Is there something wrong with me if I actually like the MREs that I have eaten? Like, I haven't had one that I disliked. The only thing I didn't like came out of a kazhakstani IRP and it was a compromised can. I enjoyed the Ruski IRP and the lithuanian MRE that I got and really enjoyed the Dutch one.

I tried russian IRP(P) by Spetspit. Judging by the real usefulness the set, it would be better to buy two cans of meat (some people say that Belarus makes great canned beef), take a fork or a spoon, bread and something to heat the food up.

My favorite is, I think, vegetarian lasagna? It's been a long time. Overall they are overpriced and have way too many calories for most normal people. They're not perfect if your shtf solution involves moving around, because they're designed to be used by soldiers with fairly frequent food ressuply, and are thus very heavy.

C-rats got a bad rap too. I had the despised ham and limas in Basic and didn't object to them. Fruit cocktail and date nut bread were pretty good.

You shouldn't really enjoy survival food or you'll overeat out of boredom. That said, many G.I.s will complain about having an orgasm and bitch about everything. They'd fucking complain about oxygen.

Got a couple of boxes from my old ANG unit. They aren't bad. They have better ones, but usually you can find mil issue pretty cheap. You can also fit a shit ton of them into a pack if you break them down first.

As for advice; never eat the omelet; always have water ready when you eat the crackers; the heaters can keep you warm in the cold for a good bit after the "cooking" temps wear off; when in doubt, grab a "pasta" meal; and put some of the insta coffee beans in a drink bag with some sugar and save some toilet paper. When you need a boost, pour some into a wad of toilet paper, wrap in tight, and pop it in between your teeth and lips like a dip. Swish some spit around it and swallow. That kept me up on many night security rotations out in the field.

I have some nearly 30+ year old MREs that have been stored in great condition that I'm willing to try later to see how bad they are. Will post a thread on here if and when I do that.

But for the most part I don't like MREs. They are a pain in the ass to make unless you have a table to lay it all out on. They taste shitty and they rely on you having already pre-purified water anyways.

That's why I carry a saucepan and an old WW2 mess kit when I go hiking. I use just dried survival food. It's usually much better and it doesn't clog you up/make you shit yourself.

Generally a lot of it doesn't last as long as MREs, while some of it can last longer. I have quite a few bins stockpiles for if SHTF... but I also have preserved seeds too... Because I know my food supply won't last for 20 years. So hopefully I can get to growing food and raising animals after the shit has rotted away or stopped getting flung all over by the fan.

I'd take my freeze dried Sausage biscuits and gravy over an Enchilada MRE any day...

I often go on week-long camping excursions with my buddies. Usually it is mostly us getting plastered at night, shooting at cans/bottles, making survival shelters we never really use (because fuck using it until you have to), and practicing survival skills/testing equipment.

I prefer Mountain house freeze dried stuff, I have quite a few bins of it. Next thing I have is alot of dehydrated mashed potatoes, salt and simple spices, and a shit ton of water/tang and ways to purify more water.

It would keep me and maybe 2 other people alive for the better part of a year with rationing. If it was just me rationing it... I could survive for a couple years.

if I can't get to growing/hunting/finding more food in a couple months than either shit is unlivable or I deserve to die.

I don't plan on bugging out. I just plan on staying in and fortifying.

Those were common during Desert Shield.

We had one airman who used the hot chocolate and peanut butter to make expedient peanut butter cups in his steel mess kit pan. Heat layer of chocolate goop until even and thick, add peanut butter, heat until even, then pour pre-heated chocolate on top. Surprisingly acceptable.

You can, and we did, pool the freeze dried fruit, sugar and some yeast from the chow hall to make wine. At one time my tent had seven coolers going at once.
