Browning BLR 300 win mag while prone. It was partly my fault for how I held it; right on top of my shoulder. Bruised my collar bone a bit.

Shot the same gun a few years later and had no issues. Now I have a Rem 700 300 win and enjoy it quite a bit.

Both barrels went off, 3 inch shells in each chamber. Front hand was fine, trigger hand was cut up and skin was torn a bit. Now I have a lump in the bone on my middle finger. Worth it.

Bohica 50 bmg upper on a bog standard ar lower. No weight, no recoil mitigation. 2 shooters in front me walked away bleeding.

Whenever anyone has something other than the rather mild calibres I normally shoot and offers to let me try, I'll shoot seated on a stump or styrofoam slab to take the recoil better.
That said, the worst I've shot was a .458 Lott, which wasn't all that bad. To be sure, nothing I'd like to shoot for much more than a couple of shots.

Agree the biggest recoil there is in the common gun market is from those 3.5 inch heavy load candlesticks. They are very powerful. No problem shooting them with a good tight hold but the next day my shoulder was blue. Have shot loads of 50s and large bores and super magnum shotgun candlesticks have a wallop greater than nearly anything else.

About the limit of what I can actually shoot offhand but can be good for your shoulder.

Probably a 3 1/2 inch shell, forget what it was loaded with. I'm not really one to seek massive recoil though.

Barrett M99 shooting (what in retrospect were probably dangerously hot) handloads. Didn't help that I was a skinny 12-year-old at the time.
After you get used to that, most guns' recoil kinds stop bothering you.

My Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull. This webm I made was the first time I shot it. I had to do it one handed because of camera. I figured "I've shot a .44 mag before how could this be any worse". This thing kicks so hard it actually shakes your arm meat and I think its whiplash. I woke up the next day "I wonder why my arm is sor.... oh, yeah..."

Somehow missed your post anon, Im quite aware of the energy difference between a 50 and a 300. I believe that a light weight single shot 50bmg is going to have enough recoil not to want to shoot it ever.

As far as common calibers, any lightweight long action magnum is going to have painful, jarring amounts of recoil without a muzzle break. People don't realize the significance a few pounds an action can have, a kid can shoot an M1 garand all day, but a featherweight 30-06 will bruise a man for example
