Anyone have a good defensive knife to recommend? Only requirements is it needs to be 5 and 1/2 inches or less (Texasfag). I'm only interested in case something happens where drawing is not possible (and I don't mean choosing to draw the knife, I mean like drawing would be either not possible or could just get me killed due to close quarters, shit like that).

CS talwar 4 or 5.5 inch
>>
>>34536157
I understand. My recollection of the new law is that anything over 5.5 inches will be location restricted, and I'd at least like a blade I can take anywhere. However, now that I think about it, anywhere I can take my gun is where you can take the location restricted knives, which for me means no issue since I haven't seen a store yet that restricted my concealed carry.

So in that case, just give me the knife you think is a good one that is decently concealable.

For your needs, it sounds like the type of knife you're looking for is a "get the fuck off me" knife, where someone's trying to grab your gun or you otherwise can't draw because you're pinned/close quarters.

A knife designed for this purpose would be something like the Spartan Knives CQB Tool, the Shivworks Clinch Pick/Disciple, and the Spyderco Reverse.

I'll also throw out the Bark River Vest Pocket Bowie. It's not necessarily ideal for this purpose, but it's blade length is just under 5 & 1/2 inches and it's a bowie. If you're a Texan, it just seems right that you should have one.
>>

Hey guys, completely new to knives. I have a Skeletool that uses a 154CM stainless blade and desperately needs sharpening as it's seen a bit of wear. The serrated portion is still sharp, so I'm only interested in sharpening the rest of the front edge. Is there a guide or article I can read to learn more about sharpening knives that you'd recommend, or could anyone give me recommendations on what to buy material wise to get the blade sharpened up? I'm willing to put in the effort as it's a skill I want to learn. Thanks guys.
>>
Whats the best stone for a newfag? I've been using normal kitchen knife stones and stuff and i'm sure there are better ones for more serious people.
>>

if you care about your current knife get a 5 dollar harbor freight shitpile machete and a stone
practice on the machete until you get a good edge
doesnt matter if you fuck up cause you will only be out like 10 bucks total and that machetes got enough metal on it to keep trying.

Just got my ZT.

While it's built like a tank and I am loving it, at $200+, I was a bit dissapointed that it came with a pretty lopsided profile, 40 minutes on waterstones and it's a lot more better now.

I guess it is a production knife in the end.

Also, should I round out a larger fixed blade in 4" or 5"?
>>
>>34539369
It's not hard, you just need to get the hang of forming a nice even burr on both sides, and learn how to remove it. Once you can do that you can sharpen whatever on whatever.

I spent like twenty bucks on some pocket stones and my knives are sharp as shit.

It's for trademark purposes. It's a tiny hole anyways.

>>34541445
H1 is amazing if rust is your chief concern.

It's pretty much invulnerable to rust. You can get it to corrode if you try hard enough, but the chemicals that would cause it to corrode would seriously fuck you up anyways.

You may also get something where it looks like it's rusting, but it's actually just leftover metal dust from the manufacturing process that's rusting, not the H1 itself.

Plain edge edge retention isn't great, but serrated is pretty good.

there are a LOT of knives for sale out there for less than half the cost of an Emerson
most of these knives are made from great steel, they cut nicely, hold an edge and feel great in your hand. you can even get other knives that have the Emerson Wave
if you want to buy, carry and use something other than an Emerson, i encourage you to do so
i like Emerson's knives.
they feel very comfortable, they perform as intended and i like the way they look.

i wish they were less expensive
>>
New to knives here. I have a basic bitch stone and a couple of knives already (a folder for work and EDC and a fixed-blade for innawoods), and I have a fair idea of the simple mechanics of sharpening, but what's the real difference between water and oil for lubricant? And do you prefer pushing the edge into the stone, or drawing it back across the stone?
>>
for incredibly budget butterfly knifes, which is better: joker or albainox?
>>
>>34543520
I push into the edge to sharpen and pull back to strop.
I'd use water because it will move away any metal or stone grains where as oil will make them stick.
Oil after sharpening.

