I'll look into OC spray. Can't do the handgun. I commute to and from work every week and TSA does random inspections of known crewmembers. Checking luggage isn't really an option when you're jumpseating.

And is there any truth to it being easier to get a low-hour jobs in Southeast Asia? First, you're lucky. When I was flying for [unnamed regional airline] out of STL, my crashpad was literally in Ferguson. This was pre-riot, and it wasn't as bad back then, but one of our captains actually got jumped by a couple of guys coming back late one night; unfortunately for the local diversity, he'd been an amateur boxer and actually knew how to fight, so it didn't go well for them. Oh, and I did most of my ratings at Comair Academy back in the day, so I got to live in Sanford, too. It seems I can't stop flying out of chimpout hotspots.

Now, I've never seen anybody get caught up going through TSA as an FFDO - they just let you through. If you're commuting in uniform, I fail to see how this will be a problem. I also fail to see how taking your FFDO gun to your crashpad will be a problem. As long as you're just going to/from the airport with it, why would there be an issue? How do they expect you to get it to work - teleport it there? Sure, you don't want to take it out of the crashpad and be carrying it around on the streets, but if you're on reserve, how much will you really be doing that anyway? Other than fast food runs, most people just sit around playing Xbox anyway.

Anyhow, if you really want something to carry on your burger runs, a quirk in California weapons laws is that folding knives of any type and size are legal to carry concealed. Buy a nice one at home, mail it to the crashpad, and just keep it there; put it in a drawer when you're flying or home. That's probably the most realistic solution.

Meh. There were better regionals and worse ones. I actually liked the J-41 - they fixed all the J-32's stability issues (fortunately I never had to fly that POS) and it was a fun plane to fly. Not a lot of fun in the summetime with no a/c though, so I was happy to get onto the jungle jet where I could run the APU. And yes, I've moved on to bigger and better things since then.
