Revolver general: talk me out of it edition.

19-3 pinned and recessed. Barely even has a turn ring. Tight as a drum. $700 otd. Do it?
>>
>>34514325
Yes.
>>
>>34514325
For collecting purposes? Yes. For I wanna shoot a shit load of magnum rounds? No.
>>
>>34514758
Eh I have an mr73 for that. And why not? These have the full forcing cone.
>>
>>34514815
The whole reason the L-frame exists is that the K-frame proved over time that it could not eat a steady diet of magnums without problems. Do some research before you fuck up a collectible gun but treating it like a Ruger GP100.
>>
>>34514873
Jesus calm your tism. I am not gonna shake it apart anyway. I would buy it as a range toy and only load 158gr for it. If I wanna blast away with hot shit I'll do it with my manurhin. But I don't think a couple of boxes of magnum 157gr is gonna hurt a 19-3.

It's your money bro. I just think those old 19s are getting too pricey and collectible to be used alot as shooters. Also you have no idea how it's been treated over the years and what kind of metal fatigue could be hiding under that decent finish. If I wanted an old Smith to whip at the range on the regular I'd find one in .38spl. Any flavor of Model 10/M&P, model 15 etc.

Upon further inspection, looks like the threading on one side is completely stripped, and the other side isn't looking so good either. New grips it is then.
Any comfy grips you guys recommend? I liked how the pachmayr grips look, so I might get ones with finger grooves since they look a little comfier.

On an unrelated note, this double action pull is buttery smooth. Are all model 10s like this or does that smoothness just come from the use?
>>
>>34515302
Smoothness usually means use. However if it's light and smooth you may have tired springs. They are cheap enough to replace; Wolff makes kits.

I have the model 64 above and have owned a pile of smiths. I like those pachmayr renegades (wooden finger grips) for the money but hogue monogrips are mad comfy. But ugly.

If you want premium grips that look good and work, and don't want to spend eagle money, check out altamont.

Should I pull the trigger this week on a Single Six in .22. Fuck I've wanted one for a long time. Should I go 9 shot or convertible? Blued or Stainless?
>>
>>34517457
You can shoot .22LR in a .22WMR cylider, right?
If so, I see no reason to get the convertible.
What's your intended application?
Are you interested in .22WMR for hunting small game or something?
If it's just a range toy, why not get the .22LR Single Ten?
>>
>>34517798
I like the look and action of the single six/nine better honestly. And mostly because i'm a real accessory hound. To my knowledge, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the WMR barrel only comes with the convertible anyway so if I got the single nine shot I don't have the option to use WMR at all. It is mostly a range toy but I'd like to think it'll see a few raccoons and possums we have at our farm too.

Early K frames couldn't take it. Nor could early N frames. Things get updated. There was a time when the idea of a J-frame. 357 would have you thrown in the looney bin but here we are

That bitch is headed back to ruger. It sounds like your cylinder is warped or poorly machined and the action is having trouble engaging that particular chamber. Being warm may just warp it enough to push it over the edge.

Anyone here into the minutia of old S&Ws? I'm looking at getting an old 4 screw M&P but I got a question about it. The serial number on the bottom of the grip does not match the one on the frame under the barrel/yoke area(where modern model number would be). The number under the barrel also it has an "L" stamped above it and a "2" stamped below it.

Anyone exprain prease?
>>
>>34515829
I bought one in person during that deal. It has PSCC 47 carved into the frame, but otherwise it looks almost brand new. I asked to see if they had any with wood grips and they brought out a pre-lock 64 with original grips, but it looked extremely rough.
>>
>>34520581
Found info....Number in yoke cut of frame is an assembly# and not a serial. The "L" stame denotes left-hand threading of the extractor rod threads. Number under the assembly number is an inspector or fitter stamp.

I want to belive, but all the load data I see says otherwise. Also proper bullets for magnum power are eaiser to find for 44 mag. There are also more choices. Though my biggest reason is that a mag 45 will somehow end up im my new vaqero.
>>
>>34517353
You're pretty good
>>
>>34522750
I have 3 tiers of loads. One tier for my SAAs, one tier for my S&W 25-5 and one tier for my Blackhawk. If you can't keep loads separate you are a fail reloader with a poorly thought out system. Label your shit and pay attention to what you're doing. If you only have two tiers of loads you might consider using brass cases for the light stuff and nickel for the hot stuff to help you out.

As far as bullets for hot ass 45colt loads there are more than enough hunting type jacketed bullets out there but I use hard cast lead bullets with wax gas checks. I have never had to clean lead out of my Blackhawk. YMMV if you have a longer barrel than 4 3/4".

I've had dudes hooting 44mags come down to my stall to see wtf I was shooting that was compressing the air in the indoor range so much they could feel it. When they find out it's 45 colt many will ask if I'm above saami specs with my load because they bought the meme about 45 colt when they got their 44mags.

