>>
I'm trying an RMR on my Versa Max, but I think bead or fibre optic is the most versatile. Fitment is far more important.
>>
I preferred beads until I got a really good ghost ring. I still like bead for sporting but security models just feel better with a high visibility sight. The most annoying thing with fibers is color fade and replacing the wire.
I also used standard stocks for ages and finally tried a pistol stock. Regular is probably still better but I didn't like the way the 870 fit me anymore.
>>
>>34597558
I would prefer a ghost ring for use with slugs.
went with a red dot instead as It ended up being cheaper than trying to install aftermarket irons.
I cant make up my mind if i like it though.
I like the simplicity of a bead, but I want that longer range accuracy.

I thought about it, but that ammopal thing looks like it might be better unless it either warps shells (like I've heard Saiga mags do sometimes) or I can just stick cards into my AK mag pouches and save money that way.

The cool thing about card systems is that they can indeed be woven into an existing magazine carrier system with a little ingenuity. This is a manufactured one but you can take some easy cues here and use paracord to hold the cards to the rig. You can either hold them captive on the rig with velcro or you can use them loose in a pouch before slapping it on the side of your gun to keep the shells closer on hand. The AmmoPAL doesn't warp shells from what I've seen due to the rocking follower and overall different design. You can also alternate shell direction which increases capacity by two rounds and would nullify the issue of crushed shells since you would no longer have brass rim on brass. S'little bulky though, but rather lightweight.
>>

>>
>>34602154
skip the 88 unless you are poor. buy a 500, if you are considering an ithaca you can afford a 500. if you really want an ithaca go search gunstores till you find one or give up and buy a mossberg.
>>
>>34602154
I don't care for Ithaca 37s because they eject and feed from the same hole which has its quirks. The Maverick 88 is for poorfags, go for the real 500 series guns unless you want to spend the money saved on getting aftermarket parts.

bead. better for tracking targets, and even for more "aimed" shots, its pretty easy to point shoot anything inside of 50 yards anyway by just looking down the barrel and shooting instinctively, like you would with a longbow
>>
What is the most time tested durable pump action shotgun?
>>
>>34601443
It's been fine so far, other than the fact that I have to adjust to actually looking at my sight rather than pointing like I do with clays. It's held zero fine through ~400 rounds of 2 3/4 #7.5 shot and ~100 rounds of 00 buck. I say go with a compact reflex sight like the RMR for the bigger dot.

Most smoothbore 12 gauge shotguns work flawlessly at 100 yards with slugs.

If you haven't shot slugs at 100 yards yet, you are wrong.

Can we get magpul shotgun videos in here yet? Slug changeovers make shotguns as effective as most rifles.

>>
>>34603077
The problem is that people get a shotgun with a bead sight and scream SHOTGUN IS FINE until they're blue in the face. It came that way 200 years ago so obviously technology cannot improve in that time. With a good load and proper sights you can easily hit a dinnerplate out to 200 yards but using a shotgun with a bead sight is like using a rifle with only the front post. It works only within the ranges that you really can't possibly miss at.

upgrade potential
the price difference between a 500 and 88 is like 100 bucks
if you ever want to swap out forends on an 88 you have to swap the whole assembly which is 30-40 on its own without the handguard.
when you think your saving 100 bucks the 88s a great deal but if you plan to mod it in anyway all the "cheap" benefits vanish

the 88 lacks drilled and tapped holes in the receiver. with these holes you can add a rail. this is minor doesnt really matter cause rails are dumb.
the biggest difference is the 500 can come with a 2 barrel combo for 300-350ish
now the 18 inch barrel is cheap roughly 80-100 bucks but the longer barrels are 120+ new.
if you were to get the standard 18 inch barrel 88 then try to get a longer barrel later you are well over the cost of a 500.

the 18 inch barrel looks cool but for practical shooting you want a long barrel on your shotgun. with an 18-20 your shotgun is a rangetoy/closetdefender. a longer barrel lets you shoot clays/skeet and make the whole thing fun. with a short barrel you feel like a badass but wont shoot it regularly it will spend 95% of its life rusting in a closet. 5% blasting at dirt. you can shoot clays with a shorter barrel plenty of people do but as new shooter you wont enjoy it. you will borrow someone else gun and be like holy fuck why is this so easy now.

you might think well i want an hd shotgun i need the short barrel. no you dont, not when ars are so fucking cheap. unless 200 really is all you can afford and you need a gun now.

another anon here

to expand, the 88 has made in mexico parts to save on labor.

