Knife Thread General

>newest acquisition edition

Had this delivered yesterday. My second Tenacious. The greenland digital is a little more desert themed than green, but still looks great with the silver metals. Still my favorite budget folder. Metal is easy to sharpen, and takes a wicked edge. Forces you to maintain it a lot, but you don't feel bad abusing it.

What's a good bottom budget, absolute poorfag knife for general EDC?

Hardmode: What's a good bottom budget, absolute poorfag knife for general EDC for someone stuck in a place with Britain-tier knife laws?

I'm trying to compile an EDC list for poorfags (doesn't have a job or a phone, trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, may or may not have $7 for the bus depending on the week kind of poorfag). The idea is to have a list of bottom-dollar tools that are actually worth buying, that won't break or require replacement anytime soon and will make it easier for someone to function day-to-day at the bottom of society. My first draft is an Opinel No.8, a Casio F-91W, and a free pen and paper from a bank or hotel lobby.

Jesus fuck. Just move to USA already and vote for Trump. Quit wasting away in your cuck country. All your alpha males already jumped shipped 2-5 hundred years ago and made USA.
>>
Asked last thread and no response. Whats the best sharpening system for less than $60 or should i just buy a bunch of stones?
>>
>>34591351

Oh boy. I don't know about that. I am currently saving my pennies for a top of the line wicked edge system. From my research stones are the best, but take a lot of practice. I bet you could take a few sum total of $50 stones and practice with them and get pretty damn good, assuming you're using them on cheap knives.

For your budget get a lansky kit and a leather strop and jewlers compound. If you have a chefs steel then use it often and you shouldn't need to sharpen again for months.

I'm an American, I just know there are cucked states and cucked countries and I'd like to have a helpful list as a copy-pasta for those folks. Encouraging a mentality of self-reliance and local resiliency combats the globalist nanny state: help me sow the seeds of Liberty.

My EDC is a S&W M&P 9 Shield in a Blackhawk ARC IWB holster, a Streamlight MicroStream, one of several pocket knives, one of several watches, and generally also my phone, a Leatherman, and a Rite in the Rain pad with a writing utensil.

>>34591385
That's correct. I forget all of their rules, and they vary slightly across the isles, but the Opinel No.8 has a blade that is too long (I believe it generally has to be <3" for carry) and locking folders are prohibited.

Well I'm pretty new to knives and don't even have one that costs more than $70 so I wanna keep it lower for some introductory stuff. I was looking at the sharpmaker+a strop but it seems to just be more of an upkeep type of thing even though I am an ocd piece of shit. I'd probably only be able to get 2 stones and a holder with my budget anyway, any problems with the lansky I should know about?

If you are at the point where affording a bus ride is sketchy, here's an idea
>When you would ride the bus, don't.
Instead, put that $7 in a safe spot for emergencies. Only for emergencies.
>When it's piled high enough...
Find a bike at a local yard sale or something and ride it instead, then buy a heavy-duty bike lock so tyrone doesn't jack it.

Very solid suggestions, thanks. I agree with keeping knives simple, my first pocket knives didn't have locks because my Dad wanted me to learn to use a folding knife without relying on the lock. Pic related, my first hunting knife.

>>34592269
Generally, agreed, this is the line of advice I give to poorfags. However, it's not always feasible or practical, sometimes a bus is the only way to get home, get showered, and get back to work in time for your next shift. Back when I was in pulling-myself-up-by-my-bootstraps mode, I legit slept in alleys, bushes, and public parks because I didn't always have time to get home (when I had a home) and back between shifts without the bus. I brought spare shirts, deodorant, and baby wipes to not completely smell like ass. Fortunately, I worked in a kitchen where you get sweaty and gross in the first 5 minutes and don't have dress in a very tidy fashion, so it didn't hurt me jobwise, but not everyone has this luxury. Also, I'm a 6'1" male martial artist with a good sense of situational awareness: it's less dangerous for me to walk around at sketch o'clock at night through questionable neighborhoods than it would be for, say, a 5'1" female with no martial competency or street smarts.

>>34592308

I think "most" is an important qualifier here. Cheap stainless knives can be good, but they're very often not, in my experience.

Hi friends, first time posting on /k/, so I hope this is the right thread to ask this kind of question. But something happened tonight and now I am set on arming myself and my partner.

