Australian here, doing paramilitary drills and stuff like going on hikes and camping sounds like it'd be fun, but I wouldn't bother (or recommend) doing it for actual ordinary daily use, I don't think there's really enough crime where I live to justify anything like that.

The worst crime in my city is kids searching through unlocked cars for loose change during the night, and I don't really care if they take a few dollars every now and then. Although one time they stole my biscuits, didn't have any for smoko the next day, I was ropeable then.

We actually have had three drive-by shootings in the last few weeks in the early hours of the morning, but they were bikies, they tend to aim specifically at their target.

I've thought about it and may go through with it one day. Although definitely not a neighborhood watch. I've always wanted to have my own business with guys doing world merc work like in MGSV. But a lot of stuff gets in the way when it comes to making it a reality. The biggest thing is capital because of how it works. My friend worked for a security firm and explained that you have to met payroll and equipment costs before you even win contracts against other companies. Lots of guys he worked with got handed companies and ran them into the ground because they thought it was easy to do. But then they went into bankruptcy and started losing contracts right and left because of stupid mistakes. And this is for everything big to small, his company did stuff ranging from military police and firefighters in Iraq to security guards for corporation buildings. Everything gets amplified into the millions when you make a PMC which I would want to do but that's nowhere in the near future.
And money is just the beginning of problems. Training, confidentiality, Government clearances, Gov't laws, the list goes on the bigger you get. Even on a small level like this, those guys legally can't do anything unless actively fired upon or attacked in 99% of situations. So them acting tough does nothing for them. A security team in the U.S realistically has the same power, action, and legality of a mall cop.

It's not 2010 anymore, you're not going to be able to compete against companies that have had government contracts since 2003. You're going to be local, and then you'll probably give up because that shit sucks.

You have to deal with lazy, incompetent people who don't take their job seriously in the tiniest bit, because you won't be able to afford to hire serious professionals without some major capital. Which will be hard to raise, since on a small time level, clients expect $30/hr protection but only want to pay 10/hr. For some odd reason, they expect someone who will stop robberies, help their staff do their jobs, enforce their arbitrary corporate rules, never take breaks, and stay patrolling and roving for an entire 8-12 hour shift.

I had a receiving manager call and complain to me that one of our guards didn't help his guys unload a big order, and made the driver wait until the receiving guys arrived at the dock (where the fuck they were is anyone's guess). I informed him politely that his companies insurance would not cover our employees if they were injured assisting him with his job, and they're not protected from liability. It was also, not his job, and not what they paid us for. He pitched a fit and said that he'd talk to the owner (Who I went to high school with) and get our contract cancelled.

I basically had to hang up on him. It's not the first time this has happened (guard refusing to take towels to a room in a hotel, guard not carrying coin bags in a bank, guards not letting "residents" into an apartment without valid ID) it's a constant stream of shit.

It sucks, and it's thankless, and you're not going to be fighting wars in the bush for super powers.

Some friends and myself did have a sort-of militia/armed neighborhood watch going on. Then out of nowhere a "friend of a friend" showed up and wanted to join. He bugged us about it every day. Eventually, we pooled some money and ran a background check on the guy with a 3rd party service.
