Its a swield
The chicken wire holds the kevlar plate on and deflects non-bullet projectiles like rocks/bottles
The blade is for punching like a fist while holding the metal handle with your arm strapped by the belt.
I just wanted to do something cool with scrap stuff that was laying around

Do yourself a favor and get some wood glue or something, forget the chicken wire. Take the blade off the end of the thing because it'll literally only ever be used to stab the fuck out of you, and if you slip you'll earn a fucking knife to the gut.

forgot to say that the wire is covering the sharp edges of a tin sign I snipped and screwed onto the wood. I might replace it with some kind of fabric. Pleather maybe? I don't want to spend money on it tho
The blade is way too long to turn on myself while its strapped to my arm, plus its screwed on tight, there's over a foot of blade you can't see in the pic. Its not going anywhere.

I made a cutlass in my backyard on my homemade forge with an anvil a buddy of mine made from scrap. I think it qualifies for this thread.

Thank you, sir. I assume you're the one who made the other blades there? They look very fine! I can't say mine is all scrap. I got 1075 from Admiral steel for the blade, but the rest is remnants from other projects. Mostly odds and ends of steel I got at Home Depot or Lowes, and the white cedar handle was from a bundle of firewood.

I gotta say, it's neat running into a fellow smith. I mean, I'm amateur as fuck, but I guess I count as a smith. I've only made a few dagger blades (most still require hilts), a sickle that my wife wanted me to make her (also no handle yet) and the one sword. But holy hell is it fun. Great hobby, I think.

Wait, is this true? How the hell do k-pots work then? Also seems like there would be extremely nasty indentations from getting shot while wearing a vest.
Its not glued down at least, just sitting there with another layer of tin and chicken wire between it and the wood, so if its true there may be enough space for it to 'catch' bullets

When I'm holding it in a defensive position the blade is above my head.
Literally the only way it can be 'turned on me' is if its unstrapped from my arm and taken away.
Or if I somehow fell off a cliff and stabbed myself in the leg with it, but that's a risk with any spikey thing.

It was a short sword with a rat tail tang, broke it when I was a teenager but held onto the blade. I think it will work fine as a spike, sawed off the remains of the tang and drilled a couple holes in the base of it to secure it to the shield.

Main issue is how the sword pokes out of the edge rather than the center. that means you need to drop your guard to attack. Most successful shields had a boss in the middle so you can still attack while protected. This also means that if you switch positions, like swinging the shield down to protect your legs, you're in danger of cutting into your legs or arm.

Other than that the chicken wire makes a bad wrap since it pokes you at the worst times. The wrap style construction means that the part holding it together is the most exposed. Repeated hits would snap the mesh and the shield would fall apart.

It's actually just iron sights in a tube. The rear sight is vertically adjustable, and if you loosen some screws, the whole tube adjusts side to side.
It's not a .22 though it looks like it, its a .28 black powder gun. Loads from the breech side by unscrewing a cap, fires using a matchlock mechanism.

The other one also has a 20" barrel that can be swapped in by removing the wood block. There is a front sight but I didn't have it on for the picture. I've developed some pretty fun projectiles for that one.