>be me working late
>phone keeps going off, ignore it because I have a crazy lady for a regional manager
>check phone later
>partner has been supermoto around the suburbs
>bike fallen down an embankment in a empty lot, can't get it back up
>asks local for help
>"what did you say about my father"
>uwot.jpg
>partner says not to worry
>man starts charging at partner, releases an ungodly scream
>yelling that he is going to kill him
>partner starts booking it
>man chases him into the bushes where he has to hide until the police arrive

Upon learning about the situation, I obviously now want him to be armed when riding around. We live in Australia, so getting a gun is kind of out of the question. What sort of knife would you recommend for daily carry as well as for a bike? I would probably get one for myself, as I'm also looking at getting more into /out/ stuff and prepping.
>>
>>34593576
What are Aussie knife carry restrictions like? What's your budget? Do you have any martial experience influencing how you intend to put steel to flesh?

As far as I know, carrying a knife in public at all in Australia is illegal unless you have a "reasonable excuse". Knives such as butterfly knives are illegal entirely.
I'm looking to spend downwards of 60. I can't say I am overly familiar with the prices of knives so I'm not sure what that would get you.
As for having any experience- no. The only times I've ever used a knife where in Army Cadets and for random shit at home.

What kind of knives can you carry with a "reasonable excuse"? That's a weird concept to me, I've always thought it was unreasonable to *not* have a pocket knife: it's one of the most basic multi-purpose tools humans have.
>>
>>34593843
They likely mean for employment. Like a construction worker/electrician may have a knife because he actually uses it as a tool.

But your claim for it as a basic human tool is self-serving. Knives have been traditionally used has weapons (perhaps for nefarious purpose, perhaps for defense.) To deny that would be asinine.
>>
>>34593892
Knives were tools before they were "weapons".
To deny this is asinine.

Do you call a hammer a tool or a weapon?
What about a screwdriver?
A crowbar?
Pliers?
Scissors?
Shovel?
Ink pens?
A stick?
A stone?
A paperclip?
Anything can be a weapon.

What tool isn't self serving?

I was given a non-locking pocket knife, unsuitable for fighting, at age 5 because it's a basic tool that humans use. At age 12, I was given a slightly larger non-locking pocket knife as a tool for dressing game. Despite being a martial artist and concealed carrier who carried a pocket knife since age 5, I didn't start carrying one suitable as a weapon until I confiscated one from a belligerent drunk while working security at a club at age 24. I have as many scars from getting stabbed with a knife (one) as I do from being stabbed with a pencil: any tool can be used as a weapon (just ask a Filipino martial arts practitioner, they're really big on improvised weapons and are typically frighteningly creative in that regard).

This anon illustrates another good point: if you can't legally carry a knife, pick something else. A britbong anon was saying he defends himself from criminal scum in London with a big heavy padlock on a chain. Pick a weapon that won't get you arrested (like a wieldy crescent wrench), and practice with that. Take up a respectable martial art and learn how to fight: a force multiplier doesn't do you any good if it's multiplying zero.

Got this in the mail today.
It is amazing what you can get for your money today. No blade play, Lock up not too early or late, Flipper action works without wrist action, solid steel choice, grippy G10 even the centering is done right.
Blade needed a 1 minute touch up, one torx screw on the pocketclip could only be removed with unconventional means.

Next on the list is the Y-Start jin-01, budget channels claim it's the best chinese budget folder.

It's perfectly logically to carry all of those in your car. Knife goes in the pocket because it's small
>>
>>34595919
Hey dummy, the discussion was about carrying a knife with a "reasonable excuse." Try an keep up. If it's in your car, are you carrying it? You can leave your fucking knife in your car too.

The point I'm trying to make, is that _the point the laws are trying to make_ is if you are not carrying a knife for the purpose of "business" as it a tool for a carpenter, electrician, even a stock boy, etc while actively working, you are likely carrying it for the purpose of "self defense" which then may show prior "intent" to use it as a weapon.

These laws didn't come into existence yesterday, they have been around since the times of when knives where the only freely available weapon, like before guns became a "thing." Sure, knife laws have been expanded on, but they have been around for along time.

>Anyone who gives a 5 year old, or even a 12 year old a fucking knife is a moron
Anyone who raises a 12 year old who can't handle a simple tool for whittling, opening packages, processing food, etc. is a fucking moron. How incompetent were you at 12, really? Did your parents cut your steak for you? Chew it for you, too? 12 is the age requirement for a junior hunting license in Pennsylvania, 5 year olds without developmental issues have the fine motor skills to safely handle a knife with instruction.