Good times.
>>
>>34517954
This.
>>
>>34517954
Classic cars can be rebuilt. There ain't no fixing a 40+yr old K frame that's been wrecked by too many magnum rounds. Bonus is most people don't shoot much they just buy shit and let it sit. Bad thing is in 40-50 years of god knows what kind of shooting regimen you takes your chances.

I shoot all my old guns but when I want to feel magnum powah or do high round count training I use my newer mfg guns.
>>
>>34522886
>light stuff and nickel for the hot stuff
that was my plan and/or using jacketed for mag
>I have never had to clean lead out
I put 500 lead though my new vaqero with no leading. My gp leads like crazy though. I tried diffrent loads and powder to no avail. The prices on GC'd bullets makes me just buy some xtps. Does the wax as a check mean you need no lube groove or is it just extra lube?
>>
>>34522968
No you still need lube. All the wax gas check does is give the initial blast from ignition something to destroy other than the edges of the bullet. Honestly it may be placebo with the hardness of the bullets I use now but I got in the habit of using them and keep right on.

I've had good luck with bullets from these guys if you want something new to try in ur GP.

http://www.xtremebullets.com/Hard-Cast-Lead-Bullets-s/5460.htm
>>
>>34523012
>hardness of the bullets
I think that the lower pressure of mag 45's makes leading less of an issue.

I just got though 500 of missouri "357 action" bullets. Like I said earler they lead, but a coulple of cylinders of max power jacketed 357 clean it out. It works better then I thought it would. The barrel was pretty clean with only a few flecks of burnt poweder.

Also:
>one tier for my S&W 25-5
Don't they reccomend against that?

>>
>>34523072
From what I remember Smiths are not like Rugers. The 44 mag guns (29) are specially heat treated metal, and the 45 guns are just rated for saa 45's. where as the rugers are over built. Bufflo bore loads say only Rugers also. Though if you get no overpressure signs then whatever I guess.
>>
>>34523151
Oh I get you. My SAA loads are really light. My S&W load could be considered "standard" I guess and then my blackhawk gets beaten like a red-headed step child.
>>
>>34523180
That makes sense. I just make max standard pressure 250 gn loads for my new vaqero. Has enough recoil to be fun with out being harsh.

Why do revolvers typically have six shots? Modern grenade launcher cylinders also tend to have six, so it can't just bea matter of antiquity or ammunition type, right? Is it purely a matter of ammunition size (with proportion to how large the gun is)? Is it because six can be divided up well (12 hands on a clock)? Does it have anything to do with the bullet weight and how the cylinder rotates? I figure having an odd multiple of two (as in "two times an odd number," not "a multiple of two which is odd") means you'll never have a round hanging completely out to the left or right, which should be a good thing since being farther away from the drum on the X axis would give it more mechanical advantage and thus make it have an easier time rotating the cylinder when you don't want it to do so. Though there are eight-shot (even multiple of two) revolvers, so I doubt that really makes a difference, but I figure I might as well ask.

Any .41 Mag enthusiasts here?
What do you like about it?
What do you shoot it out of?
What's it good for?
>>
>>34524517
It's literally just a matter of keeping the cylinder to a reasonable size, nothing else. Hence why compact revolvers are often five shots, and only giant ones are up to eight shots in standard calibers.

Got my first revolver, a S&W 686 on monday. The grip is the wrong cut and it's got scuffs here and there, but I can't help but love it as it feels like sex to shoot. I've got a gunsmith who says he can take the hillary hole out for $15. It cost me $645. How'd I do?
>>
>>34525018
Go on youtube and find a video. If you have thumbs and the proper screwdrivers you can take out that lock yourself.
>>
>>34525018
Decent. I've seen them cheaper and I've seen them for more money. Unfortunately the lock guns won't have the same collectability down the road that the pre-lock guns do.
>>
>>34525025
Link to proper screwdriver?
>>
>>34525018
Ya done good. I sold my last 686 (with a grip that fit) for 650.

I'm op. I redeemed myself today. Plus I have a mr73

You just need screwdrivers that are the right size so you don't mar the screws like a junk monkey. If you have a set of bits and a driver you probably have what you need. If you want to get fancy while you're in there get a bottle of metal polish(like fitz) and some q-tips/cut up cotton t-shirt etc and polish the inside of the frame the sides of the hammer basically anywhere that parts move against each other. You're not removing metal only polishing. Clean it, lube it and put it back together. That gun will be slicker than owl shit.

I want one to be diffrent. But I can get a 44 mag for the same price or cheaper. The most important part is the components, which are cheaper. At that point you can just download it to what ever level. Not to be edgey but its kinda the 40 s&w of revolvers. But that that is just my opinion, if it works for you...thats fine.
>>
>>34525407
>s the components, which are cheaper.
For the 44 mag that is.
>>
>>34525407
>it's kinda the 40 S&W of revolvers
That's not edgy, that's pretty good comparison.

