I stand corrected on the velocity, but not on the price. Velocity difference is 400 fps, but go to any store and all comparable loaded 150 or 180 grain loads are priced the same. Even .243 and .270 is priced the same as well. Basic lead hunting ammo is $20 a box +/- a dollar a box.

Nah. Just get the 308, handloader or not. Just quickly comparing hodgdon's data, their max loads are within 100fps of each other using the same bullets, going from 308 to 30-06. The 06 just wastes more powder to get the same speed.

Another huge benefit of the 308 is not requiring the long action of the 06.

If you're buying an original M1, get a 30-06, otherwise it is always the worst of the two. Hell, even my CMP M1 is 308.

This makes no sense. They can shoot the same bullets to nearly identical velocities.

The 308 just lets you do it in a smaller, lighter, more hunt-friendly sized package. (and save some powder in the process, if you're reloading)