Yes. At that age I hunted deer with a .30-30 Winchester lever gun and pheasant and turkey with a 12ga semi-auto and had no problem shooting a .30-06 bolt gun offhand. Those were all my Dad's guns, but he gave me a .22lr bolt gun to practice and my friend and I would go plinking without "adult" supervision on a very regular basis. Dad cut down the stock on a .30-30 so my little sister had a gun to shoot for deer hunting at age 12, and she could shoot safely and accurately.

I've seen kindergartners shooting .22s employing better safety practices than most adults and I've seen 12 year olds and younger shooting clays or hunting pheasants. It largely comes down to parenting and the kid's natural temperament. The idea of teenage years being separate from adulthood is a relatively modern concept created by industrialization and the establishment of high school as the norm: 12 year olds used to be considered almost-adults. Calvin Graham (illegally) enlisted as a 12 year old, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart at Guadalcanal--I think he could handle a pocket knife and more than a single shot .22.

I actually keep a small shovel in my minivan and it's saved my ass on multiple occasions with mud and snow. I also carry a pocket knife everyday and have used it several times today to open various types of packaging (food packaging, envelope, box of new van parts) and to pry open the obnoxious charging port cover on my cell phone. I don't really trust the liner lock on it so I'd be hesitant to use it for self defense.

>>34596004
>If it's in your car, are you carrying it?
If it's on your bike, are you carrying it? You asked about defense for your partner while riding: my Dad kept a small toolbox on his motorcycle and I kept a small tool bag on my bicycle. Something like a crescent wrench is both a useful bike tool and a usable weapon.

Do Aussies just sit around and finger their assholes when not on the clock? Don't you do things outside of your profession? What if you buy something that you need to use right away, like a phone charger, that's packaged in that hard, tough plastic? Do you have to wait until you get home to use a pair of safety scissors to open packages? Even my grandmother keeps a small folding knife in her bag for utilitarian purposes, and the knives my father and grandfathers carry are not suitable for self-defense, purely for utilitarian purposes.

>then tl;dr I got sick
Was it drugs, PA anon? Be honest.
What was the illness? Name it.

I was in a major car wreck, yes, thanks EMT, but mostly helicopter medivac (as I'm sure you know they are RNs) and was hospitalized for 10 months and took almost two years to fully rehab. I went back to school during the recovery, walking with first two crutches, then two canes, then one cane, and completed my bachelor's degree. Thankfully don't need the canes anymore, but will have to get a knee replacement- it was rekt and had three surgeries to repair ligaments.

But I digress, what was this mysterious life shattering illness that you got that ruined your educational dreams, but still allows you to provide life saving assistance to people in need of /life saving assistance.\

What was the illness, anon?

Well of course, it's part of your rape kit. Along with the crowbar, knife, duct tape, ski mask(balaclava), etc

>Do Aussies just sit around and finger their assholes when not on the clock?
You've never holidayed in Australia. This is like literally what they do.

But to your earlier point, I open mail at my desk with my letter opener. I open food packages with whatever knife I grab first in the knife block in the kitchen. I don't usually open a box of van parts because I am not a serial rapist, but if I do get a package, I have a couple of utility knives or "EDC" laying about, one in the kitchen "utility drawer," one in the office desk drawer, a few in the garage, an plenty of baby killing knives with my gun shit in The Room. But no, I don't walk around with a fuckign knife in my pocket because I usually wear a suit or casual clothes instead of a trench coat or fatigues. I don't operate operationally.

If you are the EMT, then you have a valid reason to carry an knife. If not, it's Asperg-Austim.

I've seen an actually bicycle used as a weapon, a few times, in Manhattan. Usually to push or bang(thrust forward) a dude but once, was sort of swung over the head- held from the bars and the rear tire was swung up and down onto some dudes face, then the fucker got back on his bike and rode away, bent tire and all. Bike messengers are dangerous;

Come to think of it, maybe I should carry a knife to stab them in case I get into an altercation. Your convinced me anon!

I am the EMT, and I use a pocket knife off the job extremely frequently. Do you never buy packages outside of your house and just stay home and shop on Amazon? Are traditional pocket knives really that alien to you? Pic related is approximately what my first pocket knife was like, and akin to what my father, grandfathers, and grandmother carry (my mother has pocket knives, but has gotten out the habit of carrying them since working in schools). It has a small, non-locking blade and isn't really suited to self-defense at all: it's just a tool.
>>
>>34596791
Insomnia bad enough that I couldn't carry coherent conversations. It costs around $500 to get an EMT certification, less than the cost of one credit at my university.

