What are your opinions on the Textron AirLand Scorpion?
>>
>>34579849
It's not a fuckzillion dollar fighter or BRRRRRRRRRT, so /k/ doesn't care.
>>
>>34579849

I really hope the Scorpion wins the OA-X over the fucking turbo props. We don't need more John McCains
>>
>>34579849
I like it. Hope it takes the oa-x competition. I know alot of people here like the Super Tucano, but I can't see something foreign winning. Props aren't as sexy to put on an Air Force recruitment ad anyways, so it's definitely a no-go, not when everything needs to look high-tech.
>>
>No track record, unproven.
>Too expensive for bombing guerillas and ISR
>Too useless for fighting in contested airspace
It's a big question mark with no well defined roles, at least for the US.

>>34579912
>I can't see something foreign winning
Everything is managed by local subsidiaries and contractors. In this case Sierra Nevada Corp.
It's a given and without exception. We pretty much never buy anything unless it has some play here. Nobody can say no to US interest, in the end.

doesnt Korea air have a T-50 thing that is basically the Textron but with fly-by-wire, training capacity for the F-35, supersonic, and limited AA potential for a few million more? That seems like a better budget plane desu. More expensive, but since you would simplify logistics for trainers/CAS/COIN/low-intensity patrol it may work out.
>>
>>34579895
What's wrong with turbo props. They're cheaper to maintain and fuel

The m-346 seems like a better plane. It has an aerial refueling probe which will help with training, and a basic radar.

>>34579849
C U T E
Budget air force options are a welcome reprieve from the usual. I'd fly the shit out of either of those.
>>
>>34579849
Too shitty for trainer, too expensive for OA-X. I hope the OV-10 wins.
>>
>>34579849
Its cute.

>Super Tucano won't win because of US congress Je... Lobby.

The plane follows all the requirements, it's already builts in US for FMS program and it beat the Texan for this same progress.

Quite bullshit, but it's politics.

>>
>>34582086
no, i'm making fun of you for going "WAIT NO I DIDN'T UNKNOWINGLY MAKE A MISTAKE GUYS, I'M JUST REALLY TIRED I SWEAR I'M NOT STUPID HAHA PLEASE DON'T THINK LESS OF ME"
>>
Good, but don't fit on what USAF is asking.
>>
>>34582096
Dude what
Being tired/drunk/high are and always have been given as valid reasons for a typo.
>>
>>34580414

Prop attack aircraft like the Super Tucano or the AT-6B are more susceptible to ground fire, lighter with a lighter, more fragile design.
>>
>>34579849
I'm giddy for it, just don't know about the other /k/ommandos
>>
>>34582060

Exactly, it's pretty poorly suited for the role the USAF is looking for. Also the M-346 is basically out of the USAF TX competition as well so it would be pretty weird for it to be entered in another competition.
>>
>>34580414
>harder to have redundant engines
>easier to damage with ground fire

Would you rather be going <600 km/h getting shot at with a 12.7 or 14.5 mm hmg or >800 km/h?

a CUTE
>>
>>34579849
It's interesting, and I hope it's development goes well. I can't realistically see the USAF using it widely, because someone in our brilliant government will inevitably say "We just spent $1trillion on the F-35" (False I know) "Why are we using these inferior planes?"

And it will cause a budget issue that will result in production getting cut.

As an airframe though, it's very interesting. It opens the door to allowing much large involvement/operations against ISIS, Boko Haram, etc, while costing a lot less.
>>
Reminder that Trump just recently nominated the CEO of Textron as undersecretary of AT&L.

>People seriously think the modern air force is going to let people see them flying props
>>
>>34584392
Watching her nomination hearing now. She's mentioned all the quality products she's helped develop in the Aerospace wing of Textron.

Yeah, good fucking luck Tucano, you're pretty fucked.
>>
>>34582656
>>34582569
That's kind of the point of these aircraft though, isn't it? A cheaper, sustainable attack aircraft for when ground fire is not as likely. Not to mention it's a sort of a moot point considering unguided fire is extremely unreliable, but guided fire will easily hit either
>>
>>34585430
MANPADs are always a threat though, and the Scorpion has a much higher service ceiling.
>>
>>34585447
And a much bigger and easier to lock IR signature.

>>
>>34585447
The service cieling of either aircraft is out of manpad range though
>>
>>34582049
Tucano + APKWS seems like the best COIN bang for your buck right now.
>>
>>34582533
Yeah, but to thibk anyone notices or cares is... well, >>34582096 is correct. Tell us how tired you are once someone points out your mistake, otherwise, get over yourself.

