I've seen claims this somehow has better armour than a T-90, although might be because of the ERA
>>34518230
t-90s are made to take a hefty beating over their frontal arc....
>>34513143
>>34518258
which is why I say the tank might have better "armour" in the sense of superior ERA
T-90 would surrvive multiple rounds

The reason for that claim being that the front of the turret and hull has composite then NERA then ERA.
>>34513143
Coolest, M22 Locust, to be honest. It's a damn shame it wasn't introduced half a decade sooner and was obsolete the second it rolled off the factory floor.
>>34519836
No, it's not a tank because it's not classified as a tank, just like the M6 fargo is a tank destroyer and the Strv 103 is an MBT.
M24
Maybe BMP-2 if you count it as a light tank.
>>34518192
Sprut gets me so fucking hard every time I see it.
As if the BMDs weren't scary enough, they decide to put a fucking 125mm gun on one too.
But I still prefer the BMD-4, that thing is dakka af with its 100mm gun + 30mm autocannon arrangement.
>>34519833
The paper thin armor doesn't really matter, as airborne units are dropped behind the frontlines where there is practically no heavy armor.
In the land of no tanks, the man with the light tank is king.
>>34519983
>In the land of no tanks, the man with the light tank is king.
>back of the line units like Pioneers
>Pioneers still have armored recovery vehicles based on the chassis of MBTs like Büffel
>yfw Pioneer crews end up going tank-jousting at 80kmh offroad with the crane arm to impale light tanks
It was just too sexy
>>34514428
My granddad worked on the engine for that series. They asked his team to build a relatively tiny engine that could propel a light tank at speed without overheating. His team said it wasn't possible unless the tank was two tonnes lighter, and supposedly that's how the Scorpion ended up with aluminium armour.
I might ask him for some details about it sometime, it's a much more interesting story if I can give specifics like he can.
>>34513143

the recruiting area (most southeast in pink) is known for its intense zealousy, long military lineages, lack of ethnics, and all round basedness. Most recently they picked up a ketamine habit.

>>34530182
i'm guessing that tank has a norwegian crew, am i right?
Are light tanks still viable in 2017 and beyond?
Or are they just death traps waiting to get blown up by IEDs and AT weapons?
Especially in a swamp, jungle, dense forest and mountainous terrain where 60t+ behemoths would instantly get rekt by mud.
>>34530278
Probably depends who shoots first, though I guess it's hard for infantrymen to carry a machine cannon.
>>34530272
Your guess is wrong.
>>34530278
The role of the light tank has been taken over by the IFV. An IFV is an over-inflated light tank with the ability to carry a couple of dudes under armor protection from artillery shrapnel. Since light tanks typically used to work together closely with infantry anyway just in order to survive with its pathetic armor, this is a natural synergy. The tank needs the infantry to act as extra eyes and ears to spot enemies so it can protect itself; in turn, the light tank offers heavy(er) firepower and a mobile semi-effective bunker as well as massively increased overland speed.
>>34530302
>>34530292
It is telling that the Marder IFV and the Wiesel LT carry the exact same main armaments.

>It is telling that the Marder IFV and the Wiesel LT carry the exact same main armaments.
Well, I guess in Afghanistan it was sufficient for the Taliban...

