Turning 19 soon and I want to get my dick wet with a bolt action. Any good bolt gats out there I should consider or is the Mosin really the only way to go? Also post your rifles if you have them
>>
>>34539852
Mosins have gotten pricey Anon. Plus the bolt is kinda trash. If you want a military rifle, and money for ammo isn't an issue, big 5 usually has old yugo mausers stocked. Bolt is better than Mosins and they are generally better put together. Can't help ya if you want something modern though sorry. Although Remington 600's and 660's are pretty fun.
>>
>>34539852
At this point, just get a Mauser. 7.62x54r prices are going up (like 40 CPR on average now) and they currently cost the same as Mausers.
>>
>>34539922
I heard Mausers are all over priced though
>>
>>34539852
only bolt actions worth buying are sniper rifles and .22lr
babby should start with a babby gun first until he gits good at plinking. .22s are always useful
>>
>>34539852
surplus isn't what it used to be, the appeal (other than historic value) was that they were cheap and everywhere, but now they're drying up quick. modern bolt action rifles are cheaper and you're getting a brand new rifle.
Of course, I'm not gonna tell you not to get a surp rifle if it's what you really want. Mosins are pretty common, but it'd be worth it to check what your local gunstores have or what people are selling on armslist in your area.
>>
Milsurp is bad for beginners. Get a Savage Axis or Stevens 200 or a 22 of some kind.
>>
No, the Mosins are an old meme and only worth getting when they were $80-$180 at the most.

Enfields, Mausers (all variants), etc are fantastic. I bought a J&P Sauer & Sohn 1940 RC Mauser for $250 with ammo a few months ago.

Or buy a Savage.
>>
>>34539938
Historic value is definitely a reason for me wanting a surp rifle, and there are still somewhat cheap mosins where I live. Not that I was specifically looking to get one
>>
>>34539929
Can still find them for around $300 on the internet and a bit more at big 5 if you want to buy at a brick and mortar store.
>>
>>34539972
I'll be sure to definitely look at that, a Mauser or an Enfield would be a dream
>>
>>34539934
Any .22 rifles I should look at?
>>
>>34539978
Spanish 7mm Mausers are still $180 at J&G. Genuine Spanish Civil War veterans. They're in worn shape cospetically, but mechanically they're fine: http://www.jgsales.com/spanish-1916-mauser-bolt-action-short-rifle,-7x57,-good,-used.-p-80642.html

Marlin 1894 in 44 mag or a ruger American in 308

I bought mine for $190 cash at a Gun Show. So I actually got to see what condition mine was in before I got mine. So I would say check your local shops or gun shows.

Otherwise risk the lotto online, at least with online buys people will throw in surplus gear.
I only got the gun + bayonet, and am buying the gear extra...
>>
>>34539852
Probably just joining the chorus. I own a Mosin and I love it (irrationally, the trigger is shit). It is a very nice rifle for what it is, but you should probably only pick it up if you are interested in the history / milsurp. If not, I would recommend a nice bolt action .22 if that is the way you are going. I can't suggest one to get, but you might try looking at acadamy's website, J&G sales, ect. to find a rifle that speaks to you. Remember that everyone's advice is just a suggestion, and you need to find the gun that you feel happy with. (For that I can't help but reccomend going into a gun store and trying out the rifle before you buy).
>>
>>34539978
Same anon as
>>34539899 and >>34539972
I have a couple enfields and a few different mauser variants as well as a boatload of mosins, honestly, I would say go for a mauser variant, as they are usually the cheapest and best rifle you can find for the price if you want surplus. Enfields can run about 450 for ones in good shape. I think my favorite bolt gun I own is my frankensaka. Rebuilt an old type 9o arasaka with a shot out barrel, put a 7x57 barrel on, slapped a mannlicher stock on it, and put some weaver sights from one of my grandpa's part box on it. Thing will shoot sub 1 moa, but only takes spitzer rounds. Jams up on round nose.
>>
>>34539852
Mausers, k31's, 1917's, it really just depends on your budget.
>>
>>34539852
Going to go ahead and recommend an M96 Swedish Mauser if you really want milsurp. They're all generally in good condition, shoot the very tame 6.5x55 cartridge, and are known for their accuracy. Ammo is widely available online as it is a popular hunting cartridge in Europe and has a good following in the States.

