them wouldn't have even owned Thompsons either, but they would loot police and national guard armories and that's what those places were getting back then.
