A range should absolutely disallow handling of firearms for any reason while anyone is downrange. Gives them an easy visual check and idk about you but I wouldnt like having the back of my skull blown apart cause "I swear it wasn't loaded."

C2's range officers have been pretty bro tier for me for the most part, its just an expensive place to shoot.

You can use PCS orders to your station in VA or the pentagon to prove residency and you'll have to use your military ID for a photo ID. If you live off base you'll have to use GOVT ISSUED identification to prove your physical address.
OR BETTER YET
To make this easy, just get a VA license or id card with your home (IN VA) address on it and use it to buy guns after it's 30 days old. Makes paperwork a non pain in the ass for you and the shop.

There's Peacemaker range right across the border in West Virginia, as well as a few private shooting clubs like Fairfax Rod and Gun. The outdoor ranges in this area are almost all private but they are usually really nice. Your best bet is Elite Shooting Sports which has a 100 yard indoor range.

Anyone know any good gunsmiths in newport news to williamsburg area?

So far everyone ive talked to are glorified armorers and not formerly trained gunsmiths( meaning they can assemble things, and they dont have formal metal shop knowledge).

All i want done for now is replace my rem 700 bolt knob with a larger one. Eventually i would like to find someone who can inlet and bed stocks. I really prefer to use locals instead of sending my rifles off for months to have basic work done. Im new to the area coming from nevada, and its crazy how few gunsmiths there are here.

Ive been in contact with:

Bobs gunshop, they only do basic armorer stuff and cleaning.

Toano gun shop, they do basic armorer stuff plus can dovetail and drill things.

Modern paladin, i thought this place would work out since they have a cnc and lathe and are the only shop with an ffl 07, but all they do is cerakote, dovetail, and drill things. The guy literally told me he didnt know how to replace a bolt knob....

All i literally need done is chop off current knob, round off the end in a lathe or grinder, and either thread, or weld the new knob on. Back in nevada this is a 15 dollar 10 min job for the weld method.

Ive been going to C2, but its stupid that you cant stand up and shoot offhand in the rifle area. Also the cold times are way too fucking long especially because its so expensive. Last time i was there i asked when cold time would be over so i could start my time when its hot time. They told me 5 minutes, so i paid, set up my targets and waited inside. It took 30 minutes before hot time started. When i asked if they could charge me starting at the hotime they said no because i already set my things up 40 minutes before.

Ive considered joining a club that has a range, but ft eustis and the one in yorktown require club members to invite and i dont know anyone. Ive considered signing up for mechanicsville one but you cant bring more than 1 guest at a time and you have to show up on sundays for probation period cleaning and range safety.