>buy a gun in a caliber a 19 year old can't legally buy
Nice idea big boy
>>
>>34540133
Seconding this, I own a sporterized M94. Haven't tried reloading yet but 6.5x55 is apparently great for it. Like >>34540057 said I'm a /his/tory nerd so I'm buying a mosin online for like $220-230 something. I love anything with cheap ammo.

If you're looking for something expendable yet functional go mosin, if you're looking for something slightly less expendable and slightly more functional go enfield/mauser
>if you're new (you are) don't go milsurp at all, buy either a .22/intermediate bolt gun OR something like a Ruger American, Savage Axis etc
>>
>>34540366
You can legally buy any caliber retard, you can't buy a handgun though

Is a fucking .22 rifle illegal because they make .22 pistols? Fucking idiot
>>
>>34540366

It's literally illegal at a federal level to buy pistol ammo under 21. I believe .44 Mag would count as a pistol cartridge
>>
>>34540453
That's not true at all
Why the fuck would they make buying ammo that can be used in pistols AND rifles illegal when they already made the pistols themselves illegal?

Sorry it's illegal to sell pistol ammo to someone under 21. Also the law is somewhat vague.

You must be 21 years or older to order ammunition. Ammo must ship UPS ground. Due to Department of Transportation regulations, we cannot accept returns on ammo. Please check local laws before ordering.

They don't ask for an ID scan, sperg. They don't look up your name in an age database, and neither does anyone along the way. You could also just put your dad's name on the package, since you live with him.
>>
My first bolt action was when I was 19. I bought myself a Savage Axis 2 in .270

I loved it and still do
>>
Not OP but should I save up for a M1903 or just go for a beater Mauser (and maybe grab a SKS with the leftover money) as my first bolt rifle?
>>
>>34539852
You could get a brand new durr rifle for the same price that Mosins go for these days.

https://www.impactguns.com/savage-axis-rifle-243-black-22in-19222-011356192226.aspx
http://grabagun.com/mossberg-patriot-243win-bl-syn-22-5-1.html

They're available in other calibers, it's just that the .243 versions seem to be the cheapest (perhaps the least desirable deer caliber?). I recently ordered a Mossberg Patriot in .300 Win Mag, which cost around $400 because it's a model with iron sights, and I feel like I got a good deal. I've owned Mosins in the past and even if you can get one for $200 today, they are kind of shitty guns (the magazine on mine would spontaneously pop open while firing) and you get them in really beat up condition (rough bores, mixed serial numbers and fucked up hardware are common). I'd rather have the new manufactured rifle that comes ready-to-go for scope mounting and comes with a warranty if anything goes wrong.
>>
>>34539852
i bought a mossburg 342 recently. it's a mag-fed bolt action 22. it's fun as fuck, and i would recommend one. obviously it's not as powerful as a nugget, but it's still a great gun.
>>
>>34540583
This
I bought an Axis 2 in .30-06 when I was fresh out of high-school. Easily the only new gun I've bought that was actually worth the price I paid. Although .30-06 is a lot of cartridge for a smaller and lighter rifle like the axis
>>
Cz 527 in 7.62x39

It feels like a child's 22. Amazingly light and handy. I can also consistently punch one ragged hole at 50 yards with mine using tulammo

Forget milsurp for now. Come back to it when you have a deeper knowledge of guns and more money to burn

The Ruger American in .223 is objectively the best "I want a bolt action as my first gun" choice you can make.

it's what I started out on. The bolt is smooth as fuck, the trigger is decent (not great, but decent), ammo is cheap and plentiful so you will get plenty of trigger time, it's got enough of a kick that you know you are shooting a rifle, but not enough to give you a flinch, and when you inevitably buy an AR you can share ammo.

I sold mine when I moved to a city but I will definitely buy one again when I move out into the country.

Southern Ohio Gun has some Yugo Mausers in stock. Infinitely better than a nugget for not a whole lot more.