The problem with .41 mag is that unless you hand load, it's just an expensive caliber to shoot. Less common than .44, so you have less ammo options generally.
>>
>>34525407
>its kinda the 40 s&w of revolvers
The original plan for the cartridge involved a "police load" of a 200gr semi-wadcutter at 900 fps, functionally equivalent to the 180gr @ 1000 fps 10mm FBI load that lead to .40 S&W's creation.
.40-.41 caliber/180-200 gr/900-1000 fps is basically the handgun equivalent of the as-yet hypothetical 6.5-7mm intermediate caliber that military rifle designers have been dancing around for over a century.
>>
Does anyone know how lil'gun gets such low psi? Its seems way too low for the power you get. Is there any draw back? Using h110 now btw.
>>
Thinking about buying my first revolver. I know it's gonna be a GP100, my only question is do I buy the 6 inch or 4 inch? Thoughts?
>>
>>34526022
What do you want to do with it? If you think you may want to put it on your hip occasionally, go with the 4 inch. If it's just going to be a range gun, go with the 6 inch.

I got a Charter Arms Target Bulldog for $100 today. LGS sold it as-is because you couldn't push the button to eject the cylinder.

Turns out the latch assembly was installed incorrectly. Spent 20 minutes cleaning a little bit of rust and reassembling the latch and have myself a decent condition Target Bulldog in .357 Magnum for $100. Late 70's model too.
>>
>>34526178
Awesome snag bud! Charter are neat little pieces. Post a pic
>>
>>34526022
Get the 4"; a 6" barrel on medium-frame guns like an L-frame or GP100 tends to be obnoxiously front-heavy, especially with a full underlug.

The Model 13 was the .357 magnum version first made for the NYSP and later adopted by the FBI.

Fucking shit anons I need counseling. Been looking for a pre-lock 4" .357 for a while now. Something that hits that sweet spot between price and condition as I'm looking for a shooter and not some collector's piece I feel like I have to baby. Dilemma is I ran across a really nice, well-maintained Model 28 today at a LGS for a sweet fucking price.

BUT IT'S GOT A 6" BARREL!

I am fucking conflicted.
>>
>>34526518
What's the price? 28s are sweet ass guns.
>>
>>34526547
$445 OTD. I'm fucking sweating. The price is fantastic, but I really dig the aesthetic of the 4" guns. Also I'd never be able to CCW a 6" gun. Not like I would CCW an N-frame often but it might be fun to larp in the winter.

Fuck it's really nice though. Hence confliction in my soul.
>>
>>34526224
>>34526138
Counter argument. I own a 6 inch gp and have no problems. I only really carry it for 2ish hours on my hip when I go shooting. And I forget its there sometimes. If you are spoiled with a polymer wonder then your milage my be diffrent. But the increased sight radius and velocity form handloads is worth it to me. Though full disclosure I have really never held a 4 inch revolver for long other than my vaqero.
>>
>>34526518
6" N-frame is best N-frame.

I leave the top rail off though. It can get in the way of the iron sights when shooting it fast.

What does anyone think of red dots sights? The only optics I've used was high powered scopes and thanks not what I want.
>>
>>34526607
>it might be fun to larp in the winter.
Just wear a longer coat.
>>
>>34526607
Not a ccw holder, but I hear that the hardest part of a gun to hide is the grip. So 2" of barrel is not really a big deal. I also imagine your quick draw times wound't suffer much. Also more of the gun powder would burn in the barrel. Thus reducing the flash and noise if ever needed in a self defense situation.
>>
>>34526675
You can do it with 30 minutes of free time and a screwdriver. There is also a kit that gives you a plate to cover the hole
>>
>>34526700
>So 2" of barrel is not really a big deal.
It is when IWB isn't a practical option due to the huge cylinder.
>>
>>34526717
How does a huge cylinder relate to a longer barrel? If it helps apprently due to the cylinder being an irrugular shape it is easier to mask.

I know what you're asking yourself. Did he fire 6 shots or only 5? Well seeing as this is a .357 magnum the like 5th or 6th most powerful handgun in the world and would blow right through your head at 1700fps you have to ask yourself do I feel lucky? Well do you anon?

A "packer" is a dildo that mentally ill women who LARP as men stick in their underwear to create the appearance of a (flaccid, typically) penis in their trousers.

Classic cars can be rebuilt sure, So can guns until they've fallen into a ship of theseus scenario. You can spend all day hunting down original parts for either or you can go new. Either way it'll never be the exact same and either way they weren't mean to serve as art pieces.

Collectors have their place in preserving Americana and being references for sure but trailer/safe queens are just....wrong