Well god damn it, now I'm upset. I searched all around for a Bark River vest pocket bowie that had the concealment sheath that you can take out and stuff in your pants, but it seems all the new ones have only a single attachment point which would leave it down at your side, instead of being able to mount it horizontally or conceal it in your pants. The "rogue sheath" (http://www.barkriverknives.com/index/rogue-sheath/) has the style I'm after. Old videos of the vest pocket bowie had that sheath, but it seems all the new pocket bowies come with a standard sheath that can't detach like that.

I've always used Case Cutlery knives, but they're a bit on the expensive side because people collect them--I like them because that's what I grew up using. I've got an Imperial (the older American made ones are good, the quality dropped when they got sold off overseas) that I've been using a lot lately, you can find them for $20 or $30 or so. I love mine and I showed it to a dude who had been running a knife shop for a quarter century, and he said he keeps the same one in his tackle box and loves it to death. Coincidentally, he was also a big Case guy and credited himself with popularizing Case pocket knives in the Minot, ND area.

Depends on what gardening tasks you're doing. There are lots of different machete blade sizes and styles for different tasks and usages. I've got an old Guatemalan-manufacture Legitimus Collins & Co. 14" machete that I picked up for $25 that does anything I need a machete to do.

Wicked Edge.

>>34553133
I carry one every day and typically use it 3-6 times a day while I'm working.

You don't need $60 for a good machete. Look at Condor and Cold Steel (look at the Jungle and Latin machetes). Cold Steel is my go to for a good working tool. The general problem with most machetes though is they are not nearly sharp or have a thin enough edge from factory to be effective at brush clearing. When I get a new machete, I always spend a while reprofiling and sharpening it.

Also consider, a machete is not really the best for gardening, it is a rough work tool, good for clearing a lot of brush fast. For finer tasks, sheers, saws, and hedge trimmers are superior.

>The general problem with most machetes though is they are not nearly sharp or have a thin enough edge from factory to be effective at brush clearing. When I get a new machete, I always spend a while reprofiling and sharpening it.
This is intentionally the industry standard for a working tool. Different types of work require different edges, so a machete is left without a proper edge so you can profile it to suit your needs.

Unfortunately most of those sharpening services aren't that great, especially for something like a machete that needs a lot of reprofiling and not just a sharper "v" edge.

Convex sharpening a machete is not that had to do for cheap if you have an hour or two. Just buy sheets of sandpaper (like 60, 200, 600, ect...), tape it down on top of a mouse pad (for easy convexing), and splash it with some water.

More power to you. I keep a $12 Opinel in my bag all the time, and my GF loves here $20 Kershaw Amplitute and Tekut Zero.

I'm not saying that there are not reliable and good knives for less than $60... I'm just saying in general I find the highest general performance, sturdiness, good ergonomics, and long term durability seem to be in that range. The Cold Steel Code 4 for example is one of my most used knives (pic related).

I don't think carrying an expensive knife is absurd. I commonly carry a ZT 0562cf, and I know a lot of other people who are fine with carrying $200+, heck $500+ knives. Granted I'm more likely to beat on a sub $100 knife.

Hey guys could I get a recommendation? I am looking for a new knife. I want something about 4.5 inches long and is first and foremost a defensive folder, but anything between 4-5 inches is fine. (Bonus points is it looks intimidating and has a wave opener)
I currently carry a Cold Steel Spartan and it is pretty much exactly what I am looking for, but I have found that honing the edge and sharpening the damn thing is a pain in the ass. Really I like the spartan, but I want a something easier to take care of. Something better than CTS-BD1 would be pretty nice too.
>>
>>34556950
Cold Steel just about owns the XL folder market. Maybe try out one of their CTS-XHP large folders. I find the XHP in my Code 4 to be pretty good with edge holding, almost as good as Spyderco does their XHP but a touch softer. So maybe the 4" Talwar, I have a 5.5" one and like it.

What kind of stuff are you cutting most of the time? BD1 is not that bad of a steel, if you have a proper edge on it to start with, it should hold pretty long with some occasional stropping.

