Since OP doesn't have an actual question

Who thought that the Astra 600 was a good idea?
A straight blowback 9mm?
They recoil like a fucker considering it's all steel and weighs a goddamned brick

how does birb do this?
>>
>>34599103
Hi Point did.

Does anyone know if there's an actual legal limit to how much ammunition and firearms you can transport on the interstate?
>>
What's the protocol for flying commercially with ammo? I know the rules for a gun, and that you have to declare it and whatnot, but I have no idea what the rules are for ammo but no gun.

Do I still have to declare it at check-in and fill out one of those little cards? I know to keep it under 11 lbs. and leave it in the original boxes. But the Delta website doesn't have anything for just the ammo.

I'm flying Delta, if that helps.

When oiling my SKS, should I oil the gas chamber as well? Or should I just rinse it with water and soap then dry it?

Also on the head of my gas piston, there is a bunch of gunpowder residue that won't come off no matter how hard I scrub. Any ideas?
>>
>>34599131

>>
>>34599352
what are you scrubbing it with?
>>
>>34599369

>>
>>34599352
If you want to clean it, just hit it with a bit of solvent and then put only a tiny amount of oil on it. You don't want to use water and soap and then just leave it bare, or it will rust straight to fuck. It doesn't need much cleaning.

I don't have a question but this is a little bit of a blog post I guess. So I was at the range with my M70A a couple years ago with a friend. He was shooting and neither of us had noticed my front sight was loose. Off it went eventually. We couldn't find the damn thing so we went home. Of course, there are no spare parts for this gun available in the US. 2-3 years ago, what I did today may not have been as cheap, but the prices on 3d printing metal have come way down.

I broke out my calipers and found a bunch of reference photos online. I put it into CAD and calibrated the size of the reference images based on the measurements I took of my actual gun. This let me get a fairly good idea of the size/shape of the front sight. It won't be perfect but then again the original one wasn't either so I'm not expecting much. Anything is better than nothing at this point.
>>
>>34599398
Thanks, did just that then scrubbed with 0000 steel wool and it came right off.

On another note, did anyone know a good way to get mild surface rust off and keep it off? I noticed that some has built up in the small areas like serial numbers, numbers, etc

>>
>>34599523
There are several options for getting rust off, but once it's off, try something like Renaissance Wax. It does a good job of preservation long-term. You'll need to re-apply after shooting, of course.
>>
>>34599523
Oil it. And oil it every time you finger-fuck it, and twice a month besides. In short order, the rust and exposed steel will become black iron oxide instead of red. Black iron oxide tightly adheres to the surface and protects it from further damage. This is similar to most finishes of steel guns.
>>
>>34599567
I should add that after it's no longer rusty, you don't have to oil it religiously. Just after use or rubbing your greasy hands on it.

>>
>>34599352
I used a bronze brush on my piston head ;) keep in mind as long as you dunk it in water then oil it won't get rusty. The caked on carbon fouling will just keep accumulating either way.

Why do you have to send guns to an FFL in America? Canadians can have guns shipped right to their door, I thought you were america am I wrong?

Mechanical engineering, but not for any of those reasons. Fuck data entry.
>>
>>34600229

>>34600254
Rifles and shotguns before 21 are the exceptions, not the other way around. That is to say it operates on a permission system rather than a ban system. Machineguns, DDs, AOWs, firearms, handguns, or anything else the ATF would say is not a rifle or shotgun are all 21 or older.
>>

18 for long gun 21 for everything else. this is for buying from ffl not ownership. depending on the state a dad could gift a 1 year old a shockwave and it would be fine.

A BSME is flexible enough to open you up for almost any career at a company where you'll be applying science, math, and/or common sense to solve problems. You will likely not be physically touching anything other than a computer and a calculator for a while, so don't go thinking that the degree would train or qualify you to be an assembly technician, welder, etc.

It's also worth noting that a lot of entry level BSME jobs are poorly matched even to the skills you might practice while obtaining the degree. You could end up doing glorified customer service work (field service engineer), drafting (design engineer), clerical tasks associated with engineering information (haven't seen a position dedicated to solely this), standards compliance, and many more. Depending on where you end up, you might not use the skills your degree taught you at all other than the "how to teach yourself" stuff that everyone holds up as the real value of a four year degree.

You could say that a BSME is what liberal arts was supposed to be. It's a degree that can be specialized to suit your goal of ending up with a specific job after you graduate, but if you're not careful could also end up being useless. It's also important to note that you'll be competing for jobs against people that managed to land internships in their sophomore or junior years, which will appear on their resumes as entire years of experience.

