My only real problem with making Roland black is that he and Susannah have a pretty big thing going, so there is a way to make it right and if they do it I'll congratulate them on their balls of steel. This is not speculation, the inspiration for the series is literally from "The Song of Roland", an early medieval French epic (somewhat ironically about fighting the muslims in Spain). Roland's fictional country of Gilead is also stylistically heavily based on medieval France and England (themes imply a relation to King Arthur) using similar customs and mannerisms.