At the tail end of high school, I was eating 7 large meals a day and working out 3-5 hours a day. When I went to university, I wasn't in sports anymore so I slowed all of that down suddenly, and went from sleeping alone in a dark, quiet room to having 3 roommates (4 of us in the same fucking room) with different schedules and habits. I got straight As on all of my assignments for the first month and a half, then just kind of stopped functioning: I had been able to sleep less and less, and wasn't really able to hit REM sleep. Going days without sleep, and then sleeping only enough to rest my body but not my mind, messed me up pretty badly. I had self-corrected the issue by the time I talked to a competent doctor (student health services made it worse), but it turns out that sudden changes in diet and exercise can cause sleep disorders and are the first fucking things you should ask about when somebody comes to you with a sleep disorder (student health services didn't do this).

So, I went from being a straight-A student athlete to a crazy homeless guy. Got my head on straight after a bit, spent my days working out and reading. Eventually got a dishwashing job and saved up enough to get my EMT cert. Next step is to somehow get into medic school despite tanking my grades, then apply that towards a 4-year degree, then do a bioE grad program.

1) You don't need a fucking anvil. You can get by with a railroad track 4" wide and about a foot long. I found one at a yard sale for 10 bucks.
2)If you are an absolute autist, there's a dude 20 minutes away who as had like a dozen anvils on Craigslist for a few weeks back. Prices seemed to be in the $250 to $400 range They turn up there all the time. Check there.

Researching my list, I found out that while the larger Opinels lock, the smaller ones do not. The blades are available in carbon steel or stainless steel.

https://www.opinel.com/en/pocket-knives-and-tools/tradition

locking Opinel blade lengths:
No6 2.75"(7cm)
No7 3.14"(8cm)
No8 3.25"(8.5cm)
No9 3.54"(9cm)
No10 3.93"(10cm)
No12 4.72"(12cm)

non-locking Opinel blade lengths:
No5 2.36"(6cm)
No4 1.96"(5cm)
No3 1.57"(4cm)
No2 1.38"(3.5cm)

In your opinion, what's the ideal blade length for EDC? Opinel considers the 3.25" No8 to be their flagship, but the other two locking knives on the list at >>34603088 have 2.75" blades like the No6.

My 110 is a breddy good knife for $40. Sharp and nice in the hand, but it's very outdated. Very heavy, and the blade will snap back on you real quick. It will definitely cut someone who isn't experienced with knives.

It's an outdated, obsolete design, but a nice fun knife for the collector or history buff.

they become loose,
they dont fill the hand,
there's this stigma that para cord wrapped knives.tools are trash, and from what ive come to find thats mostly true,

yeah they serve a purpose for "incase you need some cordage" but once you used it then you have bare steel in your hand and now its less hand filling, making it easier to slip from your hand
and the shock can make it less than adequate if you want to chop something

ive found a lot of knife makers use paracord as a way to "make a handle" without really making a handle,

What is a good knife under 50 bucks? I'm pretty much going to use it to cut packing tape, zip ties and boxes at my job. I don't want something super cheapo, but don't want to spend too much because I keep losing these damn things.

Probably going to get a leatherman CT33 because that's what I always get and they work super well for what I need them for, but I might buy two to have a backup knife as well.

Does need to be survival tier, or "hurr tactical self defense" (I have a gun for that) just sharp enough to do the job, small enough to slip into my pocket and forget about it and quick to deploy with one hand.

Schrade sharpfinger has a full tang, secondary bevel, leather sheath and different ergonomics. It's just another option, which happens to fall in the specified price range.

Ontario utilitac is ~$27 on amazon, so you got me. I thought it was worth a mention, just being a two dollars out of $25 price cap.

Cold steel has some decent budget stuff in the price range, from experience.

That's valid, I'll probably throw it on the list. My hesitation comes from reports of the new Chinese Schrade production not being up to par with the old American products, and from a general distrust of Chinese manufacturing.

>price cap
That's my bad. I didn't set a price cap initially, but as I started looking around I realized there was no reason for a poorfag to spend more than $20 (or more than $10, in the case of an Opinel from Amazon or a Sanrenmu 7010 from GearBest) on a knife. Current goal is to find quality knives, watches, and flashlights under $20 each and multitools under $40.

