Okay Americans, was this you or was it the Russians?

>some dudes surveying the Gävle harbour with sonar
>all is well and good until pic related appears on their screens
>they send the picture to "Swedish Television", the govt. operated media outlet
>Ruskie scaremongering begins
>Some ex-military dudes from Sweden say "I know what I'm looking at, this is no laughing matter" and then nothing more

>The mini-sub theory gets the most publicity because it's the easiest to turn into clickbait I guess
>rational people are still debating whether it's just a school of fish or perhaps an echo from a ships hull on the surface
>some say it's an american Seal Carrier, others say it's a russian Triton NN

So, was it you guys or the Russians?

It was 12 meters long/3 m wide.
>>
How big was it? The Russians have been operating some spooky small subs lately, with plans for Arctic expansion.

It was there, seen twice by survey ship, and it was 12x3m. In an hour it was gone.

It looks more like this thing.

Note the red rectangle on the sonar pics and the big rectangular open space on the sub. Also front/bow of the object in the sonar pic is slightly skewed to the right, and the Triton seems to have some kind of sonar thing on the right part of the bow that could explain this.

The bow/front/pointy end also looks like it gradually gets deeper like on the Triton, not a plump bow like the seal carrier has.

It looks like the propeller pods on the Triton are retractable into the hull, that would explain why they aren't visible on the sonar picture if the Triton was just resting on the bottom with the divers deployed.

Looks like you guys had a visit from the Ruskies
>>
>>34522387
So it was black instead of white
>>
>>34522401
12m is too small for what I was thinking, one of their small but not minisub-sized nuclear boats. Given the location I'd bet on Russia anyways, but nobody quite knows if the Triton-NN is even in service yet.

They are research subs you dumb cunts, there are like million of them operating for private contractors.
>>
>>34522543
Possible, though you'd expect a research sub to be known to government, and shit like this keeps happening in Sweden. The approximate 12m size is throwing me, though. Too big for most SDVs, but too small for any known midget sub class.
>>
>>34522600
>though you'd expect a research sub to be known to government
That is actually not true and there are independent organizations operating without the need to report their workings.
Again they are PRIVATE PROPERTY AND PRIVATE BUSINESS.

That doesn't mean they can just ride into a busy commercial harbour unannounced.

The people who discovered it were hired by the harbour to map the sea bottom.

Just some funfact; One of those searches some years ago actually found a russian submarine, but plotwist: it sunk about a hundred years ago.
>The mystery vessel was found off the Swedish coast last week lying on the sea floor, its hatches closed. Cyrillic letters on the hull suggested it was Russian.
>This week, the Swedish authorities said they had solved the mystery: The vessel was an imperial submarine — nicknamed a Catfish — that had probably sunk after colliding with a Swedish vessel in 1916, during World War I.
>“We have seen the wreck and we can confirm that the vessel is from the czarist era and that it is a submarine that collided with another ship,” Lubna El-Shanti, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Armed Forces, said on Wednesday by telephone from Stockholm. “It is a very old vessel. It is from before the time of the Soviet Union.”
>>
>>34522933
Er.. I doubt any navy is constantly scanning every harbour with sonar. The people who found it were private contractors hired by the harbour to map the seafloor as part of routine maintenance.

Just google "SEAL Carrier", you'll find loads of information, but the short and sweet of it is that they can run at 35-40 knots on the surface with diesel engines, and then they can submerge and run with electric motors to reach a target.

>>34522963
No, the surveying company did two passes over it, but when they went back for a third pass it was gone.

Have the swedes sent divers down there to look for any traces of what they might have been doing? Any cables in the area? Is the location they were spotted to close to some sort of important facility or ship that was docked nearby?

>>34523001
>using a submarine to smuggle drugs
>operating in plain sight
>surfacing your submarine in the middle of the harbor to offload your drugs
Your theory is incoherent. Using a submarine is the opposite of "in plain sight". And what the fuck is the point of using a submarine to smuggle if you're going to surface the thing in full view of everybody?

This. Worrying about possible naval attacks when your capital city is full of foreign invaders is a silly thing to do. But what do you expect of the people who stockholm syndrome was named after? I suspect stockholm syndrome isn't even a mental illness, just a mental trait of the swedes.
>>
>>34523010
I don't know, the navy has been informed and are "investigating".

A spokesman for the navy said that the most likely explanations are either a school of fish, a container or a wreck. This is retarded because a school of fish wouldn't be in the same place looking the same way for two sonar passes, and a container is unlikely to have moved. An uncharted wreck in a busy commercial harbour (which also magically moved before the third pass) is probably the most ridiculous explanation so far.

