What is /k/'s opinion on .17HMR? I got a savage rifle with a bull barrel and scope for a pretty good price, seems fun for plunking/shooting varmints from the porch. Did I goof?

wtf is this niche round supposed to replace, not knocking it, just see it all over the ground at a range i visit
>>
>>34484696
It was designed as a round to replace some now obsolete round for flat plains. They wanted it to go fast, and that it did

>The .17 HMR round is similar to rounds developed by dedicated rimfire wildcatters who worked to create a rimfire cartridge with an exceptionally flat trajectory. These wildcatters were seeking to match the ballistics of the obsolete 5mm Remington Magnum Rimfire, which was made from 1970 to 1974, and was to that point the fastest rimfire cartridge ever produced.

cool

yeah, just read it. wildcatters, floating boats man floating boats.

Does .17HMR do more damage than .223 or are the projectiles about the same size ie damage wise on squirrels and prairie dogs? (asking anyone)
>>
>>34484776
i think the .223 has higher velocity and ft/lb so I guess .223 is higher damage? Not a ballistics expert
>>
I found that while the .17HMR does go faster, it is quite easily affected by wind. I found that any heavy gust blows it all over the place above 100 meters

.223 would turn a squirrel into red mist.

Doesn't even take a heavy gust. A 5mph intermittent or swirling crosswind routinely opens my 100yd groups up from 3/4" to 6" with the 17gr V-max. The 20gr XTP fairs a little better but is generally less accurate to start with so it's kind of a wash.

>>34484776
Depends entirely on which bullet you use. Most .224" bullets as found in the .223rem simply are heavily enough built they will not even start to expand within a squirrel shot broadside since the animal is only 2-3" thick, meaning they cause very little tissue damage. The 15.5gr NTX, 17gr V-max, and 20gr XTP as found in most .17hmr will easily initiate expansion within a squirrel, with the 15.5gr NTX pretty much exploding them and the 20gr XTP leaving holes big enough I can stick my thumb through.

However, there are exceptions. Very light varmint bullets in the .223 like the 32-40gr Varmint Grenade, tipped Varmageddon, and V-max will absolutely explode a squirrel while American Eagle's 20gr FMJ load in the .17hmr will icepick it and leave a very tiny hole. Shots running the length of the body provide enough resistance to expand even bonded softpoints in .223, which are then devastating.

Exactly, The best environment to use the round is in a heavy forested area, where the wind can't penetrate the brush