>Cold steel has some decent budget stuff in the price range, from experience.
Any model recommendations? I'll compare reviews and construction to what's currently on the list--I'm trying to keep each section down to three entries, if practical.

>as I started looking around I realized there was no reason for a poorfag to spend more than $20 on a knife
>I'm trying to keep each section down to three entries, if practical.
This is also why I took the $26 Byrd Tern off of the list of non-locking knives once I found the Opinel No5-No2, Victorinox Classic, and Svord Peasant series. Sorry, >>34592105, it's a good suggestion for a cheap knife, but still too bourgeois for this list.
>>
>>34622160
Yeah, schrade going Chinese was kinda strange, and I agree quality has slipped noticeably because of that. I hear that Taylor brands no longer owns schrade anymore and it's been sold to another company, which is further cutting corners on manufacturing quality. (PM101/ Chris tanner's Jessica X knife drama)

List is pretty cool idea. Maybe someone can sticky it!

Budget folders
Cold steel kudu, 4.25 inch blade folder for $10. I put a full height convex on mine.

Budget fixed blades
Cold steel bird and trout is acually a really nice neck knife, especially with the sheath.
Also the CS Pendleton lite, Canadian belt knife, roachbelly and Finn bear are solid value.

An aim of $20 is pretty crippling in my opinion, especially in terms of design compromises (lack of one hand opening, size, ergonomics, etc). So many more options open up at $30 or even $25, but I understand that's neither here nor there.
>>
>>34621597
Ah shit dude, I didn't even see Victorinox listed there. I should start wearing my glasses more often.

Ka-bars aren't bad knifes right? Just expensive compared to the competition?
>>
>>34622651
They're not bad, but I hope they fixed that 90 degree blade-tang transition which formed a stress riser. Seen so many pictures of breakages at that that location. If you use it as a combat utility knife, as designed, you'll probably have no problems.

The timeline according to Wikipedia:
>July 2004, Imperial Schrade Corp. closes down shop in Ellenville, New York
>Schrade name purchased by Taylor Brands LLC
>July 2016, Smith and Wesson Holding Corporation announced that its Battenfeld Technologies division was to purchase Taylor Brands

>Maybe someone can sticky it!
It might fit in better on /diy/. As you pointed out, <$20 folders are lacking in features that make a good defensive folder (>implying folders are good defensive knives). Perhaps I should open a defensive knife category and call the old knife category "utilitarian knives"?

Making note of your Cold Steel suggestions for later review, I need to go to real life things for a while. The Kudu looks especially promising:

A consistent complaint I'm seeing across the fixed blade models is inconsistent sheath quality.

didnt bother didnt buy it cause wanted a kudu. bought it cause i wanted free shipping needed to add x amount to cart. the kudu was 5 bucks. if it was somewhat decent i would have put effort into sharpening it but its crap.
its good points
its large for a 5$ folder
its only 5$
the lock is mechanically neat
cons
the locking mech is a chore to fold
there isnt enough mass in the knife to do fun stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuF1Dd09Eeo
while the lock is acceptable the blade wiggles side to side making it fucking worthless

What's the consensus on the 7Cr17MoV high carbon stainless steel used on current production Schrade Sharpfingers?
>>
>>34622999
I like the design, but I wish they would use a better steel. I'd love to see it in 12C27 or something.
>>
Rat 2 should definitely be in the budget list, also the Mikov fish knife for a small folder.
>>
>>34623037
Also the tramontina machetes
>>
I'm in the market for a cheap folder, I already have a couple Opinels and they're great, but I'm looking for something a little quicker to open just for fun.

I know I'm not going to get a super steel for $30, but will 8Cr13MoV, 8Cr14MoV, or 9Cr18MoV stand up fairly well? Is there a big difference between these steels? I'm used to dealing with O1, 3V and ELMAX, I don't know much about any other steel.

Beauty of the Mora is it's cheap and you don't need to worry about "proper" cleaning.

Most of the rust looks like it's on the Scandi bevel, so just sharpening it would remove most of it.

As for the rest, of it, just some steel wool or better yet, like some 600 grit sand paper with some water.

Just try to oil it from time to time, most oils will do. Mineral Oil in particular is good because food friendly.

You may consider forcing a patina, basically controlled rust, it will be black not red. Just put some lemon or lime juice on the blade and let it sit for a day or two.
