Its time for a professional.

I tabble with some real gunsmithing from time to time but i wouldnt want to touch that because you can only take away and with wood that old a small mistake could be big.

I would take either to a wood worker or a gunsmith who specializes in gun stocks.

Just bought this gun and noticed it. It would probably be cheaper to replace the buttstock, but its original and matching.

I'll look into the prices though to see if it's even worth it

1. Acquire pic related. Exact brand, exact type.
2. Remove sling swivel from stock
3. Stuff crack with glue until it's completely full and oozing out.
4. Clamp tightly.
5. Wipe away squeezeout with wet paper towel. Dont' forget the screwholes.
6. Let cure overnight.

what kind of rifle is it?

it looks old enough that a new or used stock really woudnt look good on the gun. A fix would give it some character.

don't get ript off that any good woodman will charge you 40-50 dollars tops plus a little for labour so make sure you shop around and send em good hd pics also, make sure you notify your local police you intend on getting the gun stock fixed by a woodsmith so they document it just in case

I dont think you need to inform the police. He is just getting the butt stock fixed. They wont need the action.

I would keep filling it with wood glue till it's flush with the wood around it after it dries. Then get some good paints and experiment to make a color identical as the stock. then paint over just the glue to blend it in.

Also getting a band welded round the end would make sure it stays that way forever and looks good
