almost done cleaning the type 38 i bought. whoever said use a wire brush last thread i love you. that made it so much faster.
theres a few screws chewed up and some hairline cracks near the wrist that werent mentioned or shown in the pictures but i dont think its anything to worry about. the magazine latch seems stuck in place, couldnt hurt to spray some wd40 on there right?

I prefer the original schmidt rubin action on the 96/11, G11, and K11. However, the K31 has a better trigger. The 1911 pattern guns still have good triggers though.

Sights on the K31 are also a little better for most common shooting distances.

LGS has a Longbranch No4 that's afaik matching and extremely clean, but with a very dark stock. The price is $499 but it's not really negotiable since it's on consignment by a customer to pay off another gun. I'm extremely tempted because NA Enfield, but the price is a bit much. Wat do?

Another lgs has an 03A3 for $500 problem is it needs a follower, magazine spring and an end cap for the handguard. The bolt is smooth and it looks to be in good shape, but the stock has few or no markings and the bore is dark but serviceable. Would it be worth it to buy the replacement parts for it and buy it as is, or try and talk him down a bit? I didn't give it a very thorough inspection last time I was in tje store and would have to reevaluate it before putting any money on it

Thoughts on buying stuff off Amazon? I have Prime and want to buy some stripper clips and a sling for my Mosin, it just seems like the most efficient way.

The three variants you're going to see by far the most of ar the No. 1 Mk III, the No. 4 Mk 1 and the No. 5 Mk 1.

The No. 1 dates through WW1 to the beginning of WW2 (later in places like Australia that didn't switch to No. 4s.

The No. 4 started in early WW2 and continued through the war.

The No. 5 is a carbine variant made in relatively small numbers.

The No. 1 looks the best (you can disagree, but that just means you're wrong) and it has the blunt nosecap. The No. 4 looks more "normal" with the barrel protruding and the carbine usually has a flash hider.

Found a Type 38 in a pawn shop, rusted to hell but doesnt look too bad besides that. Only problem is I think its a trainer? Markings read 文三月歳 as far as I can tell.
I've never seen a Type 38 with the first character before, any idea what it means?

What should I get next?
I've got a Garand, M1 Carbine, M1903A3, M1917 and a 1891 Carcano long rifle.
I was thinking getting some sort of Mauser. Or something more unusual. There are a couple of M24/47s and a Brazilian 1908 short rifles near me.

Do the numbers match? If it was Tokyo Arsenal it would be matched by an assembly number rather than the serial number. The bolt body, cocking piece, extractor, dust cover, rear sight elevator, floorplate and bayonet lug are the only places it can be seen without taking the rifle apart. Check to see if they match each other; chances are if they do then they match the receiver number too.

My rifle's bolt doesn't match, but the bayonet lug and sight number do, as does the stock and handguard.

Let me put it differently:

Learning the fundamentals and becoming skilled at all with shooting, by starting off with milsurp, is like learning to throw a basketball by starting at the three point line.

You'd be playing on hard mode, not to mention using expensive ammo AND using a rifle that may not group well anyway. A decent .22LR will group well, and will be an awesome confidence builder.

DO NOT start with milsurp as your first rifle to learn to shoot with, unless you never plan to shoot all that well.