>oh hay guiz, i ment to say think, not thibk, I'm just really tired.
>>
>>34582656
>ground fire
the point of OA-X is that it flies at high enough altitude to be immune to light ground fire.
>>
It's probably gonna be the AT-6 or Scorpion

No way the congress will allow a foreign design flying on USAF warplanes. No matter how good it is.
>>
>>34580558

the radar is one of the requirements for the oa-x trials?
>>
>>34579989
All the parts are off the shelf, there's nothing to prove as far as that goes. It's consistently had availability above 95%.

It's got a higher flight hour cost, but it's still far less expensive than the F-16 or A-10. And higher range, speed, and especially payload would more than make up for the price difference. 6 hardpoints with a 2,800kg load and an internal bay with a 1,400kg load vs 5 hardpoints with a 1,500kg load is not an insignificant difference, especially since the Scorpion has 300km in range on the Tucano without external fuel and a hell of alot more with it. The Tucano has internal guns which would be nice as far as conserving armament goes if they weren't fucking .50s.
>>
>>34587073
Ellen Lord getting the nomination for AT&L also sorta seals it. No way in hell she's letting Embraer get shit. And her hearing went fine so she should get confirmed before the test in August.
>>
>>34582096
>>34586480
Are you OK, anon?
>>
>>34587190

The super tucano's .50s are handy for forcing down drug smuggling light aircraft, so I can understand why they are there, but yeah, pointless against ground. Even the 20mm cannon on most US aircraft isn't that useful against ground, hence the 25mm on the F-35 (and the harrier before it). You could probably fit a 25mm centerline gun pod to the scorpion on missions if you wanted a gun.
>>
>>34587448
They tested a 20mm on it recently, I don't think they'll go any bigger. The 20 is enough for interception purposes, for A2G it'll use precision munitions.
>>
>>34587448

Super Tucano can use a huge variety of weapons. Including 20mm guns.

OA-X is giant waste of money directed by baby boomer idiot John McCain. The perfect low cost ground attack plane is already in service and it's called the MQ-9 Reaper. If anything the 1 billion should be given to the Army to fund the pusher prop or tilt rotor attack helicopter
>>
>>34587586
All of these planes have a lower flight hour cost than the Reaper though.
>>
>>34587615
the US has enough money to use B-1B and B-52 as CAS aircraft. The difference between a Tucano and Reaper or even an F-35 means nothing to us. For a country like Colombia then yeah it would be super beneficial for the. But for the US this is going backwards. This program is too similar to the C-27J. It sounds good on paper but in reality its doctrine of use is easily covered by something else already in the US inventory.
>>
>>34587721
Have you missed the budget crisis the US has been undergoing since sequestration began? People like you going "We have enough money, fuck it." is how we got into this mess.

>>
>>34587745
The sequestration was 100% politics we were never short money. There is no issue with defense spending now that republicans control everything.
>>
>>34587745

>"We have enough money, fuck it."

[starts X-35 program]
>>
>>34587864
Enough Republicans still support it that it's still going on. The BCA will keep fucking us until 2021, and we have no idea who will be president and who will control congress at that time. It could be extended or replaced with something even worse.
>>
>>34587584
Get it through your dirty southy skull, the U.S. will not be buying huehue planes.
>>
>>34585745
You are forgetting cost of training pilots and cost of losing a pilot flying a less resilient aircraft

good lord that aircraft is ugly as all getout.

maybe only the moral cost because i don't think it's hard to train a pilot of a light attacker, consider that they fly cessna caravan with hellfires in iraq with like little to no training except the basic flight training

pic related btw, it's what america made iraq into

I don't see why they wouldn't go for ST since it's already built in US, is combat tesets and it's the cheapest of all.

FA-50 is the better jet.
>>
>>34579849
It's shit, would have been interesting if this was still the 90s but not now. The OA-X program will be cancelled at the last minute anyways in order to keep the A-10 fleet flying longer.

>>34582569
>more fragile design.

Props are actually more resilient, it's one of their draws. If anything the scorpion would be more susceptible to ground fire due to being hotter.

>>34582656
If the plane is flying 800m/kh then it will have shit on station time and will be useless.
>>
>>34587190
>It's consistently had availability above 95%
>number built: 2

Wow, it's fucking nothing. You are delusional if you think the scorpion is proven like the Tucano is.

>>34587962
Trump is desperate to improve relations with brazil and this would be a great way to accomplish that. Plus, it's based off of an American WW2 aircraft and trump is super nostalgic for older military equipment, so much so that he wanted our new aircraft carriers to go back to steam cats.
>>
So has anyone got a price per unit on a trainer model of the Scorpyongyang or is it too early to tell?
>>
>>34591360
that plane is just sexy as fuck even on the inside.
