308 vs 30-06 for a hunting rife. What would you choose? Also, looking for advice on a gun. I was looking at the Ruger American, it seems like a good entry level rifle. But something about a nice wood stock gets me going, so I've been looking at the new Winchester Model 70s as well. Maybe I'll get something cheaper, and buy a higher quality one later on. Any advice is appreciated.

.30-06 is superior for hunting where chamberings are offered anywhere from 55 gr. Accelerators to .220 gr lower-magnum-tier loads. The case capacity and strength of the rifles allows for some crazy hot loads that .308 can't deliver.

Also, anything that is not a CZ550 FS or Tikka T3 is a sin.

Sniper Rifle, 30-06.
>>
>>34541726
It depends on what I'm hunting. If it's just deer then .308 is great. If it's elk or moose or something, pick a hotter 30-06.

Here is a Sako
Your point is invalid

>>34541726
get a tikka t3 and put a laminate boyds stock on it, best of both worlds. and i'd go with .308 unless ur hunting something really big

Tell me about the Tikka. Why are they so good?

Ugly mannlicher stock with that stupid looking foreskin

It's literally the smoothest bolt on the market though.
>>

>>34541771
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the particular stock. But I liked a lot of the other Sakos. How do they compare with the Tikkas?
>>
>>34541820
tikka is owned by sako and they are built on sako barrels and actions
>>
>>34541820
Seeing as tikka is made in same factory as sako and its sako's lower end offering, I am gonna guess the stock and details of the rifle is many times better?
>>
>>34541726
This:>>34541751

You can load it down with light bullets for varmint hunting and load it all the way up for moose and bear.

.308 is great for game too, it just can't go nearly as thumpy as .30-06.
>>
IMO, Savage makes the best bang for your buck. Great accuracy right out of the box
>>
>>34541842
But .30-06 cant really 'thumpy' either.
>>
>>34541799
Was thinking about getting a t3x hunter. Went and held one today and the wood felt like cheap plastic. Very disappointing
>>
>>34541983
Really? That's a shame. How much more are the Sakos?
>>
>>34541983
Yeah i'm sure the fucking deer will notice.
>>
Opinions on Wheatherby or Winchester?
>>
>>34541873
220 to 250 grains at 2200fps+ isn't thumpy?

I mean I guess you could go .45/70 or 458 win or 458 Lott and use some monster loads, but we're talking relatively here.
>>
>>34541859
Recently picked up a Savage Trophy in .308 with Nikon scope that has the BDC. Taking it to the range this weekend for the first time.
>>
>>34542012
I'll notice when my mosin ANFD 10/22 feel like they has better wood than an 800 dollar rifle (which feels like plastic). I'm getting the 550fs instead. Support Czech Rebuplics attempts at preventing the islamization of the west.

Going today tomorrow to go test one out. Have been hearing great reviews, and mannlicher is pure sex. If the wood feels like wood in getting it on the spot
>>
>>34542399
I give up phoneposting. I see why phoneposters are fags.
>>
>>34541726
If this rifle is ONLY for hunting and I have zero plans to do anything else with it, 30-06. There's more options for beefier loadings.
If I have any plinking plans, 308, because it'll still be fine and I can find anything from 30c/r tulammo to the best hunting loads available.
>>
does anyone know which rifle and scope putin uses
>>
>>34541726
Go with .30-06. .308 is great for deer and other game of similar size, but you might want a little more for larger game. .30-06 can, has, and will do both. Then, buy a .308 just for the hell of it, because you can't ever have enough guns.
>>
>>34542431
What about using 175gr .308 for Elk? Mainly using my .308 for deer using 150gr but was wondering if the 175gr would work if i went out west.
>>
>>34541726
How is this not a sticky by now?

