Anyone have a third gen Smith or experience with them around here? Rarely see them in family photos and I am hunting one. (5906)

Also big heavy steel autoloaders thread. Channel the 80s/90s!

Had a 3913. Loved the hell out of that thing.
>>
>>34500252
Did you sell it or was it issued? What did you think of the alloy frame? I figured the stainless would age better plus I don't plan to carry it so stainless seems to be the best option for me.
>>

>Anyone have a third gen Smith or experience with them around here?

I've been told I'm the "Go to guy".

What would you like to know?

>5906

Alright, firstly if you do grab one make sure it's one with the rounded trigger guard. Easier to find holsters.

Secondly, be sure it's the 2nd gen(The one with the black hammer) as there was an issue with the 1st gen where if dropped on the butt of the gun the mainspring will fail.

Target sights(Like the one pictured) will run more.

Mecgar still makes mags for them, so there's that.

>>34500252
Had one of these too. Sold it cause I didn't shoot it. Very nice gun.
>>
>>34500271
Alloy frame is lighter, but the gun in general is smaller.

I still have a 4006 and a 5903TSW. I can say by far the xx03 model over the xx06 models are far easier to maneuver due to the weight.

Recoil is non-existant on either gun, it's fucking 9mm.
>>
>>34500272
Would you completely shy away from the pre mim guns then? Because I found what looks like a pretty screaming deal on a 5906 with the adj sights but it has the old hammer/controls
>>
>>34500293
Oh of course not. Just be careful about dropping it on the butt of the gun.

Is it rounded or flat trigger guard?
>>
>>34500271
I sold it. I made the mistake of bringing my tiny mother shooting with me once. She ended up loving it. I sold it to her and got a newer smith for myself. I regret selling it, but hey, when your parents get to the age mine are at you do anything to make them happy. She got my father one too.
No issues with alloy frame, it was light enough to make it easy to carry and hold, but still weighty enough that recoil wasn't a problem.
Those guns are of a quality that they really don't make anymore.
>>
>>34500372
Rounded. Checks every box you recommended except for the mim stuff.

One mag, no box but clean, not a banged up popo gun. Sub 400 a good deal?
>>
>>34500407
At least you may have the opportunity to buy it back from them someday. I always gave my firearm gifts to family with that caviat. "it's yours as a gift, but if you ever decide to sell, give me the first crack at it"

I am sure your folks are enjoying it anon. And they think of you any time they see it.
>>
>>34500410
Is it a gunstore, pawnshop, or private sale?

Also are you in Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Mass, or California?
>>
>>34500426
Online. 22 bucks to ship it, 20 bucks at my ffl. I'd max out at 420ish or so after everything.

4506 owner here, squared trigger guard edition. Definitely best shooting 45 I have, even better than 1911s (though I don't have a high end one) and USP. Raven concealment holster works nicely, even with squared trigger guard.

Checks out. I'll probably snag one one of those someday too but I got out of the 45 game so I am going to start with a common caliber.
>>
>>34500437

You've given me enough information to find the gun you're looking at.

And yes, that is worth it. Buy it. But I would change those grips out to the standard 59 series grips.

Those guns are HEAVY

I've always wanted a 4566, but fuck me I am not paying those prices.

Its the heaviness that makes them such light shooters. What money? Used 3rd gens are like less than $500.
>>
>>34500466
Of course I fuckin did. I was trying to not do that lol.

Is it a good enough deal at full price to not bother bidding it?

Full price I wouldn't bother with it unless you want a 59 series gun and nothing else will do.

Also, take a look at 5903s.
>>
My dad has a 469 I hunted down for him since it is basically a compact version of his old duty pistol. Very good OG auto. I carried it for a bit it is quite nice. Way clunkier than my Bodyguard but handles better.
>>
>>34500461
But wait, there's more.