As far as changing the forend, the 88 has the action bars directly attached to a pump arm that rides the tube. The 500 uses a metal housing i believe, that the pump arm/ wood part will attach to, instead of the action bars being pinned to the hand holdy bit itself.

I found wood was more expensive than i wanted for the mossbergs but keep an eye open

Looking at a $250 PW87 for my first gun. Lightly used: according to the pawnshop owner, the previous guy bought it, went through half a box of shells and practically slammed it on the counter when he came to sell it.

I know it's a piece of shit from the factory, but it's supposed to get better after running some shells through it. And seven round capacity for less than $300 sounds pretty good.

you need to pre-drill a hole smaller than the screw where i highlighted.

it need to be on the bottom ridge of the stock not on either side.

The maverick 88 is a poverty mossberg 500 which is a poverty 590 which is a poverty 590a1.

The difference in price between these models should be insigifnicant compared to your ammo and training costs. If that's not true, you should not own a shotgun yet.

I recently inherited a Winchester 1897 (soon to be two, there's a damascus barrel one awaiting me), but the gun seems to jam up often between extracting the fired hull and chambering the next round. Guessing it's the modern ammo being too long and not reliably leaving the gun, combined with me shortstroking it or something. I'm pretty new to guns myself, my immediate family all dislike them.

The gun is about 100 years old at this point, but my grandparents kept good care of their stuff and it seems to still be in perfect working order. It's the one in this pic

its probably not, my buddy has one and we started getting issues with it. Turns a few screw had rattled loose. I cant remember which screw it was, so i suggest taking your gun apart and putting it back together.

Taking anything apart and putting it back together usually solves most problems.
>>
>>34610400
It's an ancient gun designed to fire either all brass or brass and paper rounds. The expanding plastic hulls cause issues, most notably because of the crimp that blows out after each shot which is not accounted for on old shotguns. You can get them bored out to accept modern shells if you want but it would be almost cheaper to get a new gun.
>>
>>34610445
actually paper shells are the least reliable and they blow out just like a plastic crimped shell. Also, The US goverment had so many issues with paper in the Spanish-American war and Philipines they had to switch to brass.

Plastic shells are just fine.

you are fucking special.

Paper is terrible, and was abonded for a reason. you dont know what you are talking about. Modern shells are just fine, unless you buy from a shitty brand.(but that goes for all ammo.)

Ive shot both out of multiple turn early 1900s and late 1800s shotguns. It makes no difference. Paper is shitty because it swells and looses integrity with humidity/moisture.

plastic hulls are just fine and reliable. The only problem i have ever seen on a plastic hull was in a modern gun and the gun had gashed the plastic hull.

you dont know what you are talking about.
>>
>>34610517
Are you referring to the difference between roll and star crimping?
Paper shells were also star crimped and plastic can be roll crimped.
The shell length is for fired length. Anyone loading a longer shell into a shorter chamber is clearly a fucking idiot and deserves whatever happens.

I already freaked out once because I thought my bolt was stuck, but all that happened was a screw was loose and blocking the way. I've taken the thing apart enough to clean it well, just not enough to make sure every last bit is in as intended. I will certainly do a more thorough job and see if that helps.

>>34610445
I assume short of trying to hunt down old shells, I'm SOL when it comes to getting stuff to shoot from it? 2 3/4" seems to be the shortest 12ga comes in and I'm not sure the difference in crimp styles will vary enough by brand for it to be solely the fault of the two I've already tried.