Since they're giving these retarded explanations they probably know something they aren't telling us.
>>

What? A private company, hired by the harbour, was conducting a survey of the seafloor. They saw this oddity on two passes overhead, but not on a third, meaning it was gone. They gave the pictures to the navy and they somehow got leaked to media.

The vessel was gone long before the navy was even involved, let alone able to "track his ass"...
>>
>>34523029
>smuggling drugs in a minisub disguised as a research submarine, using a ship disguised as a research vessel
For what possible reason?

When smugglers smuggle in plain sight, they do it with regular ships disguised as regular ships. Fishing vessels, leisure vessels, etc. Nothing unnecessarily expensive that unnecessarily draws attention like a mini-sub.

And yes, I know about the Colombian semi-submersibles and submersibles. They don't surface and unload those in plain view in the middle of fucking harbors.

>>
>>34523222
Russia care about the baltics, nobody can deny that.

And in order to take them, all you need to do is place missiles on Gotland, wich is you guessed it, Swedish soil. So they look into possible ways to take strategic parts of Sweden in case of war.

A map from the Russian generals staff showed in Russian TV even marked Gävle harbor as a strategic point for Nato in case of war.

Sure, they might not want war, but if war happens, they are planning on fighting it others soil than their own, so they do intel on that.

Hypothetically, if Russia invaded Sweden, wouldn't that give them easy access from the baltic sea to the atlantic?

There's a canal that goes through the country from Stockholm to Gothenburg on the west coast, that way they wouldn't have to sail past Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia in order to get to St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

Not really, the canal is too much of a bottleneck. It would however, most likely be impossible for Denmark to seal of the Baltic sea should southern Sweden be occupied.

Should also be noted that Danish ASW capacity is literally 0, so taking out the swedish navy gives your submarines free reign in the danish straits (i guess the Dutch are the only other ones that could be a problem?). Sweden has some, but they've dismantled much of it, as it used to be very good.

What you all are ignoring is that sweden has a steel and heavy machinery production that is ranked as the number 1 worldwide when it comes to steel quality.
Vlad Ruskie would be drooling all over it should the worst come to happen (e.g Russia invading the baltics and NATO putting the foot down).

A Russia-ruled Sweden could strangle any and all shipping coming into, or out of the baltic area. This would mean no more High-quality iron and steel for you mr. Yankee. Add to this easy strike possibilities int Norway and Denmark and you have a very scary situaltion.

Luckily all this is just contingency planning at this point. Still, even contingency plans have to be updated with shipping movements and harbor mapping from time to time.
>>
>>34523485

Precisely. They're admitting in this thread that Russia isn't going to invade Sweden, but when pressed on why they're so afraid of Russian minisubs, they say it's because Russia invaded Crimea. But when pressed further claim that they aren't implying Russia will invade Sweden by bringing up the invasion of Crimea.

Of course the Russians like being feared, their gene pool is polluted with Mongol warrior genes. It makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside.
>Nobody is afraid of russia
The response from Sweden would seem to suggest otherwise. Russia glanced at them sideways and Swedes are wetting their pants. Should we blame Russia for bullying Sweden? Or should we blame Sweden for being an pathetic wussy with a frail emotional state?

I'd say both. Russians shouldn't be Russians, but they are. And Russians being Russians shouldn't be enough to send Sweden into a tizzy.

Sure thing, that must be the reason why we got so many people acting exactly like you, always in defense of russia, either defending russian aggression or crying about every fart in russias far direction as an act of aggression against russia. But magically those people never argue on any other side, we like to call them "neutral" posters here, just saying with you being new and unfamiliar with term we use here or how.

Now wait a second and think of a responds before you read any further.

I said stop reading.

You aint making it any better.

Got your response ready? Go down the checklist, lets see how many you got:
[ ]you say i am paranoid
[ ]you think i think there is a big conspiracy behind it and i am an idiot for it, while i never said it
[ ]you call me butthurt/muslim/hohol or an other variant depending on how mad you are
[ ]you say i have no basis to say such claims and i must explain myself, while you didnt explain yourself for anything
[ ]you say i must think you are getting paid
[ ]ridiculing exaggerating strawman
[ ]....
I could go on and on, but i think you catch my drift, talking to you is pretty repetitive, including to explain over and over how repetitive it is, while you will claim it is not the case like always.
