I've got a 20" AR with a 1:7 twist, I'm trying to decide if I want a red dot or scope. But are there any good 1-4x with a high eye relief?

Thats alot of barrel to not want to reach out past 300m. I would get something in 1-8.

Aimpoint Micro H-1 on a Daniel Defense M4V1. Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 in my future.

The Aimpoint PRO is where it's at. But I just ordered a 512 for my RDB, so we'll see how that goes.

I bought it for the reliability and ability to put an m203 hearshield on it. Then I realized every steel target I shot was horribly dented or almost pent rated by standard .223 rounds when shooting 100yds. That fucking velocity man. What 1-8 would you recommend?

Currently on ARs:
Aimpoint T1 - fantastic
Aimpoint CompM4 - great
Aimpoint PRO - great
Primary Arms 1-6x - servicable, poor controls but well designed reticle
Nightforce 2.5-10x24 - good, dated features for the class
BSA Sweet22 3-9x - poor, canted reticle

Since sold but used on ARs past and present:
Eotech EXPS3 - good, I'm spoiled by leaving my Aimpoints on
Eotech 553 - good, same as above
Elcan SpecterDR 1-4 - servicable overall, good as a 4x, 1x is near useless
Bushnell ET6-24x50 - good
Bushnell TRS25 - poor, heavily tinted lens same battery gripes as the Eotechs
Trijicon TA11 - great
Trijicon TR20 3-9x - good

Primary arms 1-8x24 acss is arguably the same quality glass as a vortex strike eagle in the same magnification. It just has a better reticle in my opinion and about 100 dollars cheaper.

Right now I have a TA31 ACSS, it's absolutely amazing for shooting from 75-400 yards.

500 is difficult, with 600 being a crapshoot but still very possible.

I would seriously question the need for a magnified optic if you're going to use a rifle for self defense or anti people duties.

Bottom line is it was much easier to line up a shot and fire accurately with my old EOTech even at about 75 yards on a 12" target.

The TA31s Eye relief is restrictive.

My 8" 300blk upper has my CompM4 on it currently, I'd much prefer another Micro for it but it just hasn't risen to the top of my priorities.

If you aren't looking to spend Aimpoint money I read good things about the Holosun and Primary Arms micros.
