Why was it the best cold war era fighter jet?
>>34565266
cause its a cute
>>34565266
It was a very good interceptor but it wasn't a better fighter than its big brother.
>>34565266
He's very handsome in an exotic sort of way. Probably my favorite European fighter from an aesthetic point of view
Saab didnt even make their own engines for their jets. And they sucked
>>34565441
Nope, but volvo did. Do you know of any other digital planes of its era? Are you even a fighter jet if you don't have a central computer?
>>34565507
>Saab plane first to have a central computer
The jokes really write themselves
Didnt it get radar lock on an SR71?
>>34565611
The JA37 did
>with a lot of help
>>34565611
That'd be Viggen.
>>34565266
f35
>>34565599
As a matter of fact yes, CK37 was the first airborne IC central computer.
>>34565650
That'd be Denmark.
>>34565703
>the joke
>your head
SAAB liked to jam all sorts of bleeding edge whatzits and electronics into It's cars before anyone else did. These tended to be problematic down the road but left the company with an impressive list of firsts
>>34565795
>>34565822
>>34565332
>>34565350
Patrician taste, my fellow anons
The Viggen truly is the most criminally underrated jet of the cold war
I only ever learned about it after Leatherneck announced it for DCS, then I fell in love...
>>34565266
best looking but far from the best. its missile capability was piss poor
but Damn it its pretty
>>34565831
>>34565396
>He
Jets are almost always female, faggot
>>34565863
>>34565831
heres a rare draken
>>34565846
Here comes the Viggen
OP here.
Here's me in the glorious cockpit, just before take off.
>>34565937
>>34565951
>>34565962
a bit earlier design than the draken but since we are on the topic of swedish planes

Really makes you think
>>34566082
And ayys
>>34566082
Indeed.
>>34565266
sweden truly had massive armed forces,
what happend? :(
>>34565976
not sure what plane this is actually
>>34566140
Hunter.
>>34566120
1000 fighters
>>34566147
Different job same thing.
>>34566120
End of cold war and pointless and unwarranted optimism.
>>34565864
It's swedish
>>34565266
Wrong
>>34566140
I think im scratching the bottom of the barrel now
Lansen was a thing.
>>34566289
Not sure if these still are.
We'll take the threat in another, more terrestrial direction. why was this, and why is it still, the best tank ever designed?
>>34565266
HE OWNS A TRUCK
BUT HE
BUT HE DRIVES A SAAB
>>34566082
More of an AT-6 killer in practice.
>>34566120
Two things I'd say.
The truly massive armed forces may only have been possible thanks the the economic boost we got from not having been bombed out in WW2.
Then once we had cut back form that to a more normal size, the end of the Cold War came about the same time as a large domestic economic crisis. With the invasion defence suddenly appearing largely useless, and huge budget cuts being necessary all around...
Of course, some lessons from WW2 may also have ended up forgotten forty to fifty years later.
>>34566302
Seriously want. I can legally DD that.
>>34566297
It's to be replaced in 2020.
>>34565864
>implying most fighterjets don't look incredibly masculine
Have you ever looked at a f-15 or a mig 25?
>>34566397
Lord Flasheart: No, I mean get inside her five times a day and take her to heaven and back.
>>34566120
(((they)))
>>34566254
>>34566440
DC-3 derivatives don't seem to hold up all that well against Migs I'm afraid.
>>34566432
"Always treat your kite *clack* like you treat your woman *whip*."
>>34565976
What tanks are those?
>>34567065
they are strv m/42's (ww2 swedish medium tank design)
>>34567771
Cute as fuck.
>>34566120
Post cold war optimistic nativity, same as everyone else
>Ywn cruise around the sky, in an open cockpit jet fighter
Why live.
>>34572546
>>34565744
>that sinking feeling when you realize you'll never again see them ripping over the skies of the kingdom in low-level passes during a summer exercize
The weight of those childhood memories are almost enough to break the heart.
>>34572549
>>34572551
Two of them still flies tho, so you can see them at airshows.
>>34572558
Did the Swedes ever experiment with setting up the Viggen with a FBW system?
>>34573960
As they supposedly had a lot of problems getting that to work with Gripen, I suspect they didn't have any prior experience with it. And once Gripen was in place Viggen's days were numbered, doesn't seem like it'd be worth the effort at that point.
>>34573960
Yes. Viggen 37-22 was set up with a FBW system as a testbed for future aircraft in 1982.
>>34565266
Sweden Yes!
>>34565939
Too bad that one's been more or less dismantled by kids for two decades. I remember it looking a lot nicer when I was 6 than it does now.
Also: lilldraken a cute
>>34565976
The J1 could mount this hilarious dakka-pod.
J21*
>>34565649
oh i KNOW where you'been.
>>34575497
theres like 6 of them decaying in the ground close to where i work. I always thought it was a sad sight...
>>34566120
we're coming around to reality. i'm just hoping it isn't too late.
Swedish jets and tanks looks so fucking retarded.
I like this thread
>>34566302
I still don't understand why they just didn't use a swiveling gun on top of their weird hydraulic tank aiming mechanism.
>>34565266
>so good it never did anything of note and only saw service in small numbers with Sweden and 3 literally who countries
Lol Sven plz. Just stick to shitposting the gripen in f35 threads.
>>34574207
Cool, thanks! A lot of other 3.5+ generation fighter jets were tested with FBW IIRC
>>34577053
Well they certainly weren't known for crashing and having fleet grounding issues. Ahem. Many aircraft from many 'leading' nations
Thicc
>>34566397
It's traditional to refer to vehicles and machinery in the feminine.
>>34578238

Our main objective with having a defence force is to stay out of war. We havent been in war for 200 years, so I think it did its job.
>>34579522
A USAF pilot and veteran from the Korea War stated that it was superior to both their Sabres and the MiG-15 when he got to testfly one
>>34582141
>did its job
More like Sw*den has nothing of value worth invading over and next to no presence on the world stage.
>>34582313
But they still have everything they looted back on their tour across the Europe.
>>34582313
>More like Sw*den has nothing of value worth invading over and next to no presence on the world stage
.t vatnik
While Sweden don't have oil, there is Gotland of strategic importance and the fact that Sweden has told russia to go fuck itself on numerous occasions.
Russians themselves being subhuman scum holds an innate hatred for all things beautiful and good, Swedes being pure aryans fill the russians with a rage only felt by the inferior beholding perfection they can never achieve.
That is why Sweden had to have a strong military, to hold the hateful hords of eastern subhuman scum at bay.
>>34574938
From back in the days when you could utter that unironically and they were good neighbours with decent bantz.
>>34566120
Sweden's shift toward socialist policies stagnated the economy for 40 years. There wasn't a net increase in jobs for almost the entire cold war as a result. Even if they didn't change culturally they still would have been forced to reduce their military regardless.
>>34578310
That's a beefy gear.
>>34582430
That's an incredible oversimplification. Sweden shifted its economy from an exporting and production economy to a service economy, fully integrated women into the workplace as well as mandated as well as legislating an unemployment rate to keep inflation down. That rate is 6%, and the current unemployment rate is... 6.6% (season adjusted).
>>34582313
Well we do have one of the highest livingstandard in the world.
And no, we dont feel the need to go around the world invading third world countries all the time.
