Let look at civilian aircraft that can be used for /k/'a air force or be used by the .mil

My pick is the piper jet and Diamond jet

The piper would be a good choice for ground missions and maybe a surveillance craft

The diamond jet would be great for just a guns only craft with either dual or single point mounted Dillon aero Gatling guns with the ammo magazine being able to easily be pulled out by making it removable by fork truck from the side of the fuselage

What do y'all think would make good makeshift defense craft

Aerolite 103 and a PKM.

O-planes should be low and slow with a high wing and lots of cockpit glazing.

Pretty much any civillian aircraft that already has served
>Piper Cub
>Cessna 172
>Cessna Skymaster
>MD-500

Truthfully most civil aircraft could serve limited use in combat, but it depends what kind of conflict it is. Also, many ex-military aircraft are owned privately so you could theoretically just use an L-39, MiG-21, MiG-15, etc if you had the funds.
>>
Though having some hardpoints for bombs or gun pods is nice too.
>>
>>34537896
You're right there's actually a kit craft that would be perfect but sadly it has very small tanks....drop tanks maybe?

I've seen that one yes but there were 2 others in good shape and with some intervals and an engine but was only 2mil
>>

I mean some of them did have bazookas strapped to them.
>>
>>34537937

Possibly. Though it's still possible to find Piper Cubs and similar light aircraft from the golden age of civil aviation tucked away in barns and hangars for a grand or three.
>>
>>34538016
Maybe rotted away. Piper cubs have severely shot up in price, however they are falling back down since the market is declining.

>Civilian aircraft

Well technically those two SU-25K in the FAA registry are owned by a civilian. Does that count?

Well I live in Lock Haven PA, so YMMV but I could go a buy a Cub in flying condition for ~$3500 or a disassembled barn-find for ~$1000.

I wish that was the case here.
I love classic cubs but everyone in TX wants a fortune for them.

When it comes to payload, ease and cost of maintenance, and parts availability it's hard to beat the Cessna Caravan. Pilates Turbo Porters have superior STOL capabilities but lack the logistic support. The Carvan is the world's back country turboprop of choice.

I've looked at ways of mounting a gunpod or two onto a Long-EZ. Either put some GPMG's in the luggage pods, or just drop an M2HB into the front of the cockpit. As long as you're smart with ballast it should be fine.
Couple that with my plans to install a Mazda 13B-MSP Renesis in lieu of the traditional Lycomimg engine, and you've got a cheap (to the tune of $30k before the guns) extremely long-endurance little gun platform that runs on 93 octane instead of avgas. Plus it looks fuckin' beautiful.
>>
zerg spamming these as multirole fighters might work, just have to engineer a couple of hard points on to them:

And this'd probably do ok at CAS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox90QXFGpHI

>>34537937
I'm actually seriously thinking about getting one of these in a few years. It seems like a ton of fun to fly, and it has enough range, speed, and payload to make it usable for more than just fucking around in the sky. (I travel between LA and Silicon Valley pretty regularly and flying BUR-SJC would shave at least half off my travel time compared to driving and would be about the same as flying commercial but with much less hassle.)
>>
>>34539260
Oh, and also, I have friends who go shooting and offroading on the dry lakes in the high desert, and I could fly out to meet them in the Zenith instead of driving for 3 hours. (Plus, how fucking cool would it be to show up and land on the dry lake in a fucking STOL plane?)
>>
>>34539278
There's actually a big club of big tire stol craft that fly around there
>>
>>34539116
that thing used to fly over my greenhouse.
fucker built it himself.
>>
>>34539116
You um... seem to have put a lot of thought into this.
>>
>>34539704
I've been planning on building it for a while - minus the guns, of course. I fucking love the airframe. It's just a matter of finding an extra $30k or so.

IMO, the Renesis is a perfect powerplant for the Long-EZ. It's almost the same size and weight as a standard O-320, but you get almost twice the power output, cheaper gas by far, and all the negatives of a Wankel (apex seals REEEEE) don't really factor in to aviation anyway, given the service intervals you're dealing with. Plus it seems like a suitably weird engine to go with a weird aircraft.
>>
>>34539116
Let me preface this question by saying i'm not well versed in aerospace. Does 93 octane burn well at higher altitudes? Or does the operational ceiling of this aircraft make any efficiency losses moot?
>>
>>34537870
Pilatus PC-12
King Air BE350
Boeing 737
L-188

>>
>>34539963
I'm in the process of working out the details myself, but frankly, I don't think I'd ever take it high enough to matter. Service ceiling on a normal Long-EZ is technically about 27,000ft, but I can't see much of a reason to ever push it that high, especially since it's unpressurized.

Frankly, I'd expect to lose a bit of efficiency from the Lycoming anyway. I'm not really sure how the Renesis compares with regards to efficiency (it's a little hard to compare auto to aviation engines given the different operating envelopes), but Wankels in general have pretty terrible gas mileage. I'm counting on the Long-EZ's already ridiculously long legs to sort of eat any difference in fuel economy. With the designed engine it manages like a 2000mi range, so I've got a bit of leeway there.

I'm basically engineering by the seat of my pants right now, given it will years before I can even consider making this a reality anyway.

Let's just hope the enemy doesn't have an L-100 and being led by a big guy.
>>
I'm 23 and will finish my PPL shortly. I'm motivated by a huge boner for aviation and the history thereof. I aspire to fly as much and as many different types of aircraft as possible, but this becomes trickier when referring to historical and military types.

I'm curious to ask, does anyone have any knowledge or experience regarding how one should go about finding opportunities to fly some of these birds? I've seen groups like the Commemorative air force, but most require considerable experience to even have a chance, and greatly favor ex-military.

>Can carry 3700 lbs and 1000 lbs of fuel
>is a radial, meaning that there's no water cooling to worry about and, even without oil, will keep cool and running for longer than straight engines
>can be converted to be amphibious, land on snow, or be armored up for more da/k/ka missions
>fuck tons are available
>it's Russian so therefore it's very stronk )))))))
>it's a biplane so it has very high lift for the relative space it takes up

Why is flying so fucking expensive?

I swear I'm going to have to get an ultralight experimentally rated just to rack up hours.

>if your engine gives out, you're fucked

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-2
>A note from the pilot's handbook reads: "If the engine quits in instrument conditions or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64 km/h (40 mph) and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground."
>>
>>34537965
But wasn't it made specifically as a training craft for the Swiss air force?
>>
>>34539963

high altitude will need forced induction to get a worthwhile amount of power from the engine, either turbo or supercharger

octane doesnt really matter

How do you intend to cool the Renesis? Putting a water-cooled engine in an application designed for an air-cooled one is hard enough as it is, and you'll have to deal with the lack of airflow that comes with a pusher design on top of the normal issues.
>>
/k/ can barely afford hi points, nuggets, and mavericks. An aircraft is out of the question unless it's a toy or something
>>
>>34545134
That's the hurdle I'm currently working on, actually. Other people have mounted the oil cooler under the left wingroot and the radiator directly under the engine, but I kinda want to see if I can't mount both in the same spot to cut down on drag a little. Plus it would please my autism to keep the externals symmetrical.