Nope, i was kinda busy at the time to be dicking around with a camera, and this was before go pros got really big.
Still regret not hopping on that bandwagon sooner. They literally make mounts that fit into a rhino baseplate.
But yeah, the german prt said they were sending a qrf to our tic, and up rolled 4 fuchs and a wiesel. We laughed, the germans sneered, the offending qalat wall got pulverized. Good day.
>>34530371
I heard that German troops got so bored and desperate waiting for actual missions that they ended up trading beer pallets for other troops assignments, is that true?
>>34530363
>>34530385
I could believe that they were bored, but it's not like u.s. platoons could sell the idea to higher. Didn't happen in my experience.
>"hey lt, your conop said you would be out at your COP for a week. Why are you here"
>"well CO, them nice german fellas wanted to get their dicks wet, and even threw in a pallet of beer to cover fuel and ammo."
>>34530409
Nigger it's midday over here in Germany, you could have just asked for me to translate.
>Rede nie wieder mit mir oder meinem Sohn.
>>34530305
An IFV is always going to be fundamentally less efficient than a light tank at the same role, having a larger profile and weaker main weapon, making light tanks great IFV killers, or alternatively, the heavy-weapons vehicle to the IFV's generalist. That, and you can field more light tanks for the equivalent cost of an IFV: three Wiesels versus one Bradley, and I'm placing my bets on the Wiesel.
>>34530305
I would put the caveat that some IFV families include a non infantry carrying variant, like the M2 & M3 Bradley, or more recently the turreted (Ajax) and non turreted (PMRS Ares) versions of the Scout SV.
>>34530441
>Marder and Wiesel have the exact same main weaponry
>Marder has armor and can shrug off 20mm fire from the front
>Wiesel can't, gets perforated
>Marder also has wire-guided missles, Wiesel only has in a special config
>Bradley has a 25mm cannon instead of either's 20mm, also has wire-guided missiles
>both IFVs carry infantry with rocket launchers
You're a) stupid and b) oversimplifying. The only purpose the Wiesel exists for is getting airdropped. That's it.
>>34530419
It's midday here too, guess it's the last time i'm putting my trust in google translate.
thx btw.
I'd like to state that the /k/ reaction to the Wiesel of "OH GOD HOW CUTE" is absolutely normal
Here is an article fron Die Zeit from 1990 as it came out
http://www.zeit.de/1990/33/drei-tonnen-zum-knuddeln
>Wiesel: Three Tons For Cuddling
Assorted quotations
>Although many things have been going badly for the troops, they still occasionally manage to sneak into our hearts
>The Wiesel is a dwarf tank. Krupp: "The possibilities of high mobility deployment were demonstrated admirably over the course of the introduction excercise". Oh yes.
>Which observer of the Tagesschau was not moved as he watched the adorable tracked pet jump through hoops for the crowd - how it turned on the spot at full speed and was picked up; no: "air transported" by its big friend, the helicopter? The next day even the most hardboiled of journalists whispered among each other: Did you see that thing? A baby panzer!
>A public relations officer finally broke all of our inhibitions by assuring us that it most certainly was not a "air drop tank" or "mini-panzer", as the newspapers were writing, but is merely an "armored weapons carrier" and not actually a weapon in and of itself, no new one anyway, since it is only intended to replace the old Kraka which the Fallschirmjägers used to go to fight with in the past; unprotected against wind and weather (read: hail of bullets).
Does anyone know of any good and detailed resources to learn about different engineering aspects of tanks? Suspension, powertrain, subsystems, dynamic aspects etc.
>>34523468
Because nobody in 100 years ever mentioned this tank, it's all because of these damn video games!
How can you be such a retard?
>>34530971
Mostly depends what period you're looking for.
I have quite a lot of sources regarding WWII-era stuff, including archives and transcripts, but aside from that, not much.
>>34531014
Yea WW2 is mainly what i'm interested in from a mechanical point of view. German (tiger, panther) and American (Sherman) in particular.
>>34530971
I too would like to find out more stuff like this, mainly the stuff involving the actual drivetrains of different tanks, and also their gun laying/aiming systems.
I've yet to find something that comprehensively explains how tank steering systems work, aside from the basic as fuck clutch brake systems.
>>34531030
Then I might have some stuff for you, a website called tankarchives.blogpost.com
This website is mainly focused on soviet tanks, but you will find quite a lot of info on german and allied stuff as well, especially american and british thanks to the Lend-Lease.
I'm also looking for a report the brits did of the german heavies, but can't find it. I'll come back to you if I finally do.
>>34531063
cheers anon i'll check it out.
Also for other anons who might be interested, so far I've found http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ and http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor, but they're really more about the history of development rather than the engineering behind it.
>>34514481
Comrades, here's a reliable, simple and cheap tank designed to break through trenches, barbed wire, and traverse swamps of our glorious country. Use only in support of the infantry. (Do not go faster then 30 on rough terrain, 300hp is for getting you out of mud, not street racing)
>Be Fedor, tank commander
>Receive a suicidal order to break through enemy lines.
>Despite all the efforts, the optics refuse to give you a sight picture, ride into battle with all the hatches open like a true hero.
>Get lucky enough not to get shot by pak 36, 40, etc. on the way there
>Ivan the driver rockets the gas
>goes 50km/h
>Destroys the enemy morale, by drive wheels, control shafts, bolts flying out of suspension. (Tracks were torn off and flung into the opposition)
>Tank compartment is filled with unventilated smoke, bullet and shell cases, oil smeared on the floor, and Fedor's brains as he didn't close the hatch, even though you were shouting orders.
>Time to report the success!
>Or not, as for the whole tank battalion the radio was issued only to the recon and commanding crews.
>Alright, we'll act as a dot, small arms surely can't hurt us!
>7.92x94mm to the turret kills Alexey, the loader
>Turret ring is fine, but the turn handle got lost somewhere
>Also the engine ignites.
>Yet no shots follow, really how could a burning tank with open hatches can have a crew in it?
>Through the power of Communism, kill the unsuspecting Germans with your handgun.
>Finally Soviet infantry overtakes the battle
>Cooked but alive, report.
>Get a medal for leading an assault and then court martialed for shooting and squishing the advancing infantry.
Just an average battle of bt-5 commander.
