Search luckygunner ballistic gel tests 9mm vs 40 vs 45

They show average expansion, penetration depth, and images of the actual gel of dozens of common brands and weights of ammo when fired from a 3 inch barrel. You're looking for something that at least averages 15" penetration and the final diameter matters less than how fast the bullet started expanding so look at the gel to find that. Remember, the first 2-4 inches represents ribcage, any damage here isnt very useful, damage after that is much more relevant. I use 124 grain XTP +p for cougar, dogs, and hopefully never bear but it's what I got because it's cheap, has good penetration, gets reliable expansion though not much of it, and I can't have Xtreme penetraters in my state.

For humans, it's not listed but I run 15 rounds of Underwood 124 grain golden sabers +p+. It's basically 357 Sig and averages about 5% less one shot stops compared to the highest rated 357 magnum, a 125 grain golden saber. There are no gel tests I found aside from on YouTube and it's fucking awesome even though it only gets 12" of penetration because of how fast that velocity makes it expand.

9mm NATO is yuro 9mm. Little more pressure but almost always fmj, not what you want. Militaries use fmj because most follow a doctrine of hollowpoint is inhumane.

9mm +p is a little more pressure than 9mm NATO and jhp comes in it.

9mm +p+ and 9mm major has no standard pressure and will void the warranty on most any gun but is pretty awesome if you've got the right gun for it. If it's a glock for example, you need a new barrel with a fully supported chamber before most people will consider it safe and even then it voids warrenty.
