>Stop.
>Look.

>Smell.

It's pretty basic bitch seeming advice, but a lot of warfare stuff is extremely basic in theory, you just have to git gud at application. The important thing is to have patience and to, yourself, be well camouflaged. If you just sit and keep sharp you have a much better chance of spotting unnatural movement compared to the environment.

Or you just go lolcheatmode and use thermals, which is going to spot anybody who isn't specifically concealing themselves from thermals.
>>
>>34502838
You either had to do this, knew someone competent, or just read some damn good books but spot on for all counts
>>
>>34502838
when is the military going to star issuing ghillie suits with those emergency blankets under them?

emergency blankets pretty good at evading thermals

>>
>>34503393
Did it, but this is basic tier training and it's the first thing listed in any base military skillbook.

>>34503407
Those blankets work if your body isn't actually touching them like using them as a shade cover. Touching them, they heat up very quickly. You need stand-off between the person and the space blanket for it to really work, and the whole thing becomes a big bulky production. There are some high end military suits, but they are expensive. A DIY with commercial stuff is feasible maybe for static or extreeeemely short term niche use to move around, but for any kind of widespread application it's nonners.
>>
>>34502789
Be a well concealed target so you know what to look for
>>
>>34503483
Oh I know but understanding how simple it is and applying it is intermediate pushing advanced

what's the philosophy behind this?

>>
Why are both the sniper and spotter creddited for the kill? In everything ive ever seen or read the spotter acts as if they both pulled the trigger. Not mocking them just genuinley curious.
>>
>>34504066
Humans are creatures of habit, our brains are wired to find patterns and stick to them. One of the earliest habits we learn is everything is left to right because that's how books, writing, driving etc. fucking everything is left to right. It's like a comfort, you're just settling in and following a routine when you look left to right. So when you go against one of the most basic patterns that your brain finds comfort in, you can pick out almost everything because you're not longer just passing something over looking for big glaring details and instead your brain is now soaking in everything it can because it has no pattern to follow.

I can't tell you how many socks I've found by just looking right to left.

>go to wooded area or something similar
>bring a bunch of small items
>magazines, protractor, blank firing adapter, grenade pouch, toy rifle etc
>have friend hide these around the area
>obviously don't watch him
>lay on the ground and quickly sketch location
>you now have 10-15 minutes of searching with binos or spotting scope
>if you see an object, mark location on paper as well as size, shape, color, etc
>after time is up, friend will show you where everything is
>see how many you found
>>
Hunt small game.

You start to see shapes and colors that don't belong.

You also learn to look more than you move. Stopping increases your visual concentration because your brain doesn't have to multitask with walking.

Also do some of these exercises spotting the missing or hidden items.

additionally, at night don't look AT things, look BESIDE them. your eye has something like 120 million photo-receptors that can be activated by a single photon (but can not see colour), and 6 million photo-receptors that can be activated by being hit with ~5 photons (that can see colour).

if it's so dark that you can't see colour, you can use your rods to pick out dark things easily. try it next time you're outside at night, look at a star directly, then look to the side of it. it will become "brighter" when you look to the side of it.

finaly someone understands basic physics
a normal tarp will also do the job as long as it doesent touch something hot

This, and always keep your dominant eye closed at night if there is a sudden light source. That way it always adjusts back to the darkness quicker.
>>
>>34503483
Just line the exterior of a jacket with it and spray paint dust it in FDE or OD to eliminate glare. The thickness of the jacket should theoretically keep most of the heat from the covering.

If it's hot out ur fukd kid
>>
>>34504864
that doesn't work, both your eyes dilate or contract at the same time to the diameter of whichever one is getting the most light

Oh it's in fact the opposite

the hotter it gets, the harder it gets for thermals to spot you
Especially if they're in a big distance (snipers behind thermals) or a biiiiig distance (UAV)

man, now I'm really glad modern OD comes in so many shades and a lot of my carriers and strapping mix shades across each item, that monolithic blot of his gear pings real easy in partial sunlight and almost anywhere he's not 95% behind bush leaves and trees

partially untrue, keeping one eye closed eases your jerk reaction and allows a better tolerance of both sudden and constant glare

someone once told me it's not that your eyes adjust faster, but the covered one wants to snap onto whatever light level its first exposed to and takes the other one along for the ride
>>
>>34502838
thermals are a meme, poeple aren ot much hotter than the stuff around them in the brush. in a room a guy will glow like the fucking sun but in the forest everything is alive and warm, and the guy is probably behind that stuff anyway.
>>
>>34504945
That is not true, you can prove it to yourself by closing your eye for a matter of minutes.
>>
>>34505127
I used a few, including the SKEETIR mounted on a rifle, and they are quite good. Obviously at high noon they aren't great, but at night, evening, and morning they work. In a 24 hour environment, there are more hours where they work than when they don't.
>>
>>34504945
Both eyes dilate at the same time, but sensitivity to light is another aspect. Even the mythbusters proved that keeping one eye covered improves night vision when they did a pirate theme episode.

For general situation awareness, ARMA 3 Exile on Tanoa is bretty good if you don't wanna go outdoors.

Nearly everyone has a ghillie suit and the jungles are dense as fuck, and you have to keep on high alert or you'll wind up shot in the back from a sniper hiding 800m away.

You still see dirt and dust linger near the shooter. Doesn't take long to figure out where the prick is and laying into em
>>
>>34505554
I think that might be because of how photoreceptors signal nerves by releasing chemical packets that fatigue, same way when you look at a light source for too long and it leaves that off-color spot on your vision for a minute or so. I'd assume keeping your eye closed more or less allows the eye to fully charge those chemical reservoirs, leaving you with an eye able to rapidly deliver information as the eye is opened regardless of dilation.

Lots of porn.

You will get good at recognizing human figures.

For maximum effectiveness you will need to watch twink porn to train your eyes to recognize male figures. Not much women on the battlefield.

Because in a normal sniper team the shooter is just the "monkey behind the gun". He follows the instructions of the spotter, and the wind/distance etc estimation done by the spotter andadjustments/hold he gives determine whether you hit or not. I can not stress enough how important the spotter is. It isnt like in video games.
>>
>>34513490
in a USMC scout sniper documentary it says in the end the sniper decides adjustments
>>
>>34513561

Take that with a grain of salt. Every team does things a bit differently. When i was spotting at school my partner would make the final decision on adjustments because he was better at wind calls than me, but you bet your ass if i give adjustments to a new, non-school trained guy he'd better fucking do what i say. His trust in the more experienced member of the team (esp these days since he has the range finder and ballistic computer) is essential to the relationship and essential to making follow-on adjustments.
