Why don't soldiers/marines use buttpacks anymore? asymmetrical warfare where small units (platoons and squads) are more independent, especially when it comes to in field logistics seems like the perfect situation to use buttpacks for a "fighting load" where they can keep there most essential shit with them and only need to bring something like an assault pack for a 2-4 day patrol, and even then they would only need to pack the same shit that's in the buttpack, just more of to last them the 2-4 days is all.

Man our early 90's era equipment looked good...

US military uniforms seem to either look really good, or complete shit, no middle ground.

it's annoying to sit on your canteen

isn't it suppose to be put on the side for that exact reason?

I can't handle this much aesthetic at once! Why did I have to be born the year all this shit was happening instead of just being my age now then?
>>
How could I make a battle belt? Not for anything serious I just think it would be cool to attach a Weber belt to an old chicom chest rig. Might try it soon
>>
>>34590592

Because it's hard to sit down with them on.

Modern infantry is mounted as much as they can.

Buttpacks work best when you're walking in.
>>
>>34590592
What did they used to put in buttpacks?

Maintenance stuff? Food?

You ain't gonna put your poncho and poncho liner in there so you can't really spend the night with what's in there.

I believe they made a 3 day field pack that although on the large side, was still manageable in overall size and as name implies, let you pack enough shit for three days. poncho liner included.
>>
Because they suck and cant really hold anything. The type of stuff they held is kept in your assault pack.

Bullshit I'll get a decent photo some how but in my MOLLE 2 sustainment pack added to an ALICE web gear, i can fit 3 changes of underclothes and more than one weeks worth of food for marching (SOS food ration bars x 6 at 3,000 cals a day)

Of course I' m not the military and most of the front of the web gear is filled with survival essentials but fuck me if that isn't bull.

Because in the field, a marine needs immediate access to his friends ass and the packs were getting in the way

Great private pyler, you brought food and tape. Everything the modern soldier needs on the battlefield.

The area around your ass is usually now where your dump pouch and ifak goes, which are much more tactically relevant and requires quick access more than a pack that could just as easily sit on your back.

they're still issued, but no one really uses them. when you're rucking the only thing you want on your back is the ruck. dudes usually put them on the bottom of their ruck or assault pack.

>>34593402
>The area around your ass is usually now where your dump pouch and ifak goes
idk what marine sop is, but if your ifak is not on your chest or at your side you're in the wrong. why would you have the most vital piece of equipment that could save your life in a hard to reach spot?
>>
My understanding was that if you fall on it, its a great way to get a back injury. Never used one though, so dont know personally.
>>
240 gunner here, we use our butt packs all the time to carry our extra ammo.

>>34593402
nah dude, your Ifak goes on your kit and when I was a rifleman I had my dump pouch on my left hip.

Poncho straps to the bottom
>>
>>34593402
What's a dump pouch?
>>
>>34596498
A pouch to throw empty magazines in for later use, or partially used mags to keep stuff sorted. Would suck to grab what you think is a fresh mag but it's already half shot
>>
>>34590592
They are still issued as part of the USGI Rifleman's standard kit. They are designed as standalone waistpacks or to be integrated into the 3-day pack.

>>34593402
So this guy is causing debate from these guys:
>>34596363
>>34593481
Because they are being very inflexible about how IFAKs do. The *standard* is IFAK on the right side, but there is nothing "wrong" about having it somewhere else. The whole idea about having a SOP is so other people know where it is, but if your whole unit is wearing them in a different spot, then it works. I personally wore an IFAK on my belt because our unit all wore them on belts. As long as somebody can find it, it's fine.

That said, the GI way is still right side or weak side, depending. Plus these pictured marines:>>34593402 are obviously not a line unit because A) They have pistols, and B) Those pistols are 1911s. Probably MARSOC, which is not presentative of how a line unit sets up gear. 99% of people don't have pistols and thus not a ton of pistol mags to carry like the picture.

>>34596498
Place to toss empty or half empty mags. It's basically a modernization of the older practice of tossing used mags in your cargo pocket (which really sucks after a while).
>>
>>34596664
battle belts, pistols, combat shirts with their sleeves cuffed, and long hair. Definitely MARSOC or other cool guy equivalent.
>>
>>34596498
A little pack to put your favorite snacks in
>>
>>
>>34596498
A little pouch to shit in while you're in the field.
>>
>>34591068

MRE(s), woobie, wool GI sweater, and other misc items on the inside, poncho and overboots lashed to the outside.
>>
>>34591068
>You ain't gonna put your poncho and poncho liner in there so you can't really spend the night with what's in there.

People really overestimate what you need to have to spend the night out o a patrol. Yes, it is possible to survive one night without a poncho. I did 24+ hour overnight patrols in Afghanistan and the main thing to have was extra water and for us batteries for radios. I actually did wear a buttpack for these, and many guys used a sustainment pouch (roughly the size of an old buttpack) on the back of their armor. Toss some water bottles and batteries in there. Toss some stripped MREs or First Strikes in whatever room is left.

Is it ideal to go overnight without all the goodies you'd have in a real pack? Yes. Is it doable? Completely. Plus, it's not like we were making camp and setting up little tents and shit. At halts, we just made a perimeter with everybody prone and took turns sleeping in place in short spurts.

lol I was just about to answer about how my dad had one and would have his located on the bottom of his alice pack and here you go posting a picture of him. My dad is in the front passenger seat of that humvee. He told me they almost lit up that vehicle as it was coming up behind them but then they noticed it was full of journalists and cameras.

From what my dad told me, it was essentially a battle pack or 3-day pack. Contained your canteens, some extra ammo, MRE, poncho, paracord, etc. hooked onto your battle belt and chest harness that had your flashlight and whatever else happened to attach on there. Essentially it was for engagements when you were carrying the full ALICE pack with tents and stoves and all the camping shit. When contact happened you hit the quick disconnects on your alice pack, shedding a bunch of weight and were left with the Flak jacket, chest rig, and battle belt with the buttpack on it. This allowed for greater mobility and a smaller silhouette, plus you had everything you needed if you got separated from your main pack for at least three days. This of course is for when you go out on 2 week long excursions.

This was before MOLLE was on the battlefield and the heavy ceramic armor plates were commonplace where you could just attach everything to your chest, or the now popular 3 day backpack like this guy >>34597157 mentioned. Point is, unless you're going old school with a flak and an ALICE pack full camping shit and expecting contact while humping around hills for an extended period of time, there's really no reason for them. It's just outdated I guess.

here's another pic of my old man I see posted here all the time

Butt packs are basically german bread bags from ww2, you are supposed to keep rations in there. Downside is that thievery amongst fellow soldiers is common during times of starvation, place your mre deep in your pack and keep a protien bar taped into one of your mag pouch

the uniform cuts haven't changed much. The peg leg look is an air force thing they still do. They go get the calfs tailored in real tight. Looks dumb as fuck.