Even taking into account the money side of things, I think I'll leave it be since it goes back in the family as far as my great grandfather. I know a good gunsmith would likely not fuck the thing up, but I'd prefer to leave it as is. Recoil pad is a mess and cracking apart, so that is one part I'm making an exception for.

I really don't know what you're going on about. Paper hulls are terrible. I agree? I said nothing about the quality or usefulness of paper hulls, just that they were in use for the era that the gun was made in. I don't know why you think this is a promotion for a rightfully antiquated concept.
>>
>>34610663
The heat shield is aftermarket. None of them come with it
>>
>>34610584
Speaking as the person with the 1897 issue in the first place, plastic hulls may very well be the issue. The crimp on the paper hull doesn't look like it goes out much at all when fired, unlike plastic. The plastic hull I have right by me right now is just 5.5mm shorter than where it's supposed to pop out. The extractor itself looks to cover up about that much space in the opening, so I think I feel safe saying the crimp is the issue.

That's for the 590A1 with 20" heavy barrel.
You can get it directly from Mossberg for about $50, or from Aimpro for $80 (the one they sell is the exact same)

it sounds like you need tighten the action hook screw and check the main spring tension screw. On the action hook screw, light peening of the threads, or some temporary loctite will do to make sure it stays put. My 97 has been very dependable and will chew through anything, One thing you must consider is there'es a chance it is a shorter chamber such as 2-1/2 or 2-9/16, any gunsmith can cure this. Also a good quality cleaning of the chamber can go a long way. It's not a plastic shell issue, it's the brass or in some steel or aluminum) which some swell really bad. I've always had positive experiences with paper shells, theyre fine other than being more vulnerable to humidity, hence wax caooed brass shells. worth noting brass and paper shells have been around just as long.

Shortening shotgun barrels really doesnt make a difference.. Unless it like really short. The problem with shortening a barrel is that you cut off the choke. Making it cylinder bore, the shot isnt choked down so it spreads more. which could be good or bad depending on how you look at.

No, it's a completely rational choice if you want enough stopping power while not destroying all the shit in your house.

Thats for you to determine

personally i keep 00 2 3/4 in my HD.

I currently have some Olin in it because all my other ammo is 3" magnum or bird shot.

make the decision for you self.

you dont gain that much in velocity and spread/pattern is determined by choke not length. what barrel length does effect is handling, balance and weight distribution. longer barrels swing smoother. shorter barrels swing faster but are harder to stop.

well that not entirely true, a shorter barrel will have a much larger spread once it starts getting really short, even compared to a cylinder bore that is longer.

and you whole thing about swinging your barrel is retarded. I even decided to test it real quick just to be sure. and yeah thats bullshit.

Federal's flitecontrol cup also helps greatly to lower spread.
(pic unrelated, i don't know what cup that is)

Long barrels tend to be easier to instinctively aim.
And shorter barrels have lower mass, so they are EASIER to stop. So you're wrong.

you can stick a choke in a shortbarreled shotgun and adjust the pattern

this isnt something you can quickly test in your room with one gun by pointing it at a wall. its not a night and day difference either its subtle.

stop was probably a bad choice of words. what i meant is its harder to control where to stop. its moving faster because the gun is lighter. you are right the effort required to bring a lighter object to a complete stop will be less effort than bringing a heavier object to a stop.
an easier to understand comparison would be mouse sensitivity with low sensitivity crosshairs move slow and you can be more precise the trade off being you really have to move the mouse. a shorter gun would be like high sensitivity where you could do a 180 moving your mouse an inch but it would be harder for you to stop the crosshairs where you want them without over or under compensating since its moving much quicker.
of course its not as extreme as going from 3 sensitivity to 30 in cs. like i said its subtle. and theres no best either it depends on the persons preferences

Thanks!

What I've got here is a Walther "Automatische Schrotflinte" or "Automatic Shotgun" built by Deutsche Werke on Walther's patent from 1920-1930(maybe?)

It's a toggle action design chambered for 2-1/2" shells with a magazine tube that swings out.

You can find more info on a forums.gunboards thread with more history and a better looking specimen if you google "Walther semiauto shotgun"

Here is the action open and magazine exposed