TLDR; if you're considering a BSME, think long and hard about where you think it'll take you and what you want to do when you get there. You can learn to work on guns without getting a degree.

There's a gun show coming up this weekend, and one of the vendors there always has pic related. I live in Fuddland, Iowa, so I doubt it will ever be sold (I've seen it around for at least the past 3 years at various gun shows in the area).
Is $1200 a decent price for it? I don't know the condition, since I've never examined it closely, but I imagine I can jew him down a bit for it.

Question for you guys:

Why does the Brady Law even exist? It's dumb that people who get into domestic arguments with their spouse are barred from the right to defend themselves.

I've met plenty of obnoxious women over the years who needed to be told by their man. Getting a domestic violence charge doesn't necessarily mean you're a violent person.

The right to keep and bear arms should be for everyone and not restricted based on bullshit like roughing some woman up a little for stepping out of her place.
>>
>>34606138
I suppose the logic is that if you can't control yourself to not smack the arguably most important person in your life around in an argument, then you aren't going to control yourself with a firearm.

I'm going to cowardly dodge that issue by pointing out that revoking a constitutional right on a misdemeanor sets bad precedent, and it's up to states and cities to change domestic abuse through their legislatures to a felony charge if it's that important.

Considering that A) Yes, they can store ammo in the home. and B) CCers are pretty much responsible for 0.01% of violent crime in the US, I'd say the rebuttal is a combination of bullshit and irrelevant.

Plus, it kinda points out that if you arm the fuck out of everyone and don't treat it like it's an evil murdering tool, you get a nation that respects it and uses it properly. And it thoroughly destroys the idea that guns cause crime. No amount of whinging about ammo can rebut that part.

Semi all the way. It's worth the $50ish more.

A bolt action, mag fed 22 might be a pretty fun plinker. However, I'd stay the hell away from anything with a manually-cocked striker or single feed. By manually-cocked I mean you have to cock the striker by hand after closing the bolt. Cycling the action doesn't do it automatically. Single shot 22's also suck because they usually don't have feed ramps or other feeding mechanisms. So you have to manually insert a round all the way into the firing chamber.

I've got a Westpoint Model 121 I was given that's a manually-cocked single shot bolt action 22lr. It's a chore to shoot. Anything with a magazine, detachable box or tube, and a repeating action is most desirable. 22lr is great because it's a cheap, low recoil round that's highly controllable in rapid fire. Getting a bolt action doesn't really let you get the most out of the round.

My suggestion get the 5 rounder and take the 50 dollars you saved and throw that at some 30 rounders. Midway's got their mini14 factory mags on sale right now for about 34 a pop for 30 rounders. Tapco also has polymer mini-14 mags, but I don't really know what the quality of those are.

The title is bad, but the stuff inside is good. Don Mann's "The Modern Day Gunslinger" talks about 8 in Group as "combat accuracy". More accuracy is better but if you can keep it in 8 inches, that's a start. Lot of good drills and ways of thinking in that book.

what does /k/ think of the tantal?

opinion on polish guns in general
>>
>>34619848
Why do you feel the need to ask for opinions about a 10/22? And no, .22 is shit for defense, I'd use the .38, until I saved up $200 for a shotgun.
>>
>>34619848
It's basically a meme. Rimfire ammo is not reliable enough for use in dangerous situations. Get some good 125 grain JHP .38 special.

>>34619656
Get the dovetail faced and fit it with a new front sight or mount an optic. Nothing else will work reliably.

>>34614857
Walk in. Say, "Hey, I'm Anon, here to pick up my (gun name here)." Fill out paperwork. Pay transfer fee. Go shooting.

>>34613928
6.5x55 is a fantastic hunting round for medium game. It can basically do anything a 260 can do, so it's good for up to 600 yards accurately, and can be pushed out further in the right conditions. If you're within 300 yards of a deer, boar, or elk it is in grave danger with a 6.5x55 at your side.

So i know this is going to get a bunch of not enough info replies. But my brother has a yugo? sks and it worked fine we cleaned it when he got it shot it it worked cleaned it again put it away. A couple month later we shoot it and it jammed shut. OK, Maybe a bad shell shot it a couple more times Worked fine then kept jamming shut but those were just fixed my manually pulling the bolt back. Whatever put it away let me clean it when we get back. Cleaned it nothing was out of place I didn't even see any scratch marks where it would be rubbing. His friend took it out and he said he shot it and the bolt wouldn't move at all and had to beat it back with his hand. Does anyone know of anything that could be wrong?