But if you are looking for alternatives to CS, Benchmade makes some pretty large ones, and Spyderco has one or two... Probably not with a wave though.
>>
>>34557199
I figured that Cold Steel would be pretty much my only option. Anyway, like I said It is a defensive knife, but I do on occasion cut cardboard. paper, those stupid vacume sealed plastic packages, etc. Mostly the shit you would use a normal EDC knife for. I just want mine to be bigger in case I need to defend myself while I am in college and I can't carry my gun.

I was actually considering the 4 inch Talwar and the Black Talon, but just wanted an outside opinion before I sink my money into a knife.
>>
>>34557380
What about the Colossus, Safe Maker, and Immortal? The Colossus is pretty much a Spartan only with a leaf blade instead of a mini kukri shape. The Safe Maker is 4.5 inches like you wanted and is a spear point punch knife. The Immortal is basically a clip point tanto. It is pretty neat looking IMO.

Hi, I'm /new/ to KTG.

I am on the edge between 3 knives for
A) EDC and
B) just to look nice and
C) martial arts training (something similar to training daggers we use in class)

I am on the fence between 3 models:

1) Fairbairn-Sykes (by Gerber or Böker)
2) Fairbairn-Applegate Combat II (Böker)
3) Gerber Guardian Back-Up

I really like the look of all of these, I like the fact that (except for the Sykes one, IIRC) all can be carried horizontally on the belt, but the Back-Up is not as long.

Can anyone who owns these knives give me a small review/piece of advice on which knife would be the best? Thanks, guise.

>>
>>34564903
I found this: https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/pt/-lansky-sharpening-stone-for-knives-with-a-curved-blade-hr1000.htm

is hr1000 just the model name or is that the grit?

Also should I get several stones with different grits or would one stone with "extra fine" grit be enough? I use my knife every now and then but I don't abuse it.
>>
>>34564946
It's an ultra-fine sharpening stone. The way you work is you get a burr with the roughest blade and then get a certain number of strokes on each side with a medium and fine grit stone. Finally, you use a strop the knife on leather or (if the situation is dire) the rough underside of a ceramic cup.

Diamonds (from what I hear) are great for sharpening because they can take the hardest of blades.

So: Ultra-fine is great for small maintenance (if you get a small nick in the blade), but if you have a blunt blade, you're up shit's creek without a paddle if you only have fine.

You can just strop it without compounds to keep the edge aligned, because during the sharpening the edge will become misaligned.

The compounds are used for giving the blade the extra SHINE (IIRC). Imagine a water surface: If the water is wavy, it doesn't shine as much and is much rougher. If it's calm weather, it's like a mirror. On a blade, if your blade has a lot of holes and deformities and stuff, it will have a large reactionary surface and therefore will catch rust quicker. What you want is a mirror-shiny surface so that it 1) looks better 2) holds out against rust and shit and 3) gets you a better, more uniform edge.

Before you buy any fixed blade please figure out how you will carry and draw it. You'll most likely have to carry it on your belt.

A big fixed blade can be hard to attach somewhere concealed.

I've done a little testing of that with my San Mia III Recon Tanto... By no means comprehensive, just payed attention to things a bit more closely than normal.

I found the Secure Ex does remove supper high level sharpness (we are talking mirror polished, well above factory) after a hand full of more aggressive drawls. But bellow that, closer to factory sharpness levels, it's hardly a factor. The sheath will not really effect a work sharp edge, at lest in the time frame of how fast actual use will dull the edge.
>>
>>34541306
It's on their kitchen knives too
>>
>>34569733
As soon as I draw my Kobun and the edge touches the sheath it immediately rolls over, SUPER bummer. I think it varies sheath to sheath, but they for sure dull the edge quite quick.

