The really disgusting thing is that although the Koreans made every effort to minimize fatalities (body count of dead looters shot by Koreans was in the single digits IIRC, which given the situation shows amazing restraint), the police made virtually no effort to detain the looters/arsonists and went straight for the Koreans defensing their businesses (IE doing the job that the cops who NOPED on day one and didn't return for 48 hours SHOULD have been doing) and arrested them.

As additional spit in the eye, not only did insurance companies refuse to reimburse virtually any of the businesses that were destroyed (because Arson doesn't count) but the city government conveniently never allowed any of the destroyed businesses permits to reopen. So not only were the Koreans victimized by the riots and their livelihoods taken away, but their opportunity to rebuild was also denied. In effect, the city government took sides in all this. Perhaps they were hoping to placate the African American community in order to prevent further riots, but it's a massive injustice that they have never admitted to or apologized for.

That situation was really fucked and highlighted issues with the LA Times/other news media and how they had dick for integrity.

The girl that was shot punched the Korean woman's ticket before being shot in the back. That's a really shit situation all round which is not supported as self defense by CA's laws. Yeah punching people in the face is illegal, but at the time she was running away she posed no threat to anyone, so it was pretty clearcut voluntary manslaughter. The cashier got like 2 months and really, she should have gotten a few years. The judge fucked up pretty bad, since it seemed to indicate to black people that their lives weren't considered valuable by the justice system, which was later seemingly reaffirmed by the Rodney King case.

Where journalism fucked the pooch was in covering that story. Instead of showing the girl punching the woman they focused on how the evil clerk shot her in the back. Both were true elements of the case, but failing to report the first part does change the situation drastically. Most people, especially black people thought the clerk shot the girl in the back out of pure spite or over some sort of imagined insult. They didn't even know that she had been punched.

At the same time they were consistently reporting on growing ethnic tensions between Koreans and Blacks, when in reality the opposite was happening. The Korean communty was working very hard to reach out. This was selectively un-reported. Instead they published inflammatory articles, like how Koreans would refuse to look black people in the face because they considered them "ugly" or "untouchable", whereas in fact this was common practice in Asia, where staring at a customer was considered rude.

In effect, the news media at the time, particularly the LA Times took every effort to blow out and sensationalize every aspect of what was really a non-story until it gradually became one with no care of what would happen and who could get hurt in the process.