As for the answer, it comes down to one question:
>Do you handload?
If you do, get .30-06 as the extra capacity allows you to push bullets faster than .308 could in a bolt gun. If you don't handload, go with .308 as the ammo is cheaper (in general) and factory ammo for both is comparable.
>>
>>34542047
Model 70 is great. XPR is basically a Miroku made Tikka T3. Weatherby Vanguard is a rebranded Howa 1500. Weatherby Mk V has a funky locking lug setup and still made by the nips and is 3x the cost of the others.
>>
>>34542421
Sauer & Sohn 303 Classik. At one time he was using a Zeiss of some form but that one's not it.
>>
>>34542472
I've killed 2 elk with 165gr Nosler BTs in .308. They did fine.

Lots of people think elk are these enormous armored things. They're not, they're big deer. Lots of people kill them with things like .25-06, 7mm-08, and .30-30.
>>
>>34542497
How do the new production Model 70s compare to the old ones?
>>
>>34542563
Thanks. I figure as long as i keep the shot under 200yds there shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>34542575
The post 2007 ones are back to controlled round feed. Accuracy is excellent, my featherweight .300wm prints 0.85-0.90 inch 5 shot groups with factory (Hornady American Whitetail) hunting loads.

Trigger is crisp with zero creep and no overtravel but heavy. Can't get mine under 2lbs 10oz and came from the factory at 3lbs 7oz (it's user adjustable supposedly from 5.5 to 2.5lbs). Hoping it will wear in, but this is not a rifle I'll shoot a lot due to being a 6.5lb .300wm.
>>
>>34542634
What's the difference between the Sporter and the Featherweight?
>>
I got the Ruger American Predator in 308, it's solid fantastic. Cannot reccomend enough. I got mine for $400 out the door tax and everything

>>
>>34541726

.338 win mag.
>>
>>34542682
>wood grade
Which wood is better?
>>
>>34542754
The featherweight is tiger maple. It has more evident figure and is lighter due to being less dense than walnut, but that also makes it more ding/dent/scratch prone and it's not as expensive as good walnut. Both are press checkered. The featherweight is a high gloss multi coat rubbed oil finish, the hunter is a satin rubbed oil finish.

I would say it's a matter of preference. I like the blonde color and it's pretty, some prefer the deep red of oil rubbed walnut.

Not sure how well this pic will show the difference. Top rifle is a new mod 70 featherweight. Bottom rifle is an XPR sporter, but the same style of wood and finish found on the mod70 sporter.

I took a moose with a single .308.

Shot placement is king
>>
So after reading this thread I googled Tikka t3x, goddamn those are some nice rifles. Which model should I go for? The artic looks nice
>>
>>34545786
You should get a CZ 550
>>
>>34546774
Are they cheaper or something?
>>
Get the parent cartridge of the .30-06.
>>
>>34543899

high shoulder shot. every time I get one they just drop.

I've also never had any runnners with a neck shot. I think the pressure knocks them out. once I hit a deer with my car and used a .40s&w to put it out of its misery in some guy's front yard. two shots to the chest and it just kept trying to get up. One neck shot and it went stiff instantly. didn't hit the spine on that one (I ate that sonofa bitch. his rack messed up my hood.

If I go for a vitals shot like in archery they'll run between 30 and a hundred yards before they so much as stop running.

the second I get to use my .223 this fall that's what I'm going to do. I've never had anything but a dead drop with.243, .308, .30-06 and .270 doing a high shoulder shot so far.

you get the same?
>>
>>34547228

they don't make rifles for that anymore as far as I'm aware, and I bet you'd be hard pressed to find ammo.
>>
>>34547394
I forgot about the -03. I meant the 7x57.
>>
>>34547436

7x 57 wasn't the parent case of the 03 or the 01. You're dumb.
>>
>>34547583
Oh then what was?
>>
>>34547600
there wasn't one. the .30-01 was a new, unique cartridge developed to MIMIC the fucking mauser and succeed the .30-40 krag, and so had no parent cartridge.
>>
>>34541751
>not mentioning pre/post Winchester model 70
Wew lad
>>
>>34543899
No doubt you could. I've never hunted anything that big so I probably wouldn't try it for my first time though.
>>
>>34546774
they are just really well made , reliable rifles