Yeah thats actually what i was thinking as well

>sandpaper handle slabs
>linseed oil handle slabs
>polish blade to mirror
>etc

Its werid (to me) seeing a $100+ bowie thats still considered a project knife to most people,

I did alot of cold steel tomahawks and gave them away to friends as gifts

I might also get pic related,

But last time i bought a micarta condor product the oil they ship them in made the handles a dark nasty black so i might go with the undertaker instead
>>
>>34574902

I've contemplated getting one, haven't actually gotten around to it yet though.
>>
>>34576993
Condor makes good stuff though. I'd take them over the frontier bowie. I just don't get why cold steel wouldn't fix the issues with the frontier or just drop it. Seems ridiculous to keep making a knife that has so many problems. I remember when I bought a gladius machete and the edge was absolutely terrible. A few months later they started sharpening them in America. Even advertised it because africa couldn't get the edge right.
>>
>>34577129
i love condor more than any other companies just because they work with a lot of wood
but i don't have any wood stuff from cold steel,(im not counting the tomahawks bc lmao its a stick)

only poly and g-10 stuff

i don't think i would complain about most of my $10-25 machetes when i can do them myself, but if they are trying to improve by making a serviceable edge from the box that's a noble extra step for their customers

i might get pic related to see if they really do, as im on a giant bowie kick
>>
>>34577230
I usually get rid of the factory edge as soon as i buy something i just find it funny they would improve one product but not another. CS does make some good products but their marketing sometimes gives the wrong image if you ask me. I feel like they lose some of the market because people over look them with their extreme advertising. They also improved their warranty in the past few years. Lynn Thompson is a funny guy though. The culmination of 20 years wasn't a knife that could cut but a knife that could lift a car..... Was that really the best way to sell the 3V warcraft tanto?

their first set of videos 9-10 years ago on youtube was a little much, then 4 years ago more of the same videos but more extreme and edgy,

>lynn screams DIE! every time he cuts something
it makes me either cringe or laugh or both,

i stick to their folders/machetes mostly but i haven't actively looked for a product of theirs in a few years

usually i get into a "taste of the week"
(this week its Bowie knives) and look at my favorite companies for that specific thing,

The knife case is a 1500 and my Sharpening/maintenance case is a 1560.

>>34578639
The first thing I bought was the Pro Pack 1 from BladeHQ like 5 years ago... I think it was around $350 at the time. Everything else, all the upgrades, I just bought direct from Wicked Edge. All in all I've probably spent around $1200-$1300, but that's because I've been upgrading and did not buy everything up front, that would be a lot cheaper, probably around $800 to get a comparable set up. I almost have enough old parts to have a second WE. I have more sharpening equipment that does not go in the case, like my 1x30 belt sander and free hand stones as well, I do more than just guided sharpening.

Everything in the case, including the Wiha Torx sets, Nano Oil, Spyderco Sharpaker, WE, the case it's self, ect... is somewhere around $1200-$1500.

This all sounds like a lot, and it is, but keep in mind that for me sharpening is a pass time, and a part time income. I've more than payed for everything, and most my knives, with my sharpening.

I think it is cool, and I'm glad they are targeting the sub $200 market, because that is a lot more reasonable for more knife fans.

But I would have liked to see some changes, but I understand why they don't, these would increase the price, and bite into the sales of the higher end set ups.

1) Screw locking jaw. It's fine, I used mine for years, but the newer Gen 3 cam lock jaws save a lot of time, take out a lot of unneeded fines, and self center... Pic related.

2) Sub 1 degree increment changes. All Gen 2 WE's and newer have this, and for good reason; knives never center perfectly, even with the new cam lock jaws. And it's easier to match bevels.

3) Include, or at lest have a spot for, an angle cube. The degree increments are set for a blade of an exact height, anything taller or shorter will be off of the displayed angle.

4) Have at lest spots in the pouch for at lest 3 other stone sets. The 200-400 is a good choice for a one stop sharpener... but I almost always start with my 100-200s or even sometimes 60-80s. If I had to pick 4 stones (that they make) it would be 100-200, 400-600, 800-1000, and 5μm- 3.5μm strops. Custom stones it would be; 80-200, 600-1000, 1200-1600, strops.

I'll have to look into it more... but honestly, if you are just looking at it for a set angle system of this price, and not the portability.. consider looking at the Viper Sharp, KME, and Edge Pro Apex. The EPA being $200+ but roughly as capable as a larger WE set up.
