.22 Squirrel is god tier. .20 Squirrel using the old .20 cal bullets that were just .22's squashed down to .20 was was Holocaust tier, but if you didn't hit the head there was nothing left to eat, and if you did hit the head it wasn't there anymore.

.17 Squirrel is tiny and requires a loli to actually reload.
>>
Easy, OP.
.22 LR for rimfire, .17 HMR is good too, but I like .22 LR.
.223 for a centerfire rifle.
12 gauge for walking around the ranch and blasting fucking squirrels.

Easy :)
>>
Obviously a flamethrower
>>
>>34579231
Does .17 HMR do less collateral damage than .22lr? My 53 year old dad told me he's getting a varmint rifle and I'm worried about ricochets. We have a pretty bad ground squirrel problem and most of them tend to hang out on this rock outcrop 200 feet away from my house.
>>
>>34579253
But seriously, i am planning on buying an ar-7
>>
>>34578858
Literally a particularly strong BB gun.
>>
>>34578858
I used to hunt squirrels for sustenance with a 20 gauge loaded with bird shot. It seems like overkill but it actually works really well. Shoot them while they're up a tree and the pellets only seem to break the skin but not enter the muscles. A .22lr obviously works pretty well but it causes some damage the meat and bones. I tried using a .177 pellet gun but it was hard to hit them and this one fucking squirrel I had to shoot like 18 times before it died. Little fucker was like a Terminator.
>>
>>34579307

.17 hmr has about twice the energy as a .22lr and I'm assuming the damage to the critter would be worse compared to a .22lrin terms of tissue destruction
>>
>>34579392
Good. Some of those fucking squirrels have survived for more than a day after getting hit with a .177 pellet gun.
>>
>>34578871
Not a bad choice. I took a groundhog between the eyes when he popped his head out of his hole at 100m with .308 last week.

The round didn't even tumble or cavitate. Just zipped straight through leaving the head (almost) completely intact.
>>
>>34579406

M8 a .17hmr produces 245 fpe which is like 10-15 times more than an air rifle

Also >not using .22 air guns for hunting
>>
>>34579412

That's amazing
>>
I've been killing squirrels for 2 decades and it's totally dependent on range and environment.

>urban close range (under 50y)
Suppressed .22 with subsonics or .22 cal airgun.
>rural 0-30y
12 or 20 ga turkey loads
>out to 150y
.22 LR,
>out to 250y
.17 hmr
>out to 400y
.204, .22-250
>past 400y
.243

Obviously there's a lot of overlap. My personal favorites are suppressed .204 and .22-250 shooting light Vmax and Vshok loads. The squirrels will literally fucking explode.
>>
>>34580061
>urban close range (under 50y)
>Suppressed .22 with subsonics

Thinking about getting this for my dad for chipmunk blasting in our suburban backyard. We're currently using a .17 pump air-rifle that is really starting to suck ass. I used to be able to drive nails with that fucker, but now it's deteriorated.
>>
>>34580136
Definitely get a bolt gun for that. Quieter and more reliable cycling with the weak subsonic loads.

My favourite squirrel hunting calibers are .22 and 12 gauge. One thing I do appreciate about the 12 gauge is there's never any suffering, but it is fairly hard on the body. I've also shot one with an SKS using FMJ's, I'd never do that again because it took three shots to actually kill it, I felt pretty bad.

One of my fondest squirrel hunting memories was watching my friend trying to shoot them with a commercial Chinese SKS, he would fire over ten rounds at them trying to hit them and he would deal with numerous malfunctions every time he tried. I would just sit back and watch in wonder, he never killed a single one with it despite trying probably eight times.

Pretty much, at least the lower powered versions. If you've got an air rifle putting .177" pellets out at around 800fps or higher then squirrels shouldn't be a problem, but most don't shoot that fast and will just make a little hole which the squirrel may or may not perceive as life ending. .22" at 700fps or hotter is a much more sure thing, so I guess .22" is the .45" of the airgun/squirrel world.

yes, .177 fucking sucks. I lent my .177 to my neighbor as he had a very serious Rat problem. Evidently his wife was putting out too much bird seed in their yard.

This dude is semi-retired, so he just sits around drinking coffee all day clutching this air rifle. Last I heard, he had "killed" 10 of em. He says everytime he shoots em, they let out a loud squeek, jump a foot in the air, and then run into a hole and spend the next 2 hours dying.

According to him, only 1 outright died on the spot, the other 9 took between 30 minutes and 6 hours to die.

For squirrels, I've taken hundreds with a 20 ga and #6 shot. Sometimes you'll see the bbs stuck in the skin, but that's from an odd angle. I regularly get chest/skull penetrations with said setup. Never lost one that I shot; aim for the head and pull the trigger.

I regularly hit minute of soda-pop can @ ~50 yards with a $100 Gamo air rifle. Like, every shot in a row.