Here's one at 365, but it's already got 10 bids and 13 days left

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/661498388

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/666661416

And don't even get me started on the 1006. You can't find one below 600.
>>
>>34500522
Yeah I knew the 10mm were commanding insane prices these days. Still cheaper than a Delta elite that will just shake itself apart.
>>
>>34500507
Alright imma toss a healthy bid at it and cross my fingers

Hopefully none of these faggots bid me up or snake it.

Thanks for the help ssb.

I have shied from the alloy guns bc their finish seems to go to shit and apparently is pretty tough to have it fixed. Stainless lasts forever and is easy to buff out. Thoughts?

I got my 4506 in 2011 for $450 on Gunbroker. I'm sorry those meanies are keeping you from your dreams Anon.
>>
>>34500529
Yeah, but if I really wanted a single stac 10mm, I'd just buy the RIA 10mm and call it a day.

>>34500549
>I have shied from the alloy guns bc their finish seems to go to shit and apparently is pretty tough to have it fixed.
Yeah, the finish does start to oxidize, but hell, the gun still works.

Honestly I wouldn't buy a Stainless gun. They're too heavy for my taste.

>>34500563
It's cool man. I've owned the gammut of S&W metal frames. I just got bored of them. I'll probably always keep my 5903TSW(It was my first handgun) and my 4006(Who the fuck wants that gun), but the rest have been traded up for more than what I paid for.

ALso, I've come to realize I don't like Double action .45s, with the exception of the 4566(Dat short barrel)

1911s for me only, baby.
>>
I had a 5906 and I liked it more than my USP and CZ. Best 9mm I have ever owned. I sold it because I liked my PX4 45 better.

They are super neat but specialized. 38 was cutters only. But I am a huge 38/357 fan and I could see it being a blast for target shooting.
>>
>>34500549
Update: someone bought it out from under me.

The search continues!
>>
I had a 4006 years ago and sold it when times were tough. I regret it to this day.

I just picked these up this past week end. 39-2 were 277 and 325. 4006 Performance Center was 600.

I could have bought a 1066 at 600 as well, but I missed out on that.
>>
the 5906 was the first handgun I ever shot. I felt I did okay with it. Not great, but okay. Oddly enough, I can't shoot handguns for shit now.
>>
I like them
>>
https://gun.deals/product/smith-wesson-chp-4006tsw-40-sw-20-down-house-financing-no-credit-checks-399

is it weird that i really want one of these as an above average but still quintessentially 90s blaster? That price is so cheap too.
>>
I carry a 5946 at work.

DAO trigger that's miles long, but it's smooth and crisp. I'm told it's substantially better than the DA pull on the DA/SA models. Shoots fine for what it is.
I've broken two extractors over the years. Not my first or second choice in gun, but I shoot well enough with it to score 100s on the (laughably easy) qualifications, and it kept on functioning through a 100-round qualification cycle even with a half-chipped extractor.
Other time I broke it was also during a qual, it was down for the count then. I inspect it after every time I go shooting now.

>>34500272
The recall concerned only the grip, which was found to be too brittle, which if broken in the right place would cause the mainspring to lose tension.
S&W recalled and replaced those old grips, and if you have one that slipped through the cracks, they'll still send you a new grip, solving the potential problem completely.
For the "Go to guy" your info is pretty bad, tripfag. Go check for yourself.

>RECALL: Smith & Wesson has shipped over 300,000 Third generation Pistols. We have had a very small number or reports where a dropped pistol resulted in a broken grip resulting in a failure to fire by releasing mainspring tension. Resultant testing and review have shown that a pistol dropped at a specific angle can cause a fracture of the grip.

>As a result of these occurrences and our testing, we have made a change in the grip material to a thermoplastic alloy of increased durability. This new material, which is now being used on all current production models, can be identified by a dimple on the bottom of the grip, next to the large opening. Additionally, the blue product box has a green dot sticker on the label end.

3rd Gen best gen, I daily a 6946 and grew up 59 series guns. I really like the alloy framed models as I feel they are the perfect happy medium weight wise between an all steel pistol and a polymer one.
