Hey /k/ I'm planning to get into recreational shooting, so I plan to build an AR cuz its cheaper than a pre-built. So where do I start?
>>
>>34573796
By buying a prebuilt Ruger ar556
>>
>>34573796
Bump
>>
>>34573796
so you already have a mill or a drill press and a trim router?
>>
>>34573796
>So where do I start?
by reading the fucking sticky, jackass
>>
>>34573796
Buy a lower and a psa build kit.
>>
>>34573796
Prices of ar15s in general have come down, meaning it'll be about the same price buying new as building a low end kit. Dpms, m&p etc are all well within the price range of building. If youre building now, make sure its because 1) you want the experience, 2) you want yo customize it a bit more or 3) you want to spread the cost out. If not, a dpms, m&p16, ar556 and the like are the same, if not cheaper and quicker
>>
>>34573995
oh or you just want a cheap one rather than to make your own.

something like this, you can maybe save a little money buying parts separately on sale

>>
Build the complate lower, buy a complete upper, buy a sling , light, and optic, done.

You can build a lower with chanel lock pliers and a screwdriver, it's stupid easy with the internets . Fuck building an upper

Market's flooded with AR-platforms after the Sandy Hook and Orlando-Pulse scares. It'll probably be cheaper to buy a premade AR outright - DI only, of course.

Unless, of course, you're a hobby enthusiast, looking to further hone your skillsets. Be advised: If you're looking to mill-out your own eighty percent receiver, the jigs (optional but damned useful) and drill/mill bits will add to your expenses, and - if unchecked - you'll discover really 'effing FAST just how quickly you'll find yourself "upside-down" on the project.

Therefore, you can save yourself a bit of aggravation by purchasing a stripped lower, but - as BATFE classifies a stripped lower, as a "firearm" (despite the fact the damn piece is an 'effing skeletal chunk of milled metal) - you will have to complete and pass the mandatory 4473, clearing the transfer with your local, willing FFL, if s/he doesn't already have stripped lowers for sale.

Things to consider, seriously.
>>
>>34573796
Why do you guys trash OPs who post genuine discussion threads about weapons? Do you really want more cancer here like GWG threads, and F35 hate threads?
>>
>>34574013
I second this. Have done it multiple times myself with excellent results. Substitute the lower for 80% lower if you want to really make it yours, but that requires some tools (vise, router, jig, drill)
>>
>>34574145
Can't say for other threads, but I myself am not trashing 'em outright. I'm just trying to enlighten OP to the greater cost-benefit analysis of DIY builds - duly true, if s/he we're to botch the milling, via the eighty-percent route.

...F35's still a giant turkey, though.

>>
>>34574013
Just did this, got everything but the lower receiver in the mail today.
>>
>>34573796
>>34573841
i was going to say this. the ruger is crazy cheap (like $400) and youre getting a lot for your money. assembling from parts makes sense if youre going absolute budget build (with used parts), clone, or more importantly, getting the exact components you want.
you still can build a super cheap rifle from all new AR parts, but the ruger is the better value for sure, even if it uses some non standard parts. a factory rifle has better resale value and a warranty.
>>
>>34574018
Complete fucking rookie here. The top link you posted does not require any milling, just assembly, correct?
>>
>>34574588
yes, only an 80% receiver would need work done to it, the second link there is a complete stripped lower you'd just need to put springs, parts and pins in.
>>
>>34574588
>>34574628
but for $20 more you could have a pretty good rifle with a lifetime warranty
>>34574516
>>
>>34574568
I bought my Ruger AR556 back in '13 as my first AR and its still my favorite to this day. Solid choice for the price.
>>
>>34574568
Everywhere I'm looking I see 6-7, where are you seeing it for 4?
>>
>>34574794
First place I looked.

>>34574794
psa has them for $450 but it looks like theyre sold out.
i was actually tempered to get the ruger when it was on sale just to put away.
>>
>>34574516
Neat!

Be sure to invest in duct tape.
>>
>>34574516
So let's say I go for this, what's a decent sight or optic to pair with this that's not spending too much in comparison to the rifle.
>>
>>34575296
i don't know that much about optics, but primary red dots are pretty good value
https://gun.deals/product/primary-arms-micro-red-dot-sight-7694-w-coupon-triple15-and-opt-out-free-returns?view=list

the lowest you could spend would be around $30, one of these
https://wisearms.com/collections/ar-15/products/utg-1x30-red-dot-sight
or removable iron sights

there is a thread up about optics
>>34553924
>>
>>34573796
Buy a palmetto kit, get a high quality (faxon black hole ect) barrel throw out old barrel. It's not Gucci but the money is where it counts.
>>
>>34575460
Thanks
>>
>>34575708
Also look at a Bushnell trs25 or holosun. They're the definitive poorfag optics
>>
>>34573796

Wait a few more months. Pre built is just going down more and more in price.

Building your own is nice, allows you to get a better understanding of the gun too.
>>
Where may 20" A1 style (pencil) barrels be found?
I browsed an entire gun show yesterday and found gov't profile, bull, and fluted barrels. 98% were 16".
Obviously that;s popular, but I want what I want. My google fu isn't up to the task.