Well unless they're really, really big rats, he's a crappy shot. Of the 75 rats (4 varieties, between young roof rats about 4oz to adult Norwegians about 2lbs) I shot with a .177" last year, only one needed a second shot. It was gasping, bleeding into its lungs, as I took a shot from an awkward left-handed angle in a rush and had to go for centre chest from the side. Normally I go for side of front of head shots and they just drop, or give a slight kick then drop. That's with a target pistol adapted as a small night vision carbine, delivering 6fpe at the muzzle. Not exactly powerful. Rats are just soft. But you have to hit the brain. Just aiming for the body somewhere is a surefire way to a long and painful death. I'm up to about 15 for this year, seems I culled the population fairly well last year, hardly hearing any whistling at night now.
>>
>>34600446
>I culled the population fairly well last year, hardly hearing any whistling at night now.

Do rat whistles sound like construction workers catcalls from the 80s?
>>
>>34600805
Nope. Guess you haven't hunted rats. It's a very short, high pitched whistle, which if you weren't aware of the source would most likely sound like finches or chickadees at their quietest. But on a quiet night the whistles carry quite far, at least half a block, and though they're infrequent (unless they're stressed and warning each other) they can be used to approximately locate a rat. But you didn't want actual facts, right? Just a little chuckle.

>Nope. Guess you haven't hunted rats.

Never. Used to own some. They make cool pets. Never heard them whistle. I'd hunt them if they were a problem here though.

Seems to be a 'checking in' sort of sound. Usually around C or C# 3 octaves above middle C. I don't think they're actually whistling, more of a compressed throat sort of sound, singing. They're letting each other know who's around, and when one goes down there's often a few of these high pitched noises in quick succession, then nothing for some minutes.

I think rats are amazing creatures. If they'd just piss off and do their own thing without messing up my stuff I'd be happy to let them be. But getting into the walls and ceilings, peeing and shitting in the insulation, nibbling wires... all the stuff squirrels do as well, it's just not acceptable. From what I've seen they're highly intelligent and learn rapidly, seemingly warning each other about my yard. Which is great. The fewer I have to shoot the happier I am. Disposing of dead critters is something I always find depressing.

A cat keeps shitting in my garden. What's the best economical choice to take it out? Is 20mm okay or should I go bigger?
>>
>>34606519
A hose works. Blast it with water, every time you see it. Cats can learn.
>>
>>34606519
Bigger
Bofors 40mm is the only answer.

OP, pic related. Benjamin Marauder... .22 PCP

Accurate as fuck with power to spare.

My season total is currently 44 fox squirrels.

My current record is 3 kills (all head shots) within ~20 seconds. All 3 shots were unsupported at 30-40 yards. It was pretty fucking spectacular.

Pic related... (4th was killed in a separate encounter)

I've popped a tree nigger with some shitty break action .177 from Walmart. I didn't even think I'd hit him; it was such a piece of shit. Must have actually hit something vital, because he dropped immediately. Died just after I finished walking out.

That said, the .22 air guns are way better.

For a shot-gun. And if you're spotting squirrels from 300-400 yards, I hate you and want your eyeballs.

My CZ 455 Lux in .22lr works pretty well. I tried using my K-31 once and whilst it was a very humane kill, it made a fucking stinking mess of burst intestines as it shredded the lil fucker in half.

I have full permission from the land owner of the private range to which I belong, to wage total Jihad on these electrical wire munching bastards.

The first week of leafless trees is the best time to strike, especially if there's a blanket of snow on the ground. The stupid tree rats don't realize they have no cover and the snow lets you find your kills pretty quick.

.22-250 is a poor man's .220-swift.

Whatever you do, do not use napalm shotgun shells, we had one accident already, i dont want another anon to have an accident as well.

.700 Nitro Express

Phase the squirrel from existence. It is not more, and now it never was.

Nigger do you have perfect pitch or did you jump on a piano and find the note?

>they don't realize that .204 Ruger has better BC than both .22-250 and .220 Swift with less blast and less recoil

I love .22-250 but since getting a .204 I hardly ever use it.
>>
.177 will get it done if you are close and are a decent shot. This is in Florida though and our squirrels are tiny.
>>
>>34609783
unfortunately the video never made it out on the internet afaik
>>
>>34615137
That all depends on load. I don't have any BC data for any weight .224 or .20 bullets in front of me, but I'd imagine it was a tiny difference.
>>
>>34579353
Were you a hobo at some point?

Honestly just a simple pellet gun. Me and my friends went a little overboard and no there's no squirrels in our neighborhood

>Me and my friends went a little overboard and no there's no squirrels in our neighborhood

I used a .22 and pellet gun for a few years and they all vanished for a while. It was great. Then I hear a noise in the attic, and there's fuckin 4 of them up there. Even when you think you've won the battle, the things still find a way.
I'm now covering my roof-overhang area with thin metal sheets, and I still think I'll be dealing with them this fall. I may need to do this >>34582990
>>
>>34615817
With a shotgun.

Not quite perfect pitch. I'm often a semitone flat when I go to check against a tuner or instrument.

AR15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel
>>
>>34615518
You're right. I love both rounds. I just tend towards .204 for higher volume shooting because of the slight reduction in recoil and muzzle blast.

They're both better than .223 btw
>>
>>34616522
That's still impressive
>>
Shoot the first one with a blunderbuss, load it's corpse into the blunderbuss and fire it at the next one.

It's a practice thing. I'm in music-related stuff professionally and try to remember what an A sounds like daily, for decades now.