Why do 8mm blanks exist, when there are blanks for common calibers available? You'd think using a special case would make it needlessly expensive.
>>
>>34621400

Easiest way is to know enough about the military to pick apart his story. Generally Stolen Valor types know fuck-all and it will become blindingly obvious with enough questions. What was your MOS? is a good place to start. Where'd you go to Basic? How many years did you serve? What unit? How many deployments and where? What was your final rank and pay grade? These are all questions any vet could answer straight away. If he gets dodgy or defensive chances are he's a phony.

No. Rust is not a disease; you're not going to contaminate things by using the same tools. And if you remember to use a little oil, you won't have any rust to worry about, anyhow.
>>
>>34621703
You need the press, something like the Lee Classic 4-hole turret press. And I'd get another turret so you don't have to measure and reset things every time you change caliber.

You'll need dies for each caliber. It may be unnecessary, but I get the four-die sets made of carbide, so I don't have to worry about things getting stuck (either in different guns or in the press).

You need primers, which can be obtained cheapest normally at any big box sporting store. 9mm uses Small Pistol sized, and .44 you'll have to check your brass to see.

You'll need powder. If your press doesn't come with a book detailing every type of powder and how much to use, just look around online. There are lots of brands, also easiest to obtain at your Cabellas or whatever.

You'll need brass of course. Remember to steal other people's brass at the range; it's a great way to make friends.

And lastly you'll need boolits. While you may want to cast your own, I've found that hunting around online will get you some pretty good deals. Rocky Mountain Reloading normally has some good deals, and their shipping rates aren't absurd. Get whatever kind you're looking for for your caliber, and you should be good to go. The box they're shipped in will be heavy as shit if you get a thousand rounds or so at a time. Be sure to leave cookies for your mailman this Christmas.

Has anyone got a line on audio from a bunch of Australians in Vietnam? Was a black video only displaying subtitles of their comms as they started a patrol and eventually got into contact with a company sized element. Chatter starts getting hairy with one of the officers calling artillery on his own position, resupply in the middle of the engagement. Ends with a casualty and LACE report back to their PB, very solemn as they lost a lot but ended up taking down a lot of hostile NVA. Long Tan or something rings a bell. Thanks in advance, I pay with photo

Looking for some ammo recommendations.

What is a good .40 defensive/CCW/HD round, and a good 5.56 HD/SHTF round? For shits I would be interested in defensive ammo input in all calibers and I am sure other anons would be too.

For rifle, I am going to assume a recommended round will be much heavier than a 55-gr M193 round I shoot at the range. How will this affect point-of-aim/point-of-impact, and should I go ahead and zero with the defensive load and just expect a discrepancy when it comes to range work with cheaper ammo?
>>
>>34623811
Lot's of old timer here still kill hogs with boring old 55gr spire point. Unless you're doing a lot of 200+ shooting, my vote is keep training with 55gr FMJ and load SPs for hunting/SD.

Alternatively, you could switch to 62gr FMJ / bonded for a little more money if you want to shoot a heavier bullet.

Battleships have a fuckton of displacement and use big guns
Destroyers are small and stealthy and depending on the era you're referring to rely more on torpedoes and/or missiles because their guns are pretty useless against heavily armored targets.

Ok I'll shoot a question

So you know how people can own their own private gun ranges? Would it be possible to purchase some land in the desert and have ones own personal Bomb/Explosives range?

I'm assuming the environmental fees and safety fees would be large, but Id love to have a large area of land that pilots with Warbirds or people with other explosive/ Destructive devices IE tanks missiles etc can go and actually use them.

I've seen some fake bombs drop out of B-17s and some shitty 50 gallon gas can explosions rigged on the ground but Id really love to see some HD footage of WWII era munitions being set off and actually put these bombers back to use.

Imagine piloting a B-17 with a working norden bombsight with 3 other bombers in formation and you all just carpet bomb the shit out of some fake Hollywood prop town that you set up as a target with little stick figure Nazis.

In case anyone is interested in the follow-up, TSA says you DO have to declare it, but Delta doesn't really know what to do if you're flying with just ammo and no gun. They make you fill out a little form saying your gun is unloaded and put it in the suitcase, they ask if the ammo is in boxes, and then they put a CAGPT (care and give protection to) tag on it, which means to not lose it or loot it, and to not let it go on a baggage carousel. It also means they'll put big zip ties on it before they let you have it back, so you can't do like that asshole in Florida and shoot up the place once you arrive.

Also it apparently means they'll crush your luggage, but at least they're really nice about it and will give you a new bag that's better than the beat up piece of shit you've been meaning to replace anyhow.
