The French have an impressive military legacy and all but ruled Europe at one point, their armed forces have been formidable in most of their iterations and now we fault them eternally because in WW2 they thought the Maginot line would work. Yes it was an incredible blunder but not one which makes them cowards, fools yes, cowards just the opposite.

The French had no unsinkable aircraft carrier to shrink back to after Dunkirk, they could only accept the burning of Paris or utter defeat. They chose to fight with their back against the sea so that the Brits could fight another day.

So yeah they lost and after that throttling they were unable to hold on to their empire, It's hardbtobdo that when your economy is in tatters. But today the French military is the only military in Europe to have launched It's own expeditionary war into another country in nearly 6 decades. Give credit where it is do, the French aren't the best but they aren't bad at all, and they've proven themselves more than enough.

The Rafale still sucks tho.

The final evacuations of Britisah and French troops together were on the same fucking day. There never was any "anglo saving heroic last stand by the brave French to let the British get away". Both of them held the line at Dunkirk, then retreated back onto the ships at the same fucking time.

To say what you say is just as bad as claiming there weren't any French at all, it's the opposite extreme.

The only difference was some French elected to stay in France and let whatever happens happen, surrender or not. It wasn't some gallant sacrifice.

The final evacuation wasn't the 3rd of june but the 4th, and it's Churchill who forced the royal navy to go back to save the remaining french soldiers. 26000 evacuated, 35000 prisonners.

On May 26 Lord Gort had received the order to NOT inform the french and belgian generals of the beggining of the evacuation. Which led the the withdrawal of ALL of the british troops south west of Dunkerque, and let 7 french divisions fight alone against the germans. They fought until they had no more ammunition, and were only useful to delay the final german assault. They held the line for 4 days against superior german forces, 1 vs 10 or even 1 vs 30 in some areas.

I remember very well stories that were told to me when I was a kid by first hand witnesses of what happened there, of english soldiers kicking the hands of some french soldiers trying to get onto the british ships and letting the french drown into the sea. Or british officers destroying their canons and heavy weapons on the beach while french officers desperately asked them to borrow them instead to fight against the germans.

There were around 11 000 french KIA in the battle of Dunkerque. The germans lost around 20 000 men. The brits had 3 500 dead total.
Almost all of the 35 000 prisoners were french. three quarters of the combat casualties on the ground were french.
This is the reality. The french under the command of général Fagalde saved the asses of the brits and their own. Undoubtedly.
